      Forum-specific Rules   07/11/2017

These are board specific rules for the Trades and Rumors forum designed to provide organization and a better experience for everyone. Please review these rules before posting new threads.
THREAD ETIQUETTE   1. Please search for an existing thread before posting. This forum can be very fast moving, so it's understandable if redundant threads are inadvertently posted. In such a case, please use the report feature to request removal of redundant threads.    2. Provide a clearly identifiable topic title so that users can readily understand the content. The title should include any and all teams involved, as well as player names or other personnel involved as appropriate.   3. All trades, signings, rumors and other news MUST include a linkable source. Simply posting the name of the source is not enough. Effort should also be made to copy and paste the full article, or at the very least the relevant portion of text from the source to the first post of the thread. Moderators may remove low-quality threads in favour of high-quality threads.

Affixed to the front of your title should be a label that identifies the type of transaction that is taking place. For all trades use [TRADE]. For all signings use [SIGNING]. For all waiver-wire transactions use [WAIVERS]. For all rumours use [RUMOUR].
For articles or news items that don't fit into the above categories, affix an appropriate label of your choice such as [NEWS], [ARTICLE] or [MISC].   4. When the status of a thread changes a new thread can be created. The new thread should reflect the change and help focus the discussion on current events. e.g. Someone may create a new thread when a rumor becomes a trades. The old thread will be locked by the moderating team.    5. Do not misrepresent the contents of your thread or post false trades or rumors. Trolling will result in a permanent suspension.

SOURCES   The following source types are considered INVALID. Any links to posts or threads on other message boards Any links to personal blogs Any news heard on the radio that does not have a link to an audio vault or podcast Any news seen on television that does not have a link to online video Any news spread by word of mouth
Additionally, certain sources may be be blacklisted due to poor credentials, clear traffic-mongering etc. Blacklisted sources will be posted here.
Thank you for your co-operation and please PM the Administrator or Moderators if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions regarding this forum.

[Extension] Derek Dorsett and Luca Sbisa re-signed

Recommended Posts

not a fan of the sbisa signing but the deal for dorsett is well worth it

Sbisa's been a bit of a scapegoat since he signed. Yeah, he makes mistakes. So do other players. It's just that more people jump on his.

we needed a new guy to jump off the bieksa lynching

Also… anyone consider that JB might know he can move Miller (or someone else) in the offseason and save that cap to spend on F and D? It's worth considering.

Keeping the quality dressing room is a big factor going into next year regardless of what happens in the playoffs.

These things are game planned out by intelligent GMs so that they can see money coming on and off of the books at certain times so that they line-up with other contracts expiring. JB is no Nonis… I believe he knows what he is doing…. otherwise there would be little incentive to do this now as opposed to after the playoffs.

People seem to be forgetting that JB is the guy with every team's depth chart on his office walls. Those who think that he is making these decisions without context are just clueless. JB already knows who he's moving, who is staying and what he intends to pay each player. This does certainly signal that someone is being moved though.

Dorsett makes more than Higgins, has 10 less points and plays in less key situations. Do no wrong Benning wavering?

Both are good signings. Both are at or under market value.

Everyone complained about Gillis' NTC/LTC's, but that's why contracts signed by him were usually under fair market value.

I think Sbisa has been a solid pickup, and has been solid for us. Perfect - far from it, but a good, solid dman that can throw his weight around. Look around the league, 3.5 - 4 million is what a 3rd/4th dman commands.

That was already clear awhile ago.

Sbisa has made a ton of improvement since early in the season. I was one of the haters in the beginning, but I saw a great improvement from him. He's shown flashes of becoming a great D, pretty young at 25 and willing to lay hits. Good re-signing for me on both Dorsett and Sbisa.

But this just shows 1 or 2 core will be gone by this fall. I think 1-2 of higgins/bieksa/hamhuis/matthias/richardson will be the goners.

My pick is Higgins and Hamhuis. Hammer has been sooOOoOoo slow this year, and it shows. So many times forwards just blow by him and create chances because of it.

ya well nobody is going to trade for a 6th defender at 3.6m

Dorsett has done a lot more than what people on here are giving him credit for, if you look around the league the term on his contract was very well deserved.

Sbisa is still young and can improve, also very underrated on here. And he is still very young. Though I think it is a tad high

Sbisa underrated because he's big and can hit?

He has 11pts and is 2nd worst in the entire league for GA per 60mons.... UNDERRATED ARE YOU KIDDING?

He's not an NHL player!!!!! And your going to pay him nearly 4mill?

Makes the suspect Tanev deal look like a home run.

I'm amongst the biggest JB believers there was, I loved everything he has done.

But these 2 deals are anchors and potentially crippling.

Your going to walk from 18G from Matthias and 10 from Weber why? Because these guys can take and throw a hit? Give a break.

They just set the entire roster back for the next 3-4 years with this crap

I think we know exactly what we have in Dorsett. I really like this guy on our team and am glad he's signed to more time with us. But with that said, I wish we were able to get him signed for just a bit less, considering this was a career year and there is no guarantee he will produce at the same rate. If he doesn't, then he'd have to be put on the 4th line and that's a lot of money for a 4th liner. Overall though, I can live with this.

It's the Sbisa contract I'm unsure about. He does hit and block shots. But while he's certainly improved, he still makes a lot of bonehead defensive plays and doesn't exactly have a great scoring flair either. Benning is basically buying the guy's potential rather than what he is right *now*, and that worries me. With that said, he HAS improved and he was making not much less this past year so I guess it was inevitable that if we were to keep him he was going to be signed for about this amount. I just hope it pays off.

4 years is too long for Dorsett. Sbisa should not have crossed 3 mill per.

Oh well I can love with the Sbisa contract. Dorsett is still iffy.

All the armchair GMs be like, "I swear I could sign each for $1 mill" ::D

Sbisa deal is right on the money imo. He'll transition into a top 4 role soon. And Dorsett, well he's the only guy that does what he does other thank Kass and deserves it. Plus with no NTCs, JB also paid for some flexibility which is totally understandable. Fair deals. Means one or both of Richardson/Matthias walk comes free agency. Possiblilty of Miller getting moved & one of Hammer/Juice gone at next season's end.

Both are pricey contracts. I assume Richardson and Matthias are gone then. We will not be players in free agency at all, which is fine I guess.

I don't know if JB has plans to move some guys out to accommodate these contracts. Maybe Hansen is getting traded? Can't have ~5M locked into two fourth line players.

Love Dorsett but way to much cap hit for a bottom 9 role player in this cap era.

But Tavares is signed @ $5.5 mill cap hit? Does that mean Dorsett is 1/2 the player he is?!

With regards to Dorsett being the 5th highest paid forward now…. so what? In the big picture that means we are getting good value already for Bones, Higgy, Hansen, Horvat, etc. Matthias will get more than that in the offseason.

We will have more low end contracts coming on the roster in the form of rookies… that's an expedience that will continue over the coming years…. those help balance out the cap structure.

He's being paid as a high end veteran 3rd liner/4th liner… similar to Ott, Neil, Nystrom, Prust, ….. considering he is going to be surrounded in the bottom 6 by a lot of rookies/young inexperienced players for the duration of the contract it's completely in line.

Those figures are eye popping at first, but both players have intangibles beyond their stats...Dorsett gave us a legit fourth line this season, especially earlier in the year, and his fearless junkyard dog style of play has had a ripple effect on the team.....Benning obviously thinks so.

Sbisa is one of the most improved players on the squad IMO..got off to a shaky start, but brings size and physicality to a somewhat soft defence core.
