(Proposal) Vancouver-Boston and Vancouver-NYI

Recommended Posts

To BOS: Higgins, Vey, and Stanton

To VAN: Eriksson and Mcquaid

Boston saves 2-2.5 mill in cap space while improving depth. Vancouver receives size, speed and skill with Eriksson and Mcquaid. Eriksson is used to our conference after playing in Dallas for a lot of years. If we could get him back on track, it could help both our second line AND our second unit powerplay. He's currently on pace for about 45 points, but with a little help he should be able to put up 55, decent numbers for a second liner. He could also switch between the 1st and 2nd line because he has played with the Sedins in the Olympics before. This could give us some creativity and balanced scoring with Vrbata going on the second line if things aren't working out. Keep in mind that Burrows could also play with the Sedins (Burrows could also play both left and right wing). Mcquaid gives us size and grit and would be perfect for this conference, especially in the playoffs if we are going up against big teams like LA or Anaheim.

To NYI: Lack, Sbisa and 2016 2nd

To VAN: Boychuk

The Islanders got Boychuk for a 2nd, a 3rd, and another conditional 3rd. Lack and Sbisa give the Islanders a depth defensemen and a very good backup. Eddie Lack will be 30 when Miller's contract runs out while Markstrom would only be 27, which means that Lack is the right person to be trade no matter how much we love him. Like Mcquaid, Boychuk gives us size and would excel in the more physical Western Conference.

No to both from the Canucks standpoint and, I think from the standpoints of Boston and the Islanders as well.

Trade 1-makes Boston immediately worse. I don't think they want that.

It also has Vancouver giving up 2 young players and a 2/3 liner with a team-friendly cap hit for a 29 year old with a concussion history whose best scoring years appear to have ended (as I write this he has 17 pts in 33 games, good for a 42 pt season; he had 37 last season) and a cap hit of $4.25 million. Yes he could bounce back. Do we really want to take that risk for a player who, while still a good defensive forward who contributes on offence, appears to be on the downside of his career (he was a 70 pt + scorer a few seasons ago.)

McQuaid is a defensive defenceman who has been mostly played 3rd pair minutes. This year he has 2 points in 20 games and is 5th among Bruins defencemen in average time on ice.

Yes, it may help Canucks in the short term. I'd rather keep the chances that Vey and Sbisa will help long term.

Trade 2-As has already been asked, why would the Islanders do this? After one playoff appearance in 7 seasons they finally have a team playing well and could be in the playoffs-maybe even good enough not to go out in the 1st round. Boychuk leads their skaters in average time on ice and is 2nd among Islanders defencemen behind Leddy in scoring and in +/- so for this season. They don't want to get worse this year, but what they'd get back is a goalie with future upside to back up Halak, a defenceman who is a big downgrade for them who has upside (I'm assuming Sbisa is still viewed as a project) and a pick. It makes them worse right now, when Snow, who after his rookie season as manager has had a miserable stretch with the Islanders as GM, really needs a decent performance from his team. If NYI made this trade and faded out of the playoffs, Snow would look really bad-as bad as he's looked during the dark years of the Islanders.

Meanwhile, the Canucks get a 31 year old defensive upgrade in exchange for a young goalie, a young still-developing defenceman and a future draft pick.

It seems inconsistent with a team that wants to rebuild to put so much emphasis on the present at the cost of the future.
