No Major Draft Day Deals-But! (Discussion)(Long Read)

Recommended Posts

Ok, looking at this mess one more time, I was thinking that Benning,Linden, and Aqualini have probably had this discussion and have looked at the development angle and the financial angle and probably would have agreed with the following scenario .

2015 Draft

We move only players we have to move, which in this case is a lesser goalie, a lesser dman or 2, and a lesser forward. (All minor role players)

Possible players moving at draft day..........Lack/Markstrom, Bieska, and Higgins

Bennings only goal will to be to gather a 2 and 3 round pick, and move enough players, to open up enough space for those that can not be waived, which is why Virtanen stays in junior after his 8 game stint.

2015-2016 Season

Canucks are not as competitive, as Edmonton, Dallas, Calgary, LA and Colorado pick their play up and there are almost no easy games for the Sedin's or the Canucks

2015-2016 Deadline

Benning has Linden's and Aqualini's permission to move major pieces, as Aqualini knows he has to protect his asset long term. The Canucks at this junction are in 18th place over all. But Benning pulls the plug.

Possible players that move will be, Hamhuis, Vrbata, Hansen, Kassian

Going into the 2016 draft,

Benning will have a multitude of 1st and 2nd round picks and the Canucks will be drafting from the #5 to 7 spot over all.

Despite all the criticism CDC has spewed at Benning, Benning sits at the 2016-2017 draft with 3 first round picks and several 2nds. Picks a elite forward and several highly rated defenceman, and stocks the cupboard full.

2016-2017 Season

Canucks suffer through their first full season of loosing, crowds are thinning and Benning says that the Canucks are in a developing process, and he has received a great deal of interest in Edler and Bonino. Benning states that Edler is not on the market.

2016-2017 Deadline

Edler and Bonino are traded for a mid-1st round draft pick and a blue chip prospect, after Benning sweetens the pot with Bonino.

2017 Draft

With several very high picks, 2 pick OA , plus the Edler pick, Benning completes his young core.

Summer of 2017

With the UFA market in full swing, and the Sedin's in the last year of their contract, Benning sets out to fill the holes in his roster with UFA's, because of the Canucks recent purging of veterans, the Canuck find themselves with millions of dollars in cap space, and a very full prospect cabinet, as well many that have just graduated into the NHL. Benning now contemplates buying an RFA. Johansen that is now 25, is in search of big money, and Vancouver jumps at him, and Columbus does not match. Johansen signs an 7 year contract for huge money.......Horvat and McCann make Vancouver's centers the best 1, 2, 3 and Cassels wins the Selke............the Canucks are back and win the Stanley cup in 2017-2018.

Put the crack pipe down and quickly back away from it.

The prospects Benning drafts in 15 and16 drafts will take cpl years in the minors and 3 + years in the NHL before making an impact.

For example Cole Cassels drafted 2 years ago will be in Utica for 2 years before even making the NHL and then take another 3+ years to become an impact player and that's if everything works out. Horvat played one year in the minors and was on the 4th line last year. He'll play 3rd line next year and hopefully 2nd in 2 years from now. This team is still about to go into full rebuild mode.

Remember most of these prospects will never play an NHL game. Horvat is the only draft pick we have on the team from last 10 years of drafting. Edler and Hansen from 2004 are next. There are around 5 others who made the NHL but got traded. Besides Schneider no real stars were picked.

IF everything goes well and we get very lucky with some of our picks then there is a chance we become competitive in 5 years form now and challenge for a Cup couple of years after that. The hope is to draft well, get 2 or 3 top 5 picks and hope they turn out to be stars. Make some astute trades and top it all off with a UFA or two to put us over the top.

I Canucks can not rebuild and win the Stanley Cup in 3 years from today. Calgary is ahead of us in their rebuild and one can't reasonably say they will compete for the SC in 2 years.

Remember how long Black Hawks sucked for before their rebuild was complete. Keith and Seabrooke were drafted in 02/03. They won a cup in 2010 and that's with great mgmt, coaching and luck with Kane and Toews being available when they picked 1st and 3rd overall.

WHL rocks

Good post and very fair comments.......but don't take every word for it's value.......I understand that not every prospect turns out and I understand most prospects take time

Saying all that........

This is why I have championed the rebuild rather than the retool............the Canucks have started it, and we have had multiple first round drafts, we are ahead of the curve, but we will have to trade our vets to hasten the process, or it will take 10 years, if we are lucky!

Personally, I would trade Hamhuis and Lack this year to Edmonton, and Edler, Vrbata too...fill in with lesser UFA's and those prospects that can't be waived, and that would really speed the process up....but that is not going to happen, so this is my alternative plan.....dream! LOL

I fully agree about the rebuild and how to do it. I'm in favor of doing it via the draft. That's how I would do it. Get top 5 picks for cpl years, but I would develop players properly by leaving them in the minors until they are over ripe, ala Detroit Red Wings and supplement the team trades and UFA signings.

I'm just saying that you are overly optimistic with your timetable. This is a 5+ year rebuild and then cpl years more to challenge for Cup if all goes according to plan. You won't even be in the playoffs in 2017 if Benning decides to go this route.

I like the OP post, my thinking is along the same lines. 2016 could be a major year of change, and that summer we have tons of cap. If Benning gets value for our top guys, we could see a slew of impact type prospects. Usually though its at least 5 years by the time the young fellas are ready to step up their game in the playoffs, and by that time sadly we may not have the sedins :(

I am not an advocate for stripping the team.

But next year we have, if you could coin it such a thing, a pretty good opportunity.

Two thirds through the year we will have had an opportunity to have blooded Baertschi, Gaunce, Corrado, Clendenning, given a few games to Shinkaruk, further established Ronnie Kenins & Kassian would have been given another crack at a bigger role. Horvat should fully be on his way! In a perfect world, Jake Virtanen as well. I would not go in to this next season having traded Hamhuis, Bieksa and Vrbata. But all three are free agents, unrestricted, next summer. And those young guys could make an admirable crack at replacing them as the season carries on. The trade deadline is another matter?

Trading Bieksa, Hamhuis & Vrbata should net at LEAST 2, if not as many as four, first round picks or young player equivalents.

While we have young players groomed to at least take a position in their roles.

And we would also have as much as $13 to $17 mill in cap space.

Hello Brent Seabrook and Steven Stamkos! Plus a boatload of good young players and picks.

Stamkos may not be realistic, but you get the idea. Backes, lol Kesler...

If there was a time to pull a quick rebuild; next year at the deadline is it!

Just to nit pick: Horvat did not play a full year in the minors.

You seem quite confident that there is a Cup in the Sabres future. What is wrong with Canucks fans believing it as well?

My 2 favourite teams are the Sabres and the Canucks. If it were up to me, they'd soon play against each other for the cup. Realistically though neither team has a chance at contending in the next 3 years.

No offense but it seems like you are deflecting. You didn't really address the point of my post.

Oh, I thought I did answer it.

Basically what I'm saying is that there's nothing wrong with either fan base thinking that the teams are going to win the Cup sooner rather than later. It's just unrealistic though.
