[signing] Oduya to Stars

Recommended Posts

Still, their back end is very underwhelming. They have a ton of firepower up front though...

^^

They may have great offensive weapons but defensively they are still extremely weak there. This signing lessens the blow losing Daley. But that backend seriously needs more retooling before its consider a contending team.

Um no he just didn't want to play with a crapty buffalo team. 7.5 is the entire contract not the average per year..

Can't blame him on that count. I'm guessing that you're not fan of reading whole threads, two people have already pointed out that the contract is 2 years at 3.75M each.

That's kind of a weird one, usually guys in his position go for more of a payday(longer term). Maybe he's good buddies with Sharp.

I'm with Peaches' opinion now. The Sabres are a bottom 5 team, and he most likely would prefer to be on a possible contender.

I have respect for somebody who takes 7 figures less in order to have a chance at being a winner.

Good for the Stars

Honestly...I cannot envision a point in time where the canucks will be contending for the playoffs in the west with how the arms races have gone in our division and conference

This kind of drama sure is pop on these boards.

I mean, every time a western conference team adds anything you'd think they'd just gained some kind of decisive advantage relative to the Canucks.

I'm wondering what it is about Oduya that makes him part of the so-called "arms race"?

Is it his 10 points last season? 0.39 pp 60?

Was it his team worst underlying numbers? (-10.1 relative corsi, 51.3% offensive zone starts). In his "defense", he faces some strong quality of competition, but let's not get carried away.

Was it the 44 giveaways (-22). Again, no big deal - my point here is not to claim that Oduya is not a good NHL defenseman - he's a decent, 33 year old, undersized shutdown guy, who just cost the Stars a fair chunk of cap.

But is this the kind of addition that buries the Canucks in hopelessness to compete though?

I think people are repeating a perenial anxiety that blows thngs like this out of proportion.

Would make interesting sig material though - a bold and dramatic statement that you could look back upon to see how prophetic it tuns out to be.

And those are Oduya's numbers playing with a VERY good defensive partner in Niklas Hjarlmarsson...who ever Oduya is paired with, I can guarantee that player wont be as good of a partner as Hammer was.

Thats not to discredit Oduya, he is a solid defenseman...but part of what made Oduya effective was having Hjarlmarsson paired up with him.

And when they're still playing at 37/38, how will those contracts look? If they're banking on the cap going up so that it won't matter so much then they haven't learned anything from the lockout. Perhaps they're hoping Kesler will spend more time on IR than playing?

Both have NMCs, and Bieksa's kicks in after he's turned 35 (like the Pronger contract, it's not when it was signed it's when it takes effect). They're both physical players who've dealt with numerous injuries and that'll take a toll on their career longevity. They might seem ok now but this will look worse in a few years.

Anaheim is going all in.

And Kesler, Bieksa as well, are playing them for all its worth. Just like Lou, their mentor, did to us prior to 2010 /2011...

Their cap still looks in good control, in spite of Ryan Keslers contract. Lets see what it looks like in 12 months?
