Israel is thanking Canada for helping to block a major international plan to work towards ridding the world of nuclear weapons.

But there is also widespread international disappointment that Canada, which along with Britain, supported the United States in opposing the adoption of the document at the United Nations review conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The document called on the UN to hold a disarmament conference on the Middle East by 2016, but such a conference could have forced Israel to publicly acknowledge that it is a nuclear power — something the Jewish state has never done.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Stephen Harper for what he called Canada's principled stand during a weekend telephone call, according to Harper's office in Ottawa.

Austria, which spoke on behalf of 49 countries at last week's conference, said the result spoke to the wide divide over what nuclear disarmament should mean.

But former Liberal foreign affairs minister Lloyd Axworthy supported the Conservatives' decision saying that dragging the Middle East issue into the talks was a ploy by some countries to embarrass Israel.

makes me proud to be Canadian

Anyone else noticing that the Libs are starting to look like it will be 'business as usual' post-Harper?

starting to look that way. That said, and I've never voted LIb, at this point getting the Cons out of power should be the goal of tis election.

I wonder if more people will turn to the NDP due to the Libs bending like a reed in the wind, splitting the vote, and the Cons will maintain power. Worst-case scenario.

Or maybe the Ndp can win outright. They just took Alberta, which was unthinkable.

Again, our government is acting against the wishes of Canadians.

Which Canadians?

Not this one.

I'm sure I'm not the only one neither.

As much as I hate weapons of mass destruction, having all the "nice" countries disarm is like banning guns from the average citizen - do you think the "bad" guys will hand in their nukes/guns?

I don't think so.......the Libs are the only chance I think. that said, more of this kind of Con support and they will be cutting their own throat!

We saw what happened when Ukraine was disarmed. Personally I'm fine with the move and support our allies as well.

So you support the idea of Ukraine being able to use nukes on Russia? Nice viewpoint..

Again, our government is acting against the wishes of Canadians.

This.

What the hell is a ban on nukes?? Are China or Russia going to comply?? It would really be a move to disarm ourselves, meaning the West, so those who don't can say, hands up, give us your stuff. No thanks.

you don't think the effort should be made? If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

WW3 will all be about nuclear warfare...

Those nukes are costing money and time sitting idle and some a-hole will have the balls and stupidity to use them..

It's like the Libs are doing it deliberately. If they want to win this thing they better start making some moves. They're losing Quebec now, and that was supposed to be an automatic. Aren't the old Liberals who've been around the block telling JT that he's blowing it? Or has he shut them out? He doesn't seem to want to be PM at the moment.

There won't a WW3 in our lifetime.

Economies are too tied now. Its going to be proxy wars at most.

It's very similar to the NDP in the last provincial election in BC.......like they're banking on people being so fed up with the Cons that they don't really have to do anything to win but show up.
