This is what the next Canadian government should do...

The following is my opinion
1)Simplified tax system
A road map to eliminate GST/PST - Force provincial government to at least match GST or lower in the first five years, then decrease GST 0.5% per year until such tax is eliminated. This would effectively encourage consuming and therefore able to stimulate our economy. From the government perspective there will be no sudden decrease in revenue and there will be plenty of time for the government to come up with an alternative income source.
Eliminate capital gain tax - Government should encourage investment, not the other way around
Eliminate carbon tax - this tax doesn't make any sense, enough said.
Established RHSP - Medical system is getting expensive and it will become a major burden for Canada. This plan will help Canada to pay its humongous bill in the future.
Tax form should be easy to fill for average Canadian to fill, it shouldn't be such a hassle every year.
2)Decrease military spending
Canada is neither invading other countries for her benefit, nor is Canada being threatened in any serious manner, nor is Canada in a position to challenge any country in military. We need a smaller army, in case of an emergency we can depend on the US to bail us out.
3)Retreat from the Middle East
Why are the Canadian air force fighting a war against a country that has nothing to do with us, stop wasting money that doesn't achieve anything and start helping out Canadians in need.
4)Undo everything Harper has done in regards of privacy, anti-terror law
Harper would like to peep your daily life, a normal Canadian government doesn't do that. We don't combat terrorism with fear, we stop terrorists with better education and immigrant system.
5)Unban automatic weapon
Guns are just simply tools, imagine a gangster is able to acquire automatic weapon via illegal source, and law abiding Canadians are not allow to do the same to protect themselves?
6)Encourage healthy lifestyle
Increase cigarettes tax by 500%
Increase alcohol tax by 200%
That's all what i can think of so far, what do you think of it and what do you think the next government should be doing?

Can't get any simpler easier than 0%.

So how about that but keep the consumption/sale taxes...that should pay the interest on the bonds.

6)Encourage healthy lifestyle

Increase cigarettes tax by 500%
Increase alcohol tax by 200%

Jack it up too high and smuggling becomes feasible on a problematic scale...

Another one: reform the Supreme Court of Canada to consist only of one Trevor Linden. He is our country's most divine force for righteousness and can be the only one trusted to adjudicate our nation's most pressing moral afflictions.

Can I get an amen

I guess you work for the Fraser Institute.

First of all you can't have our social and medical network without taxation. Sales tax does not inhibit growth, that's garbage.

My solution:

If you invest in 100% Canadian owned and operated businesses (stocks, provincial and federal bonds) it is not a part of income taxes, rather a flat 5% tax. This will encourage investment in Canadian businesses, and provide capital, and growth.

Make all provincial and federal sales tax across Canada including Alberta 10%. It's easy to calculate. The revenue is split 50% to the province, 40% to the federal government, and 10% to local government. This gives local government additional funding since the feds and the provinces have been offloading all services to local governments lately. That way the sales tax is easy, fair and across all Canada.

You're part on Canada's military is a joke. Canada's military is already underfunded. However I would dump the F-35 project and go ahead with the Super Arrow. I would provide funding to emergency response for both Military and Coast Guard. Get the Armed Forces to assist in every day lives. In other words, troops assist in things like traffic control (traffic cops), engineers assisting in road projects, small medical hospitals/clinics that are able to assist in major disasters. That way our troops aren't always overseas, they are helping in the community.

Invest in education with emphasis on engineering, science and technology so Canada can have a diversified economy instead of a 19th century one based on resources. Allow Canadians to access their EI to take time off for re-training, and upgrading skills.

Work with industry to provide low cost if not, no cost post-secondary education, complete with on the job experience.

Work on alternate fuels, renewables, to secure our long-term energy stability.

Provide funding to get to the source of homelessness, and people staying on welfare, etc. There is definitely a percentage of Canada's population that can't function on their own without help. But the ones that can work part-time, or need skills training, medical or mental health treatment. Stop with the band-aid solutions, and get to the root of the problem.

Create a "Good Corporate Citizen" tax structure for Corporate Tax. Have a system where companies that hire more staff get tax breaks, invest in efficiency without layoffs, that are environmentally sound, invest in training your staff. Basically the smarter your company is run, you benefit to a lower tax. You constantly cut staff, pollute, outsource, invest outside of Canada, you pay more tax. This will reward companies to do the right thing, instead of just looking at the bottom line.

