sharbinder
To Edmonton: Kevin Bieksa Christopher Higgins Nicklas Jensen 2015 5th To Vancouver: Leon Draisaitl 2015 3rd Reasoning: Leon is not going to be happy having his future planned out to be the 3rd line center on the oilers , he has much more talent then that . It gives the Canucks that potential 1C after Henrik . I believe the value is there , as they need defense & a good defensive forward in Higgins who can kill penalties & add that vet presence throughout the line-up . If Edmonton trades him they'll expect a quality player back, not a 33 year old pending ufa (after this season) defenceman coming off a brutal season, a third liner and a probable bust of a prospect

Would you trade Virtanen for a package were the key piece is a defenceman who seriously regressed the previous season and will be an UFA in a year? This isn't a fair comment as Canucks and oilers are in different places. Oilers need Experience and role players to complement their core. Honestly think Lack or Markstrom would be part of a deal for DL Also would people waive NTC for Edmonton? No idea
Skirbs11
Horrible trade for Edmonton, If it was Hamhuis over Bieksa they may consider it

If the team is in a position to turn into a contender , those are the trades you make . Why has Pittsburgh traded their 1st this year , their young defenseman Despres .... GM's make those decisions to insulate the talent they have drafted with supporting Cast pieces . The Canucks are a middling team likely to take a dip , who need to bring in young . Like I explained in the OP , Oilers have their young players in the system . (*McDavid , RNH , Hall , Eberle , Yakupov , Nurse , Klefbom , Yakimov ) They need to add to these players with experience & leadership to help change the mentality to start winning . Sean Monahan
There's a lot to be said here, but the short answer? No. As a Canuck fan I'd be thrilled if JB pulled this off but I just don't see this happening.

Honestly think Lack or Markstrom would be part of a deal for DL Also would people waive NTC for Edmonton? No idea Except both Bieksa and Higgins are very short term fixes. Edmonton won't be contending for a few more years. They can leave Draisaitl in the minors to develop and sign free agents for "experience and role players" There's no need for them to sell off last years 3rd overall pick for two players in their 30's that won't be around when the team is finally in a position to contend. qwijibo
I would think any deal for him would have to include Tanev.

Sean Monahan
Free agents don't go to Edmonton... They might now. New management, coaches, and a player like McDavid can change those things. FA's would still be forced to live in Edmonton, but there's now upside to that hellhole.

Pittsburg's pick was expected to be a late 1st, not 3rd overall, They traded away Despres for immediate help because they are in a position to contend (Edmonton isn't) Edmonton is stil a very young teram and can afford to be patient a little while longer. If he could be had that cheaply im sure 28 other teams would outbid Vancouver
qwijibo
Free agents don't go to Edmonton... High end free agents maybe,. But we aren't talking about premiere players here. w're talking depth players who generally have fewer offers to choose between. Do you think Brian Flynn would turn down an offer from Edmonton if he had no other options?
48MPHSlapShot
Hmm, we ship the Oilers a bunch of scraps and get a high quality prospect AND a 3rd? I like it!

Dutch_Canuck
Although i don't think Edmonton would do the deal, Its scary to think how low some of our fans value players like Higgins and Bieksa.. I understand how they had mediocre seasons (with some terrible spree's) statistically but these guys are valuable pieces to any team. Bieksa is great at taking the spotlight from other players who cant handle it quite as well (I.E Edler, Tanev, Sbisa) and Higgins is a guy who does all the little things well that unfortunately go unnoticed.
