Upgrade in Goal vs Upgrade on Defence

Pete M

Recommended Posts

Before the start of season, JB decided to spend $6 M on upgrading the goaltender; eventhough Lack and Markstrom were on the roster and primed to prove themselves.

The decision to spend money on goaltending compromised the need to upgrade the defence.

Most die hard Canuck fans knew that the Achilles heal for the Canucks was the defence.

The question: is Miller a better asset than an upgrade to the Canucks defence...now that the season is a third over...what do you think?

You don't win a cup with 2 rookie goalies in this league. He made the right choice.

Relax, they lost a few games. The sky isn't falling.

Miller was the right choice. There weren't any better dman on the market. Glad we didn't over pay for guys like niskanen orpik etc

How many games did we win after Luongo was traded last year?

I didn't like the Miller signing, but at the same time, wasn't terribly disappointed with it - it's just the term I'm not too comfortable with. I would not have given him three years - not with Lack as close as he is, and the other two young Swedes in the system. I'm a big believer in Eddie Lack, and think Miller's term could be a problem if he doesn't perform well enough to make him remarketable, and I would be extremely disappointed if the Canucks move their talented young guys as a result of Miller.

Personally would have preferred to target more of a mid-range tanden type guy like Greiss, particularly given the fact most people don't consider this team a contender quite yet, but at the same time I see the reasoning quite clearly, and a couple factors imo justify signing a guy like Miller.

First, it can be seen as a sign of respect and commitment to the Sedins to make the team as absolutely competitive as possible immediately. Also, moving Kesler and managing to return Bonino as well as have the cap to sign Vrbata imo meant the team was also set up to be quite competitive right from the get-go. All in all, it was the only move JB made that I would not have, but at the same time, it's hard to argue with it. It also came at no assets cost, so the price is minimal in the end if Miller performs, or if they are able to move him should he find himself challenged to retain the starting role.

As for the blueline aspect, I'd have been in favour of adding an inexpensive veteran, but for the most part agree with the approach JB has taken, which is to add to the prospect pool and see how the development within the franchise proceeds - to this point they haven't yet even leaned on Corrado or other Utica assets, so I don't see the need to be as pressing as some folks around here, and consider the likes of Sbisa and Stanton to be better than they get credit for.

1. We aren't a cup contender, and weren't expected to be.

2. Miller is mediocre to average at best at this stage in his career

3. "There weren't any better dman on the market" We essentially traded Garrison to clear cap for Miller..

I've said this before and Ill say it again .. I think jim and trevor figured that this would be a tough year .. I think they knew they'd be in tough and that miller could at least let them compete night in and out . The plan has worked pretty well so far .

Did they wanna win a cup ? yes , of coarse .. did they expect to even compete seriously ? I dont think so

Im guessing they didn't even think they'd be in this position

We need a goalie that can keep us in the game. Nothing more. It's not worth spending a ton of money on goaltending

We need to build our defense. The 6 guys we put on the back end are crucial. Pedan, Hutton, Corrado, Cederholm, Tryamkin, Subban, McEneny is a good start, hopefully 2-3 of them can make it. We still need to draft more defenseman and trade for one if possible

ON up higher has a fair summary of what I would have said. No sense repeating it.

I only would have targeted a young D, not a vet, with speed and puck skills. As many of us have debated / suggested in other threads. I'm willing to dip into our chest of forward prospects and add picks or tweak depending on who? Pouliot, Clendenning, Severson, Larsson, Gormley & in a different look Reinhart or Pullock were all ''idea's'' suggested this past summer. An ELC defenseman would have had little impact on whether or not we would have been able to acquire Miller.

MEH, he still stood on his head and won us games we did not expect.

Hopefully the blame game does not ramp up on our goalie either.
