[Proposal] New All-Star Weekend Format

Recommended Posts

I don't really find the All-Star experience riveting, as the game doesn't really carry any consequences and the skills competition is weak at best.

I think a mini tournament is where it needs to go.

1. Each division has an All-Star lineup (probably not a full roster, but let's say 6 forwards 4 defense plus 2 goalies

2. Instead of skills competition, the 4 teams play a semifinal game each (West Final and East Final)

3. The second day, there can be an alumni game and then the All Star Final between Western and Eastern Champ.

Here's the stakes : The winning division team earns 2 regular season points for each team in their division, giving that division a small boost over the other in the overall standings.

I don't envision full 60 minutes for each game, I was thinking like 4 on 4 hockey for two 15 minute periods in the first round (as there will be two games played the first day) and then a two 20 minute period ''Final" game the next day.

Hell, they can even win a trophy at the end.

I know there will be details to be nitpicked, but overall I like the idea, especially much more than a skills competition ( which every team does already) and a meaningless game.( Hopefully I didn't propose an idea someone else already thought of)

Thoughts?

I liked it until you said that the All-Star game should influence the standings. Those 2 points could heavily influence wildcard standings and home ice advantage in the playoffs. Imagine your team missing the playoffs because a bunch of stars from other teams didn't play well enough in the all-star game. We shouldn't compromise the fairness and integrity of regular competition just to make the All-Star game more entertaining.

We get 1230 serious NHL games per year to watch, plus playoffs. Let the All-Star game remain a fun, lighthearted event.

I think that opposed to giving them 2 points and affecting the standings, they should just be given home ice in all applicable situations during the playoffs. Like Avelanche, I don't like the idea of the ASG actually affecting the numbers, but I have no problem with the game having some value and worth to make it actually important and interesting again.

If you want the All-Star game to mean something, then get some corporate sponsor to put up $5M to go to charity. The players from the winning team could select which charities would benefit.

There is no way that an exhibition game should ever influence the regular season and/or potentially the playoffs. Just because baseball does it doesn't mean it's a good idea.

As for the format, I am fine with the way it is. The whole draft thing is kind of entertaining. But if they were to change it, they should go back to having the defending Stanley Cup Champions vs the All Stars.

So then, there'll be three games that weekend? I think I'd keep the contests which allow players to individually showcase their skills (hardest shot, accurate shooting, elimination shootout and fastest skater) since I'd enjoy watching snipers like Stamkos and Ovie match up in the accuracy shooting, for example. I also like the idea of the skills challenge, like what the NBA has done. It's the tacky breakaway challenge that needs to go.

Considering how many times 3 points are handed out for a game instead of two, I am surprised at how much some of you quibble over a couple of points handed out to the winners.

The way I see it, if there's nothing on the line, it's not worth watching. It doesn't matter if there's all the talent in the world. If there's no reason to play hard, where's the entertainment?

It's bad enough that the NHL gives losing teams points. .just wanted more points for winners, that's all

I like the idea of changing it up a little bit, for sure.

For the skills comp, I think it would be better if we actually had the best of the league participate instead of the best of the all-stars. I don't know if every team has it's own skills comp, but we would take the winners of each of the categories from each team and have them go at it, reaching the actual hardest shot, fastest skater, etc. in the league.