Eliminate the Senate, it's useless, and more pork barrelling. Cut the size of the House of Commons by half. All MP's and MLA's cannot vote themselves raises. It matches any raises that provincial and federal employees get. Any MLA/MP that is found guilty of any felonies while in government not only gets dismissed, but their pensions are removed as well.

Environmental legislation that has teeth to it, complete with enforcement.

Agreed on the anti-terror legislation, get rid of it.

While we're at it. No more polymer bills, abolish any micro chip technology related to passports. If it means we tick off the US, so be it. Go back to the gold standard, so that the Canadian dollar has real wealth attached to it.

Have the Canadian Mint, and anything related to printing money a part of the Federal Government, not owned by outside banks.

Create a Federal bank, providing loans, mortgages, so that even small towns and villages have a physical bank. (Perhaps a post office attached to every one). The post office can sell lottery tickets, collectables, provide office services, internet/wifi access.

Start a crown corporation to build medical supplies, beds, instruments, medication, materials, and manufacture them at a cost plus 5% basis.

Have this corporation provide medical supplies to hospitals and clinics. Hopefully lowering the cost of healthcare and creating jobs.

Change immigration rules so that for the first five years, you cannot be outside Canada for more than 90 days in a Calendar year.

Do so and you lose citizenship. Emphasis not on what money you bring in, but what skills you bring in. Engineers, doctors, technicians, people who will create jobs IN Canada get to the front of the line.

With firearms, I am quite content with the Firearms Act. I would make a minor change that all firearms have a maximum of 10 rounds internally or in a magazine, regardless of Restricted or Non-Restricted. I would still ban automatic weapons.

I would however allow Restricted handguns of 4" down from 4.14" in barrel length. 0.14" of an inch is not much easier to conceal.

End rant.

I'll play.

1) eliminate income tax

2) raise GST to 20%

Voila a system that isn't prejudice to socio economics. The rich pay more when they buy more. Don't wanna pay taxes, don't buy anything. Wanna buy a Ferrari? Here's your $50,000 tax bill.

3) introduce a "scaled" user fee for medical visits. Ex. $50 for ER visit. $20 for walk in clinic etc. Pay out each Canadian citizen enough for 5 visits (or whatever the number needs to be) every year. If you've been to an ER you will see how overrun the system is. Need to divert non emergencies to the appropriate place.

4) random drug testing for social program recipients. 1 positive test, warning. 2 (10hrs week) basic labor position (snow shoveling, mowing, etc) to receive benefits. 3 increase in hourly requirements.

That was fun. Silly and not thought out. Thank God I will never be in politics.

This is a much better idea than the OP. Tax the rich more than the poor, give us more money at first let us decide where it goes

So you're saying the government should tell me how to live my life? There are already laws to protect the average citizen from cross fire of the effects of both of these substances. If I choose to put my own body in danger in my own personal space that is my right not the government's to dictate.

Completely agree. Slippery slope as well. We should "tax" athletes as well, how many broken arms am I paying for from skiers? How many twisted ankles from runners etc. Can't legislate health, you can incentvize it though.

In general I like lower taxes, so this sounds good.

I agree to somewhat, but there should be some sort of regulation in.

Increase alcohol tax by 200%
wtf is this? I don't smoke or drink really, but WTF?

#4 shouldn't be a problem if you have nothing to hide...

Not this argument. In the free world, we live under the principal of "innocent until proven guilty". The onus isn't on the citizen to prove they have nothing to hide, the onus is on the government to prove that there is a good chance you may have something to hide before carrying out an investigation.

The reasoning for this is that the government will often try to decide that you have something to hide for stupid reasons. For example, in many places a cop will decide that "being black" means you are probably carrying drugs and should be searched. Or maybe they decide that members of certain activist groups are now criminals and use surveillance to suppress free speech. Or maybe being part of a certain ethnic group is now illegal. An extreme example, but genocide does occur in many parts of the world, and can you imagine if Nazi Germany had the technology we do today?

Using this logic, would you be comfortable with government putting cameras in every home to make sure you aren't committing crimes? The problem with this is, it's not you that gets to decide if you have something to hide, it's the government, and the government is often wrong.

I am in 99% agreement with all of this. Great job identifying problems and solutions. (no sarcasm)

So when/where are you running for election? Let me know so I can cast my vote for you.
