Kesler a modern day Neely?

Second line centres like Ryan Kesler are rare. Watching his post-season play is depressing, to know the Canucks organization did not get enough in return from him.

One can argue that he demanded a trade, and reportedly gave a list of two teams, both of which are playing against each other right now. But I'd argue that we could have played this out better.

Kesler had a no-trade clause contract. He signed it, and would have respected it. He's too big of a competitor not to continue to give it his all on the ice. He's still relatively young, and comes with a low cap. We would have been a better team with him on it.

Don't get me wrong. Bonino isn't a bad centre. But his compete level will never come close to Kesler. Sbisa is a hard-hitting dman, but is a bit unpredictable and clumsy at key times. Draft picks, receiving a 1st and 3rd last year, giving a third pick in this year's deep draft, we'll see how that all pans out.

But the bottom line is that Kesler will remain one of the most competitive two-way centres in the game, and haunt us yet for a good number of years on a team within our own division. He may come with a higher cap hit than the aforementioned players, but it's still a modest price for the return. I hope in a year or two's time, I'm eating my words, but losing Kesler still stings bad, like a modern day Neely.

The Kesler trade was embarrassing for this organization for sure. You'll find no team that wants to win out there will create a situation in which a player like that wants out.

Detroit? No they'd never let him go. But we're following their model, right?

Boston? No they'd never let him go either.

Chicago? Nope.

The list would continue.

The Neely trade was less embarrassing and more stupid.

As far as comparisons go, the Bure deal would be much more representative.

Established star; newer GM; similarity in pieces received.

I'm not sure about that. We received Jovo in his prime, and he had a longer future than Bure. Plus, we shipped Bure off to Florida, far, far away from our division.

What I like, is that we received 6 or 7 memorable & gritty seasons outa' Kesler(was pi**ed he signed w/Philly; yet he proved he was worth the early coin); then we parlayed him into more 'futures' & contributing fringe players.

Look at TBay with Martin St Louis..In the cap world, to be sustainably competitive, you've GOT to recycle some attractive assets.

This is BS IMO. If a player wants out you really have no choice but to trade him. Maybe not right away, but you have to trade him in the nearish future. Players that want out become a locker room cancer very easily (iirc Kesler already was one to some extent by the time he asked to get shipped out). How many teams have actually held onto players that said they wanted out recently? St Louis? Got traded. Rick Nash? Got traded.

He's definitely taken his game to another level

Especially in these playoffs

The guys on a mission

The canucks failed to acquire secondary scoring

1 sniper 1 PMD and we would of still been contending

Sigh...

There is no way in heck we'd still be contending with the joke of defense we have on this team.

This is just it though. WHY did he want out? Because the Canucks failed to maintain a winning tradition. They blundered and botched their way from President's Trophy types to bottom-feeders in a big way. And then the return was poor considering the player and affordable cap hit. St. Louis and Rick Nash also had short lists, but look at the return they got. Especially Nash. Good player, but THAT much better? No.

I'm prepared to let it go though. What's done is done. And it's not like what Kesler did tonight was out of the ordinary. Shot, rebound, Belesky goal while Chicago stumbled on a bad change.

If the Ducks win the cup, i'll be happy for Kesler. He deserves more respect than what a lot of fans around here have decided to give him.
