JB "clearing up cap space" for next years free agency

@botchford:

Benning says team is clearing out cap space for next summer to get into the high end free agent market (if there is one)

JB and Linden have hinted quite a bit in the past week about clearing up space, next years draft, next years free agency...hint hint: *next year*

If you think about it, makes sense. All the contracts ending after this upcoming season opens up $20m+ of capspace. Possibly indicating he'll flip Vrbata and Hamhuis at the deadline for picks/assets which again, both have talked highly and plenty of replenishing more picks for the draft. Trade Hammer and Vrbata at the deadline for 1st round picks+ and there we go heading into the 2016 draft with 3 1sts and 2 2nds. Makes too much sense really and not hard to add 1 and 1.

The entire Pacific has significantly got better and yea management says we want to transition to youth and be competitive but realistically, our compete won't be able to withstand the powers of the pacific and central and we're likely looking at a top 10 pick at the least. Pretty much hopeless this season but when it ends, have an incredible draft and with the cap space, can make the team competitive and do a quick 180 getting free assets come free agency.

Lucic, Seabrook, Demers, Eriksson, Brouwer, Sutter, McGinn, Russell or a number of possible guys that could be brought in to replace the likes of Hamhuis/Vrbata being younger than them. All the players listed will be 30 or younger next July 1 and are realsitic guys to bring in. Then maybe trade Hansen/Higgins, make room for youth to come in fulltime like Virtanen/Grenier/etc and there you have it. Competitive team, out with the old core in with the new. Free agency gives a fresh new supporting cast and youth core develops with them. And not to mention again, a huge draft loaded with picks stocking up the prospect cupboard even more.

2016/17 will be the Benning show, just watch.

^This. Especially how JB hype the 2016 draft. For all those who are confused, this is JB's 'secret' plan.

He could even flip Prust and Higgins to get more picks at the deadline.

The Kass trade is JB hedging the risk of Kass becoming worse due to his back so that he could flip Prust for a third or fourth rounder that Kass may never get at deadline. If that is the plan than JB knows what he is doing. IF not then he just went full retard on the Kassian trade.

It's not even secret. Many of us here see it, and even one of the reporters asking him questions sees it. Even Blotch gets it!

If only all the panickers would take a deep breath, step back, and survey the situation objectively. Of course Benning has a plan, and it's only in phase two. One year from now, let's evaluate -- things are going to be FAR different from what they are now.

Patience -- can we wait but one year, and watch it all play out in the meantime? Let's enjoy the ride... UP!

Looks like a really good crop of UFAs regardless of who resigns and who doesn't

here are the RFA's

There's some real gold in there, Jerry. If it looks like we have a shot at a Seabrook or such, we could even look at moving Edler, who would definitely bring back a decent return. Who knows what can happen at the deadline...

Yea must have been why he traded away Kassian after he scores 20+ goals this next season paying him more than 2million will mess up the free agency next year.

Kassian isn't a player you trade away at the deadline for immediate help, Prust is. Plus teams tend to overpay at the deadline. Its a common sense move.

imho Kassian isnt really a canuck, Prust is.

Kassian cant do anything on the boards and fumbles the puck trying to get the puck out of his end and always gets hemmed into his own zone and leading to alot of goals statisticly.... trust me prust wont be doing that.

Prust - Friesen - Dorsett line will do just fine so shush and dont whine

If Prust commands more than the 5th our neanderthal GM inexplicably threw in as a sweetener, I'll be gobsmacked. It's much more likely that Prust is injured or in the minors by that point.

Point is, the trade was boneheaded regardless of how Benning apologists try to spin it.

All of this is true. Just don't be expecting Mother Goose to come riding in with her magic wand and make it all better for you. Sorry.

All the 1 year contracts and contracts expiring next year give the Canucks 1 thing, the flexibility to make big changes. All those guys, as every NHL player with an expiring contract knows, are on notice to perform or something may happen that they don't like. Everyone will be reviewed and if they don't buy in to all things Canuck and perform up to standard, they will be cut loose. Some will be re-signed. It is very possible that they have very much more cap space available than they had this year.

The other thing is that there will be more prospects ready to make the jump to the big club next year than this year so there will have to be room available.

As time goes the results of Bennings work will become more clear. He started out with a dogs dinner, he'll finish with a good team.

ps. I don't think the Sedins are going anywhere quickly
