Oh for sure, it's just that while it's not truly special as I'm Canadian, I would love another Miracle on Ice if the Russians get stacked.

I encourage anyone who can afford it to get a membership at The Athletic. They're doing good work over there - well beyond what most of the hacks at the local papers have been regurgitating. ...For example: Quote Q&A: Northeastern coach Jim Madigan talks Canucks prospect Adam Gaudette Mike Halford Two years ago, Adam Gaudette was a blip on Vancouver’s prospect radar. And not much of a blip, to be honest. An unheralded 18-year-old centre that put up modest production for Cedar Rapids of the USHL, Gaudette was taken in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft – 149th overall – a selection that, despite being so late in the process, played to underwhelming reviews. Yet in the time following his selection, no Canucks prospect climbed the organizational ladder with more speed. Gaudette’s quickly become one of the club’s most intriguing young players. This past spring, TSN’s Craig Button said the Canucks got a “gem” in Gaudette, while NHL on NBC analyst Pierre McGuire tabbed the 20-year-old as possibly the steal of the draft. All this came in the midst of Gaudette’s terrific sophomore campaign at Northeastern, in which he tied for the NCAA lead in power-play goals, with 16, and finished tied for ninth in the country in scoring, with 52 points in 37 games. Last week, The Athletic caught up with Huskies bench boss Jim Madigan to speak about the upcoming campaign, which NHLer Gaudette projects to play like and, the big question for Canucks fans – when will he turn pro? Mike Halford: When you recruited Gaudette and you took a look at him, did you guys ever envision he’d go from a fifth-round pick to the place where he is now – perhaps the steal of that draft? Jim Madigan: We saw some inkling of his progress towards the end of his grade 11 year, when he played with Tony Amonte [at Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA]. Some of those attributes were there. And we saw more of it when he went to the United States Hockey League, and he played really well there. Although he was a third-line player, he was playing on a very good team and you could see his game starting to come together. He was getting stronger, he was more productive against really good competition. And then when he made the U.S. team for the World Junior A challenge – they won the whole thing – then you really saw the inklings of it. (Note: The American team Madigan referenced included, among others, prized Canucks prospect Brock Boeser, who finished the tourney with four goals and five points in four games.) MH: Was there one particular thing that stood out that made you guys say, ‘We’ve got something special here’? Madigan: He’s a dog on a bone. He wants the puck, he hunts pucks down, he’s got great tenacity and he wants the puck on his stick. There are a lot of players on all levels that don’t want the puck in critical situations. He wants the puck a lot. He wants to make the plays, he wants to score. So what drew us to him from a recruiting perspective is the ways he hunts pucks down, and how much he demanded the puck. He’s a kid that, even though he was a freshman here and playing against kids three to four years older, he still wanted the puck. He wasn’t taking a back seat, he wasn’t changing his game. So that makes you go, ‘Ooh, this is a special kid, he wants to make plays.’ MH: You’ve done a lot of scouting in addition to coaching, spending time with the Pens and Islanders. Is there an NHLer you see some similarities to? Madigan: For me, when you project him to the National Hockey League, he could play [on lines] one through four. Coming in, as a rookie, he could be an effective third- or fourth-line guy, bide his time a little bit, and then move up to a top-six forward role. His skill set is so diverse that he can go one-through-four, whereas a lot of guys their skill sets only allow them to play on the top two lines, or bottom two lines. He’s got the ability to do both. Mike Richards is [a comparable] that comes to mind for me. He was also a dog on a bone, wanted the pucks, was a gritty guy that played both ends of the rink. So that’s a good comparison. Adam’s a good skater, but there are guys that skate faster than him. His tenacity allows him to get there. Mike Richards was a good skater, but he wasn’t a high-end skater. But his competitiveness, his drive and his determination allowed him to get there. Adam has all those characteristics. There are definitely some similarities in their games. MH: You mentioned Gaudette can fill a number of different roles – what will his role be at Northeastern this year, especially with the departure of [last year’s NCAA leading scorer] Zach Aston-Reese? Madigan: It’s a really big season for him. He continues to challenge himself and his expectations are high. Yes, we lost Aston-Reese – who was a hell of a player for us both on the ice