[Report] Leafs fire Randy Carlyle

Recommended Posts

It is no secret that Mike Babcock wants to be the highest paid NHL coach!

Shanny will offer a huge paycheck in the off season

The Leafs have an unlimited amount of money,

The Wings, not so much!

There is no cap on Coaches salary

MIKE B$BC$CK- 5yrs/$40M

Potential suitors

Babcock

Eakins (LOL)

Tortorella

Bylsma

And about 3 coaches that had really strong showings at the World Juniors and Spengler.

But in all honesty, Carlyle has had the Leafs floating around and flirting with the upper echelon teams for quite a while now just needing that 1 or 2 key pieces to make them genuine threats. Yet Nonis never got off his duff to get those pieces.

Getting anyone right now and hoping to get the Leafs into the playoffs on the back of a new system is a pipe dream. This signals an annual free fall into mediocrity that seems to be a Leafs staple every January.

Honestly mind numbing stupidity firing him instead of Nonis

I'm still wondering why this group didn't fire Carlyle long ago. What changed. It's not his fault the higher ups as in Dave Nonis kept this guy around. What did they expect?

Carlyle is a good coach, it's his players that let him down. The last decent move made by this team was trading for JVR. Since that trade they have done nothing but sign overpriced FAs and pick up our scraps ( love santo btw). While a coaching change might help in the short term, as they tuned Randy out! they will fall back onto old habits soon enough.

How many coaches are these guys gonna go through b4 they realize it's the core, not the coach?

This when you know Nonis and the Leafs management is a joke. This is honestly the dumbest time to have fired Carlyle. It's not early in the season nor is late where the season is written off.

What a circus...oh well, Nonis will be gone soon too.

3-7 in their last 10. Can't trade anyone in the top 6 besides lupul. Clarkson, Kessel and Phaneuf are untradeable and the team still hasn't learned to play Carlyle's system after 3 years.

Needed a new voice and waiting would of been worse imo

Hard to believe there's anyone here questioning this move.

The Leafs are once again one of the worst puck possession teams in the NHL - only Buffalo is worse - and the two are headed in the opposite direction. That bodes horribly for their ability to compete down the stretch this season.

Carlyle can only call out his players publicly so many times. He hasn't really managed to adapt and he hasn't managed to stop players like Kessel from floating all over the place.

They were embarrassed by the Jets in their last outing.

This year's version of the Leafs has being propped up by Santorelli, Winnik and Komarov. Santo has been their best player - best underlying numbers - 37.2% offensive zone starts (49.2 finishes), strongest quality of competition among regulars, only a handful of Leafs with better corsi in that context. +11 on a team like that with that situational play is remarkable really - to go with 28 takeaways (+13). Would hate to see the Leafs without their third line this year - and you can only go to the million dollar moneyball MVP well so many years in a row before that dries up.

But I do agree that like Deadmonton, there's more problems than coaching in Onterrible. The center of the universe has been running their team poorly and it's been pretty obvious to even us casual observers. They haven't seemed to be able to identify who their best two way players are for quite some time - so it's not mystery they remain a horrible puck possession team. It also might be as simple as 'you can't have a core consisting of the league's premier floater and expect to be a contender'. But you just re-upped that floater at insane terms - so it aint all on the coach. And you just re-upped your captain in similar fashion - so you're pretty much married to your core. Still, their lineup isn't that bad, so it should be interesting to see what a new coach can do with them.

Another stellar veteran NHL coach available for Edmonton to take a stab at

This is when I ask myself

Who has hurt this team more?

Randy Carlyle?

Or

Dave Nonis?

I'm going with Dave Nonis.

Or

Brian Burke?

I'm going with Burkie - gone but not forgotten

I wish I could feel bad for them, but they won a few games in a row and their media went to the usual obnoxious well - predictably trolling Vancouver overtime (as they do every time they think the Leafs are finally a respectable hockey team) - and even more predictably, they forgot how mediocre their own team is for a week or two. In the dust of how daft they are, the real Leafs re-emerged.

How can Nonis still have his job?

In his press conference he sounded like he had no idea what was going on, not to mention, he looked like he just polished of a family pack of Timbits.
