Single most important Canuck in 2015/2016

Listen, Im just hoping Higgins is gone.

I second that. Out of everything I want done. I want Higgins gone the most.

His defensive skills might be needed though. Hopefully some youth can match his skills in camp. (If he makes it there. I think the writing was on the wall for him last year.)

Most important player is Jacob Markstrom. If he doesn't show eliteness or at the very least, decent NHL skill, we'll be stuck with an aging goalie and a 6'5 flop in net, with really no one to transition to Demko.

If he does play like an elite goaltender this season, especially on a lower-than-average skill team (not bad per se, just lower than average) in a Schneider-esque sort of way, I see Stanley Cups in this team's future.

If Virtanen can make the team and score, he and Horvat get a shared vote from me. Two players on entry level contracts getting top 9 minutes would be excellent. Look at championship teams and how well they have managed to get young players integrated into their line ups. In the salary cap era, a key player or two on an ELC can make a huge difference.

Im going to have to give it to Horvat.

He was excellent in his rookie season and if he shows significant improvement this year the Canucks will know they have someone to build around. He is important today and very important tomorrow.

I have Baertschi coming in a close second. The team needs young offensive players to establish themselves at the NHL level and Sven is our best bet right now. I am hoping he gets a lot of minutes with experienced players and probably PP time as well.

Miller is the most important player for the Canucks next year. He's gotta be the Ryan miller from 2010 where he was vezina candidate and steal some games for the Canucks next year if we fail to get chances on our opponents. Miller time. Go Canucks go!!!

Problem is he won't be. Just like asking Lou to be the player he was the first year he was here.

Jim Benning. Vets have to go for youth, it's time.

This. Benning.

At some point the Canucks are going to have to fully commit to a re-build and I hope it starts this year. The Trade deadline could be a great opportunity to move veterans and pick up some picks and prospects. No more half measures and trying to win while getting younger. Those are incompatible goals and wishful thinking in my mind.

At this point it looks like more misses that hits for Benning. The Vey trade was a waste of a 2nd round pick. The Miller signing was too much money for too long a term and now has cost us our best goalie, Lack. Terrible result. We have a few good forward prospects but a real shortage of defencemen.

It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Miller, Markstrom and our defence. A good defence can cover for a mediocre goalie. The real gamble is will Markstrom finally show all that potential? If Miller goes down with injury, we'll have Canatta as a backup.

Here's hoping Markstrom turns into Ben Bishop. On the plus side if our goaltending falls apart, we'll finally get a top 5 pick.

Dougie Hamilton.

Oh wait.....

I don't like the question - "single most important" - what does that mean?

Important in what sense? Points? GAA? Salary Cap? How much they donate to Canuck Place?

The only way this team goes any where is if they play well as a collective.

As far as who has pressure, I'd say Markstrom as he needs to prove that he can play in the NHL.

I think it's almost a given that the defense will struggle next season. Bieksa is in a contract year, but after what happened with this botched trade deal, you can bet he's not happy with the management. They have to move him. That means more minutes for everyone else, and considering how much harder the other divisional teams will be to play against next season (McLellan will get better results than Eakins, and the Flames have added Hamilton to their arsenal) it doesn't look good for the team at the moment.

For me, it will always be the goalie(s). If Miller sucks and Markstrom falters, we will be near the bottom of the standings.

For the record, I don't think Calgary will be as great as we think they will be. They will be good and compete for the playoffs spot but I don't think they have reached the contender status.

Edmonton surely will be better. Having a capable coach alone will make them better not to mention McDavid. Their defence is still a suspect but I think McLellan will find a way to have the forwards buy in to playing defence by committee or team defence. They will contend for a playoff spot.

I actually think it's Edler. He's really going to have to play like a number 1 defenseman. A lot of weight on his shoulder. Hoping he can return to a near 50 pt campaign. He's got the talent, his confidence is back and hopefully he can improve upon his improved self.