and off the ice – but Adam Gaudette, last year, had 52 points. He was the ninth-leading scorer in the country. So there wasn’t really that much of a differential [points-wise] between Aston-Reese and Gaudette. I expect Gaudette to go out there and have another great year, and not just statistically – I mean as more of a 200-foot player. He’ll be a guy that’s as strong in his own zone as he is the offensive zone. A guy that will be our go-to guy. I expect Adam to help lead our team offensively, but to also grow and round out his game. He can get a lot better on his draws, and he knows it. We’ve chatted with him about that, so that we have better puck possession coming off his faceoffs. He’s going to get us points. I don’t need to say ‘put a number on how many points you’re going to get.’ They’re going to come to him – in fact, I told him don’t worry about the points, because he’ll get his points. It’s about making sure other parts of your game continue to improve and get better. He’s continued to do that from year one to two, and I expect him to keep flourishing this year. MH: What’s the relationship like between you and the Canucks? How does that dynamic work out? Madigan: The Canucks organization is great to deal with. [General manager] Jim Benning’s nephew just played here [Matt Benning, now with Edmonton]. I knew Jim when he was in Boston with the Bruins, and I got to know him a lot better when Matt was here. [Scouting director] Judd Brackett is from this area and actually attended Northeastern for a year, and Judd and I are really good friends. We have homes down in [Cape Cod] together. I see Judd an awful lot during the year. They do a really good job of calling us, seeing where Gaudette is at, what his strengths and weaknesses are, and they reinforce the message that we’re giving to Adam. We’re all on the same page regarding his development. I think it’s important that there are no mixed messages. They’re awesome to deal with. The Canucks are careful. Adam projects to be a certain type of player in the National Hockey League. But sometimes, in college – and this isn’t the case with us – sometimes the way [the school] wants him to play might be different than the way [the NHL club] wants him to play. We both see Adam the same way right now, and we see him for what he projects to be down the road. [The Canucks] always reinforce my message of how we want him to play, and that aligns with how they want him to play. We’re pretty consistent with how Adam plays now, and what he needs to get better at coming out of development camp: The 200-foot game, little more detail in the defensive zone, getting better at faceoffs, getting stronger physically – which he has done. There’s constant communication going back and forth. MH: Is there a story you have, or anecdote, that sort of embodies what Gaudette’s about? Madigan: We’re talking about a highly confident kid. [Laughs]. Confident and maybe cocky a little bit, but you need to have a little swagger, and I’m okay with that. He’s certainly not arrogant. When you get to arrogant, then you’ve crossed the line. So we’re playing at Fenway Park last year against the University of New Hampshire, and he scores the first goal of the game. We’re at Fenway Park, right? Nostalgic building. He scores a goal, and he’s celebrating – and what does he do? He's taking his stick out and swinging it like a baseball bat. Like he just hit a home run. That’s him. He enjoys scoring goals. He likes to score goals, and we like the fact that he likes to score goals. Not enough kids want to score goals. Not enough kids want the puck around the net. MH: He’s intriguing for a lot of people in Vancouver, because his stock just continues to rise. It just kind of keeps going up and up. Madigan: He’s going to play [in the NHL]. I’ve had [Ducks defenceman Josh] Manson who left here after his third year, I’ve had Benning who left after his third year, Aston-Reese stayed all four years and he’s going to play [with Pittsburgh]. Adam’s in the same mold of those three. He’s going to play. MH: Do you figure he’ll play all four years at Northeastern? Madigan: [Laughs] Hey, I’m pushing for four, and they’re pushing for three, right? They’ll get a kick out of that one. If you tell them ‘Madigan thinks he’ll be ready in the fourth year,' they’ll look at you and go ‘No, he’ll be ready next year.’ [Laughs]

Tystick
He's got a surprisingly strong and firm mindset. He obviously trains exceptionally well, starting from a "who's that?" 5th round pick selection, to one of our top prospects. I don't think this guy has a ceiling. He could become one of the best two-way players in the NHL, IMO. Edited September 28, 2017 by Tystick error

I understand what you are saying but let's not take this out on the athletes that are working hard. We should be targeting our anger at the owners... Id honestly rather see more competitive games. I don't care if we have the best players in the world, 9-0 blowouts aren't fun.
