Predators' Mike Ribeiro sued for alleged sexual assault on nanny

Recommended Posts

Mike Ribeiro's former nanny in Texas is suing the Predators centre for assaulting her and suing his wife for threatening her in 2012.

The lawsuit contains no specific details except alleging Ribeiro caused "body injury" when he acted "intentionally, knowingly and recklessly." Her attorney Larry Friedman told The Associated Press on Thursday that his client was sexually assaulted by Ribeiro soon after she had graduated from high school, though she did not immediately go to authorities because she was "terrified."

"My client was and is a young girl, and no young girl should be subjected to that kind of behaviour, the kind of conduct by an adult that she's complaining about," Friedman said.

The woman also alleges Ribeiro's wife "made inappropriate comments and/or threats." She is seeking over $1 million US in damages along with other relief. The lawsuit was filed July 24 and now is in federal court in Texas.

TMZ first reported on the lawsuit Wednesday.

Ribeiro's attorney issued a statement Thursday saying he wouldn't discuss the facts around the allegations publicly.

"I can say that the Ribeiros plan to vigorously fight this lawsuit," attorney Brian Lauten wrote. "At the same time, Mike will maintain his focus of doing all he can to help Nashville win its first-ever Stanley Cup."

Friedman said Ribeiro was between his stint with the Dallas Stars and the Washington Capitals at the time of the alleged incident.

The Predators said in a statement they have been made aware of the complaint that dates back to when Ribeiro played in Dallas.

"Mike has indicated that the charge is without merit and is prepared to vigorously defend himself," the statement said. "We will allow the legal process to move forward without further comment."

The AP does not generally identify people who say they are victims of sexual abuse.

Ribeiro was released last year by the Coyotes, who bought out the final three years of his $22 million US contract. General manager Don Maloney said then that Ribeiro had "real behavioural issues" they couldn't tolerate.

The forward has said he went to work on his personal life after that season. He and his wife came to Nashville together, even paying for their own airfare, before signing with the Predators.

Nashville officials said in July that they did their homework, including talking to Ribeiro's wife, before signing him to a one-year, $1.05 US million deal.

Now Ribeiro leads Nashville with 40 assists, also ninth overall in the NHL going into Thursday. He leads the Predators' forwards averaging 18 minutes, 45 seconds of ice time and also is tied for first with 52 points.

I wonder if he will be suspended?

He won't be suspended unless charged criminally. This is just a lawsuit at this point. And the Preds are aware, Ribeiro has know about this situation for a while and I assume the informed the Preds so they could be prepared. Whether they knew before they moved for him is another story but I don't think they're likely to release him considering he's contributing to the team and they're very good right now.

Poor Nashville first they had the whole Radulov fiasco now this..

I always have a tough time believing stories from these people who come out of nowhere and try to sue these rich athletes for millions of dollars. But Mike Ribeiro definitely seems like the kind of guy that would do something like this. He's a creep.

He's also rail thin..

I agree, reading this does, unfortunatly, make me think that the alleged victim is just hunting for money. I guess we can't really judge until a verdict comes down from the courts. If he did infact harm this young lady, well then thats just plain sad. Whats with all these NHLers and violence, Kane and the cabbie, Voynov and his domestic abuse, what ever happened to the good old days when NHLers just did a bunch of coke and kept to themselves away from the ice.

C'mon man....grow up....

Your actaully falling for this publicity stunt? So it took her alleged victim 3 years to confess to being assaulted? This is just another plot for a person to make money off a celebrity; furthermore, the victim will have no proof of the claim because in court you need proof. eg pics of the assault or video such as bruise marks or scars, so this case will be thrown out. Oh yeah, its a cruel world but that's how it works; Riberio will hire a top notch lawyer and easily win this case. Maybe the Ducks hired the victim, since they know they can't beat Predators

Sued for 1 million?... He can afford it, no problem..

Have him charged, so it will stick for awhile...

Seriously... didn't the Dallas Stars just pay him mega-bucks to go away? Monkey see, monkey do. So simple. He doesn't need to use his brain much more than that. The girl probably feels it's all so unjust how he's actually benefitted from his bad behaviors. Unless she sees proper consequences experienced by the perpetrator(s),..or apologies offered-up to the offended -there'll be no real resolution(s) or peace, here.

This sounds like another very spoiled and entitled professional athlete who needs to become aquainted with 'real' world consequences. You go girl!

I take it you don't know anyone who has been sexually assaulted before.

Lucky you.

Yeah, I don't like to take these things at face value either,

Most of us have been on the receiving end of lies before and I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt,

But Mike Riberio make it sooooo harrrrrd…….these reports have been coming out ever since he made the NHL,

Either he's the unluckiest guy in the world, or where there is smoke there is fire.

Good news for everyone that isn't apart of the predators organization

Not really, I think anytime something like this happens to any NHL player is makes the entire league look bad. I would just as soon this sort of thing doesnt happen at all.
