blinky123
I just bought a new computer. What programs do I need to install for internet security? I am most concerned about viruses and malicious software being installed on my computer. Also, I am a bit leery of installing free software because you sometimes get a bunch of other programs you don't want. My operating system is Windows 7, and it comes with Microsoft Security Essentials. Is MSE sufficient protection? Any help would be appreciated. lx Birdie xl
Avast one of the best free ones out there. Just make sure you turn off the sound notifications for when it updates or you may poop yourself.
M A K A V E L I 96
Install Avast for antivirus. Change the Windows firewall to block all outgoing connections and then add exceptions for specific applications (browser, etc).
Dogbyte
Download and install AVG Free Download ... it should suffice if you are just doing regular internet browsing, downloading, etc. If you do really serious stuff you may want to pay for the year subscription which is vamped but I've been using AVG free for at least 5 years now and it works great. Install Avast for antivirus. Change the Windows firewall to block all outgoing connections and then add exceptions for specific applications (browser, etc). Hey M A K. you seem pretty advanced with a lot of comp stuff, what's you take on the difference between Avast, and AVG?
blinky123
What about just running Microsoft Security Essentials? Would this be good enough?
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw
I would get Avast! and Malwarebytes. But more importantly, you should really learn how to reformat your computer. It'll really stretch the lifespan.
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw
What about just running Microsoft Security Essentials? Would this be good enough? No. MSE is not very demanding on your machine but that's because it's not a very strong protection software. You seem to be more concerned so go for stronger protection. Avast! and Malwarebytes is the best combo. But again, you should REALLY learn how to reformat your computer.
Heretic
What about just running Microsoft Security Essentials? Would this be good enough? No. Reason is - more low lifes write malware to attack Microsoft than any other company. If you have internet with Telus, you get free Teluse Internet Security for up to 5 computers: http://www.telus.com/en/bc/get-help/internet/security/download-install-security-services/support.do I find that is the best "free" protection. I'm assuming other providers have the same...

Hey M A K. you seem pretty advanced with a lot of comp stuff, what's you take on the difference between Avast, and AVG? AVG sucks so hard you might as well just go download the viruses. Probably the worst choice possible. I'd run my machine with nothing, over AVG any day. It's like the equivalent of wearing a dirty condom with a hole in it. jdatb
unless you plan on visiting a lot of shady sites and downloading lots of torrents and/or illegal downloads, you dont need anything besides MSE. Download and install AVG Free Download ... it should suffice if you are just doing regular internet browsing, downloading, etc. If you do really serious stuff you may want to pay for the year subscription which is vamped but I've been using AVG free for at least 5 years now and it works great. c00kies
When downloading free stuff, just be sure to check every page, as it's those pages that will offer you a program. You will have to hit decline on those pages...don't worry, it doesn't decline the actual program you want to download.

A full clean is the purest way to keep your computer running fast, unless you want to tinker with the BIOS or the hardware.
Toni Zamboni
why do you keep saying that? its not going to help him, or anyone else. it sure helped me when i used to run windows. although... its not for everyone, you need to know what you are doing and this user doesnt sound like he/she should be messing with things if he doesnt have a sound knowledge of computers yet. if yer gonna do a format, use Driver Genius first and back up all your apps and files. since crossing over to mac, ive never used anti-virus software...just a great firewall and caution when installing apps and visiting certain websites..... never have to re-boot or have freeze's like i had with windows(but im sure it must be better by now). to each their own tho, happy computing OP! Mr.DirtyDangles
STAY FROM AVG and AVAST AT ALL COSTS it is almost impossible to remove once on your system and is worthless. MSE is great and works flawlessly with win7. ALSO run something like malware bytes from time to time. Set up MSE to run a scan daily when you are not using the computer and you will be fine. Run full scans not quick ones and check your quarantine daily. Run add block plus as well in you add ons for the browser you are using.

elvis15
... Hey M A K. you seem pretty advanced with a lot of comp stuff, what's you take on the difference between Avast, and AVG? I've been using Avast for some time after trying many others out there. The free version is great and the scans have always seemed to pick up more things that should be picked up than other anti-virus programs I've tested (AVG, Panda, TrendMicro, etc.). Get Avast and CCleaner and run the manual scans occasionally (both the Cleaner and the Registry scans for CCleaner) and it should cover mostly everything. blinky123
Thank you everyone for your help. Can anyone recommend a good imaging program? I want a program that can automatically back up certain files and my hard drive to a second drive. I may also want to back up to an external hard drive. I used to use Norton Ghost but Ghost has been discontinued.
