(Discussion) anyone worth plucking from Chicago?

Recommended Posts

Chicago is gonna need to shed some salary like us BUT is there anyone you would be interesting in dealing for?

Sharp, versteeg, bickell, Kruger or Nordstrom?

I would like bickell for the 3rd line but at 4m we would need to deal burrows probably

On a more complicated note, how much would you spend for saad? Offer sheet? Virtanen value?

We could probably find another Stanton in their waiver wire somewhere, and I'd try for Versteeg for like $2 million.

He's not the biggest but is gritty and can put up decent numbers (above 0.5 p.p.g. this regular season).

Sharp would be great but as a rental he'd be pricey, as would Bickell IMO. If we really wanted to piss them off we could try to offer-sheet Saad.

The key words in your post are "gonna need to shed some salary like us." Especially the words "like us."

At present Canucks have about $3.2 million to sign 6 skaters if the cap doesn't rise (generalfanager.com.) If the cap goes to Bettman's most recent predection of $71.5 million, Canucks have $5.7 million to sign 6 skaters to get to a 23 man roster.

Add Weber (who Benning has said he intends to re-sign) at say $1 million, Clendening at $900K (the approximate price to give him a qualifying offer,) Corrado at $700K, Baertschi at $900K (it will actually be just over that just to issue a qualifying offer) and Vey for a year at $800K (approximately-his qualifying offer must be just over that) and the Canucks could get out for $4.3 million over their current signings, a little over $1 million under the cap if it goes to $71.5 million. If the cap were to stay the same as this year they'd need to shed some salary just to get down to the cap.

A team which is up against the cap, as the Canucks appear to be at present, is in no position to take advantage of other teams needing to shed expensive contracts. If they manage to make a move to shed cap that will change things, but right now the Canucks don't have cap room.

You mentioned "Sharp, versteeg, bickell, Kruger or Nordstrom."

Sharp-$5.9 million. Bickell $4.0 million. Canucks can't afford either of them and still have room to fill in the roster.

Being in trouble with the cap will cause the Hawks to need to keep cheaper players like Kruger and Nordstrom, not deal them. If they become available it won't be because the Hawks have cap trouble.

Versteeg $2.2 million, the Canucks might be able to afford, just, with Versteeg instead of Corrado or perhaps Vey. Still, Versteeg's contract @$2.2 mill may not be one the Hawks want to move to deal with the cap issue. I also don't think a 29 year old 3rd line RW is a priority for the Canucks at present, with Vrbata, Burrows, Kassian, Hansen and Dorsett already under contract and Versteeg not being young enough to be considered a building block for the future.

This thread could become more meaningful after Benning makes whatever moves he's going to make and the cap is determined so we know what room, if any, the Canucks will have. Until then, Canucks are in no position to benefit from other teams' cap problems.
