White supremacist accused in Phoenix ax murder

Phoenix police arrested a member of a White supremacist gang in the ax murder of last spring and nearly decapitated the victim in the process, according to court documents.

Christopher Paul Mason, 31, told some of the witnesses that he murdered Joshua Calkins, 35, in April because Calkins had robbed Mason's former girlfriend at gunpoint, police said,

Calkins' body was found April 16, wrapped in plastic and dumped in an alley near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road. Police said his hands were tied behind his back and bloody towels and bleach were discarded nearby.

He had trauma to his neck, back and body, police records showed, the nature of which led a medical examiner to speculate Calkins had been killed with an ax.

Interviews conducted in the coming months with more than 20 people would lead investigators to believe that the medical examiner's guess was exactly right.

Witnesses told investigators that Calkins and Mason went to an apartment near 59th Avenue and Camelback Road because Mason wanted to retaliate for the robbery, according to court records.

At least one person was inside the apartment when Mason attacked Calkins with the blunt side of an ax, court documents showed. That witness helped Calkins to safety, but Calkins wanted to go back to the apartment to retrieve his personal belongings.

Police interviewed several other people who said they saw Calkins in the apartment on April 15, some of whom saw him bound and gagged in a manner that matched Calkins' condition when his body was discovered, according to court documents.

"Witness number 8 said Joshua's eyes were saying 'help me' but he did not actually say any words," police said.

Both Calkins and Mason were affiliated with a White supremacist prison gang, according to court records.

In and out of the court system since 1999, Mason committed separate vehicle thefts that resulted in police pursuit within three months between Nov. 2002 and Feb. 2003, according to a report compiled by the Maricopa County Adult Probation Department.

Mason told the courts in 2003 that he used marijuana and experimented with LSD at 10-years-old. He said he first tried methamphetamine at age 14 and had been using cocaine on a nearly daily basis from ages 13 to 16, the report showed.

Kenneth Shirk, Mason's grandfather, wrote to the court, explaining that Mason's early use of Ritalin eventually turned him to street drugs. After his parent's adopted three children from Ukraine, Mason was forced to leave the family home.

Mason's mother, Cindy Mason, said her son was angry about being kicked out to protect his adopted siblings from exposure to his addictions.

In 2006, Mason pleaded guilty to forgery after attempting to obtain $700 with a stolen check and trying to flee when the clerk contacted the owner of the check, who verified that it had been stolen.

Mason told the courts his addiction to methamphetamine spurred his decision to cash stolen checks, records show.

Witnesses said Mason admitted to killing Calkins, according to police records. To one person, he claimed he beat Calkins with a baseball bat or an ax handle, and to another, "I got him 13 times with an ax," records show.

Police say Mason bragged to another witness that he "almost took this guy's (expletive) head off."

Mason asked another person to bring bleach, towels and gloves to apartment where the murder took place, according to court documents.

At least two people were able to identify Mason in a photo lineup as a person who was in or near the apartment, police records showed.

After stringing together the statements from witnesses, who are identified with numbers in court documents "for their protection," police arrested Mason late Thursday morning in Phoenix in the 1500 block of West Peoria.

Mason was being held in jail Friday on a $1 million bond.

Nothing of value was lost.

Does being part of a white supremacist prison gang actually make either a white supremacist? Lots of people get into different gangs in prison to survive. It's probably a lot more likely that freebuddy has tried turning this copy and pasted article into something its not.

You're quickly becoming a pass on thread individual to me bud.

The victim was also white, was not a person of colour or differing ethnicity. The title doesn't need to be so very demanding regardless of whether or not the rag you got it from used it or not.

Yet more click bait

Were either of them in jail when this event occurred? No, it existed outside the prison system. Try reading the article.
