Both Russia and the United States are scheduled to test new tactical nuclear missiles this month.

According to the Russian state-owned Tass, Moscow is currently preparing to test its Iskander tactical missile systems.

“Servicemen of a missile unit of the Southern Military District deployed in the Krasnodar Territory began preparations for drills and live-firing of tactical Iskander-M missile systems that will start in late July at the Kapustin Yar range in the Astrakhan Region," Tass quoted the unit’s press service as saying.

Earlier this year, a Russian defense industry official said that Moscow would complete all certification tests for the missile by the end of this year. “We hope to be through with government certification tests by the end of 2015. But, as you understand, anything can happen," the industry official said.

The Iskander-M missile system is a road-mobile tactical nuclear-capable missile with a range between 50 and 500 kilometers. It is Russia’s successor to the Scud missile system.

The Iskander has a number of advantages over the Scud system. According to Global Security, a defense website:

Russia has repeatedly said it plans to deploy the Iskander system to its westernmost Kaliningrad region, which borders on NATO members like Poland and the Baltic states. Western officials have criticized this move, including Gen. Philip Breedlove, NATO’s Supreme Commander, who described it as part of a “pattern of continuing behavior to coerce its [Russia’s] neighbors in Central and Eastern Europe.”

The launch carrier vehicle carries two missiles, rather than one. And each missile can be independently targeted, in a matter of seconds. The missiles can be retargeted during flight not only against fixed targets, but also against moving targets, such as a tactical missile launcher, a tank column, or a convoy. The Iskander has another unique feature: the optically guided warhead can also be controlled by a coded radio signal, including from an AWACS or an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This provides a self-homing capability. The missile's onboard computer receives an image or images of the target. Then the missile, by locking on the target with its sights, will travel towards it at supersonic speed.

The United States has hardly remained passive in the face of Russia’s modernization. Indeed, earlier this month, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) conducted the first developmental flight test of their jointly-produced B61-12 gravity bomb.

Russia is concerned that US' recent nuclear bomb test may be carried out to examine the possibility of using the B61-12 nuclear bomb with NATO fighter-bombers stationed in Europe.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On July 1, the US National Nuclear Security Administration and the US Air Force conducted a flight test of an inactive B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb in Nevada.

The United States' recent nuclear bomb test is a provocation, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said Monday.

"The actions of the US side in the current situation are openly provocative, and are contrary to Washington's stated desire for complete nuclear disarmament," Antonov told reporters.

"In particular, the test was carried out using a F-15E fighter-bomber. This leads to believe that the test was carried out in order to examine the possibility of using the B61-12 nuclear bomb with NATO fighter-bombers stationed in Europe," the deputy minister said.

Head of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation David Krieger told Sputnik on Sunday that the very fact that the United States had conducted a bomb test signified that the country disregarded the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weaponry.

The United States uses tales about the imaginary "Russian threat" to increase NATO’s military potential near Russian borders and to justify upgrading of its nuclear arsenal, Anatoly Antonov said.

"They [the tests] confirmed the US intention to maintain deployed nuclear weapons in Europe that can reach Russian territory, and to maximize their combat effectiveness. We see this as an evidence of a persistent reluctance of the United States to reconsider the participation of non-nuclear NATO members in the joint nuclear missions that are in direct conflict with the obligations taken under the NPT [the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons]."

"Under the guise of the infamous and fictitious threat from the Russian side, the United States are not only building up its military capacity and the presence of NATO near the western borders of the Russian Federation, but also are modernizing its nuclear arsenal," Antonov added.

Meanwhile, criticism from MIT nuclear weapons prof. who (duh) believes that nuclear wars cannot be won and we should probably stop developing new nuclear weapons.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Air Force and the National Nuclear Security Administration have successfully completed the first development flight test of a B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb with no warhead in Nevada.

“The military capabilities of this weapon stem from a totally fictitious and bizarre idea that the United States can fight and win nuclear wars,” Postol said on Friday.

Postol, 69, is one of the leading US experts on ballistic missile defense technologies and ballistic missiles.

“This weapon could never be used in a real-world situation against any nuclear-armed state, as it would likely provoke an uncontrolled nuclear escalation,” he said.

The projected $11 billion upgrade program for the B61 has been described as the most expensive nuclear warhead refurbishment in history. However, the upgraded B61-12 is designed to have far greater accuracy and generate less radioactive fallout than earlier versions of the bomb.

Nevertheless, Postol charged that the new moves to modernize and upgrade the gravity bomb were likely to backfire on US policymakers with unintended consequences.

