Please No more gimmicks to the All Star Game

This all star game (If you can call it that) was one of the worse all star games I have ever witnessed as a fan. The game was basically a game is shinny. An all star team in the CHL could have easily beaten both these team the was they played defense tonight. Yeah I know this is the all star game so it doesn't count but I sured missed those days of Gretzky VS Lemieux. While those were all star games at least it had pride on the line for the players. The picking teams just makes no reason to take pride in the team they are playing for at all. I wish the NHL would consider returning to the East VS West format or the very least the North American players vs the European players. Just some added purpose to the game.

Meh.

The East vs West and North America vs World format was also pretty lackluster.

These sort of events have generally had the same problem in pretty much every major pro sport...all flash and no heart. Hockey is no different unfortunately. Generally I avoid the game like the plague and just watch the skills competition, that is still some decent viewing.

The players aren't going to play hard in any exhibition game. And why should they? There is nothing on the line, nothing to win or to lose. Meanwhile their teams are paying them millions so that they perform when the games count. Why should they risk injury in a meaningless friendly?

Industrious is correct, even the other formats of the game were hardly anything to write home about. Imo the only reason people talk about that game being great was they were probably young enough to enjoy that game. I suggest you stop watching the game, it will never live up to your expectations.

Every year people complain about the game when all it is giving the players a week of rest and marketing the "all stars" to the younger generation.

Yea a little less indifference from the players would be nice. Seeing the players play with some purpose would give the ASG some more legitimacy. And don't give me the 'oh it's a nice experience for the fans', it's an all-star game where it's one of the few times the best players in the league are brought together for their skills to be showcased against one another except there just seems to be no incentive for them to do so, which needs to be remedied.

how about this as a format

Team 1 = Pacific Division Players + Metropolitan Division Players

Team 2 = Central Division Players + Atlantic Division Players

Incentives

Winning team gives all teams 2 extra points in the standings

Losing team gets 1 point if its an OT or SO loss

Losing team gets 0 teams if they lose at regulation

Thus this helps teams fighting for a Wild Card spot or if we go back to the Conference Feedings it will help all teams in the division.

Players don't wanna get injured or tire themselves out for regular competition. You're never gonna enjoy the all-star game if you don't take it too seriously, its supposed to be a fun event. In other words, shinny is exactly what it's supposed to be. And shinny has value too: the players seem to be having fun and it gives fans a chance to see their personalities. Not every game has to be Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, after we all we have 9 months of serious hockey to watch all year.

If you can't take it for what it is, well there's no need to watch.

Physical sports like Football and Hockey don't work for All-Star Games. With the internet and 24 hour sports networks. You get highlights of games. It's not like in the 70's and 80's where you'd hardly see the superstars of certain teams play. It's outdated.

The original all-star games was to raise money for players retirement, or to badly hurt player(s).

Non-contact sports like basketball and baseball work as All-Star games. It would be better to have a mid-season break around the Super Bowl instead of an all-star game.

I took it for what it was: Fun. Fun for them. Fun for fans who would otherwise not get to see those lineups play together. Just fun, not serious hockey.

Plus, the preview of the chip technology was very cool. I would definitely like to see it brought into the NHL. Hope they can get it worked out with the NHLPA in regards to how it can be used in terms of contract negotiations and arbitration because it would be really cool to have all of that data.

SKills competition is entertaining though somewhat slow moving at times.

The game...tried to watch it, was only able to match the interest level of the players so turned it off.

As said above...a sport like hockey that is attractive because of its speed and intensity, does not set up well for an all-star format.

Major League Baseball has the AL vs the NL with the winner getting home field advantage for the 1st game (and so, if necessary, 4 of the 7 games) in the world series. That (with a format of Eastern Conference vs Western Conference) has some advantage over what is described above.

As to giving each team with players on the winning team extra points in the standings, can you imagine the bitterness when points earned in the all-star game decide who gets into the playoffs?

For example ...

The Winnipeg Jets of 2019 get a token player in because every team must have at least one player.

The Canucks of 2019 place McCann and Demko on Team 1. Demko doesn't allow a goal and McCann scores a goal and an assist. McCann is injured in the 3rd period and misses the next 20 Canucks games, during which the Canucks go 8-10-2.

Team 2, with the Jets token going scoreless and having no effect, wins the game 4-2.

The Jets end the season with 91 points plus 2 for having their (worthless in the All-star game) token on Team 2, getting the 8th spot in the Western Conference. The Canucks finish 9th in the Western Conference with 92 points.

Do you think someone might call the NHL bush-league and call for changes to the results of the all-star game?

The ASG is for kids.

Hating on it is like wondering why you don't enjoy playing with toys. Its not meant for you.

Nailed It.

If they want to actually make the best game possible then go East vs West and give the winners home ice for final. Just alter the rules so there is no hitting so players don't get hurt.