“This is yet another example of how the US nuclear modernization program continues to undermine the security of the United States and its allies,” the scientist said.

He warned that even “against states not armed with nuclear weapons, its use could have global political consequences with very far ranging and unpredictable results.”

Far from advancing US strategic security, Postol argued, developing the B61 was likely to undermine it by alarming Russia and China, and provoke them to respond by developing new strategic weapons of their own.

“It is the wrong signal to send to countries like Russia, which is already on edge over continuous advances in US nuclear strike capabilities, and to China, which is trying in spite of constant provocation to maintain a sensible posture of minimum deterrence,” Postol continued.

Pushing ahead with gravity bomb development also threatened to undermine already fragile prospects for arms control and for preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, Postol warned.

“It is the wrong message to send to the non-weapon state signatories of the Nonproliferation Treaty,” he stated.

Postol suggested that the Obama administration did not appear to have thought through the potential diplomatic and strategic consequences of modernizing the gravity bomb weapon.“It is hard to understand what the Obama White House thinks it is accomplishing by pushing such a counterproductive program,” he concluded.

Before joining MIT, Postol worked as an analyst at the US Office of Technology Assessment and as a science and policy adviser to the Chief of Naval Operations, the operational head of the US Navy.

In 2001, Postol received the Norbert Wiener Prize from Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility for uncovering numerous false claims about missile defenses.

But what does this REALLY all mean?

Just a few example contracts from what is sure to come with the 'tensions' between the US and their newly-appointed greatest risk to national security, http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/07/11/joint-chiefs-nominee-sides-with-romney-brands-russia-greatest-threat-to-us/ their old pal Russia:

And that's just a trickle in the endless defense spending moneypit.

If you stoke up enough fear in the public you can justify anything. Since the North Korea has armed up and been forgotten about, and Iran's nuclear threat is all but fizzled out http://america.aljazeera.com/opinions/2015/5/irans-nuclear-threat-is-a-myth.html, the US is running out of bad guys. Enter Russia. Yes, their old red friends are back, creating all sorts of reasons for heightened security. http://www.forbes.com/sites/lorenthompson/2015/03/20/the-u-s-has-no-defense-against-a-russian-nuclear-attack-really/

What's interesting about this line the US is taking now is that Donald Trump has taken over the lead in GOP polls. http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/07/09/poll-donald-trump-leads-the-pack-as-gop-frontrunner/ As much money as these greedy megalomaniacs in charge of the real power down there want to make, do they REALLY want this man in charge?

What, is he going to fire us all off the Earth?

The cold war ended the day globalization took a foothold in the world. This bickering will happen and proxy conflicts like the Ukraine will happen, but the world as we know it is now entirely dependent on the interdependence of the great powers. I wouldn't fret about the bombs going off.

Putin is a dick.

Looks like someone was fed his daily western propaganda dinner..

Putin is doing exactly what the U.S. has done in the past/still does..

Both are waging proxy wars, both have annexed territories (Crimea for Russia and Hawaii for the U.S.), and both are testing nuclear weapons.

I doubt either will drop the first bomb..

The first bomb will be dropped in the future by some rogue country in the Middle East (Israel) OR one of India, Pakistan, and China

not a chance, the U.S is currently afraid of them right now, in fact Nato is doing absolutley nothing, as Russia is having their way with Ukraine.

It's a bit of a tit for tat scenario right now..

The USA seems like gaining ground in Syria with some of the rebel groups, where's Putin is in a stalemate in Ukraine.

Because no one cares about Ukraine, it is of no importance to anyone. We will tsk tsk at Putin but no one will lift a finger.

You know why NATO is in no rush to admit the Ukraine?

Ukraine was in line to be admitted into NATO. They applied in 2008 and they elected a new Gov just before admittance in 2010 and the new Gov decided to cancel their application stating "they decided to exclude NATO membership from their national security strategy". It was fairly small news at the time but makes a huge difference now as NATO is severely limited in what they can do to help Ukraine. If they had joined NATO when they had the chance this war wouldnt have started at all. Russia saw weakness and took advantage. That is all.

Nobody seems to realize Russia is in the middle of a huge financial crisis and can scarcely afford to be upgrading their weapons systems. Capital outflow, ruble devaluation, a shrinking economy. Many Russian companies decided to borrow money from outside of Russia during the 2000s and now they have to pay it back in US dollars and Euros when their income is in Rubles that are worth half of what they were in 2013. The interest on those foreign debts alone is a killer. They dont need external problems. They have plenty at home.

That western propaganda dinner is a big seller.
