Time Capsule - Prediction thread for 2015-16 season

I think our division will shape up like this..

Ducks

Kings

Flames

Canucks

We give the Ducks a run for their money but they ultimately beat us in 6 games. Same if we end up facing the winner of the Central division. If we manage to play the flames or the sharks we win. If it's the kings we lose.

Collectively, our offense improves -- defense is exposed as our weak link

Hutton finds himself on PP1 with Edler

Horvat has a 40 point year and cements himself as 2c, Baertschi similar point production

Sedins 65pts/piece

Vrbata traded for a late first

Hamhuis traded for a 1st

Markstrom finishes with a 16-13-3 record, 9.20 SV% 2.4GAA

Virtanen stays after 9 games, McCann sent down. --> both play for Canada at the WJC

Totally random and I don't really care if I am wrong list.

Canucks just squeak into playoffs. Lose in the first round to L.A.

Calgary misses playoffs

Edm gains 15 pts on last year. Wins draft lottery.

Cup is won by a team I hate (because they aren't named Canucks).

Toronto misses playoffs - major lulz

Bo is recognized as clear #2 centre by New Year

No one on Canucks score over 70 pts.

Hamhuis traded on deadline day.

Vrbata traded a week before deadline.

Sbisa does at least one good hockey play by Christmas.

McCaan goes back to junior, Virtanen stays up.

Benning says 'like' to break up a sentence.

Garrett releases a KD cookbook.

And I cheer my bloody face off for the :canucks: every damn game!!!!!!!! :towel:

The Canucks narrowly miss the playoffs.

The Pacific division is weak this year, both WC teams will be from the Central.

Baertschi and Horvat lead the youth charge, and the kids impress.

Markstrom finally comes around.

Miller looks average.

Vrbata and Hamhuis both gone at the trade deadline.

The Sedin's regress to 60 points.

The defense still looks bad.

Hutton looks good, but not good enough to hold down a spot.

Kassian is waived by MTL, demoted.

Calgary wins the pacific.

Montreal, Ottawa, and Winnipeg all make the playoffs.

Edmonton and Toronto STILL suck.

Arizona gets Matthews.

Chicago gets bounced in round 1 after a disappointing year.

Canucks get 10th overall pick.

Benning makes more ballsy moves, trades Burrows at the draft.

Still cheer all the way for the boys!

Looks like I was way off, except for Bo of course

With our core getting up in age we will start to see injuries creep into our lineup.

This will turn out to be a blessing in disguise as our youth in Utica step up and make a huge impact.

As Meat Loaf would say 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Oddly enough I thought the goalie controversy would be a lock considering it happens practically every season in Vancouver.

Wasn't far off really. If it wasn't for millers injury and the 50/50 play at the end it might have gotten louder

Tragoedia's Official Season Predictions

1. Standings look something like this in the West.

  1. Anaheim
  2. Calgary
  3. Vancouver
  4. Nashville
  5. Winnipeg
  6. Chicago
  7. Minnesota
  8. St. Louis
  9. LA
  10. Dallas
  11. Edmonton
  12. Colorado
  13. San Jose
  14. Arizona

2. The Season will something like this for the Western Conference

Vancouver will make the playoffs simply by playing in a weak division. The Central will dominate again, but our division will struggle. LA will struggle to again regain chemistry and the team will start to meltdown. Calgary will regress from last year but still finish ahead of us. Anaheim will feast on easy points and contend for the Presidents trophy because of it. Edmonton will make some real improvements but still finish outside of the playoffs, but they will feel good knowing that they almost made it if they had only about 5-12 more points. San Jose will drop like a rock in a lake and the team will need to be blown up. Arizona hasn't finished their tire fire yet and will spend another season at the bottom praying for a top draft pick, which they will get.

In the Central, Nashville will again be a great regular season team and contend for the Presidents trophy. They will have some really unbeatable stretches and some quite average stretches, but it will be enough to get one of the top spots in the Central. Winnipeg will become a dominate force and will become a team that bullies other teams around, charging their way to second or third in their division. Chicago will play like a very average team in the regular season, with post-season fatigue slowing them down, but they will still make the playoffs much like how the Red Wings always seem to. Minnesota will have some really bad stretches, but will also go on some goalie driven runs that will be enough to make the playoffs. St. Louis will have an up and down year, but it will be enough to make the playoffs in a wild card spot. Dallas will find themselves again in the unenviable position of barely looking in to the playoffs, being a few points shy. Colorado will have another season struggling with being mediocre in a cut throat division.

3. The Trade Deadline

At the trade deadline, Benning will see that our postseason chances our miniscule and that we could barely make it past the first round, if that. For that, he unloads one or a few high profile vets, such as Vrbata, Higgins, or Hamhuis for some juicy picks. The Canucks rally around the empty roster spots and proceed to go on a mini run late in the season to make the playoffs, barely. They get lucky based on the weakness of the division.

4. The Youth

Horvat will continue to improve but start off the season slow and suffer some of the sophomore slump. But, during the season he will improve his play and become one of the go-to guys on the team at 20/21 years old, pushing over 40 points and slowly playing heavier and heavier defensive minutes. Kenins will improve a bit, becoming a more consistent energy player in the bottom six. Baertschi will show flashes of brilliance and will disappear for stretches, but will do enough to hold a roster spot heading into next season. He also scores 40+ points. Virtanen will get a nine game tryout, everyone will debate about whether he is ready but in the end he will be sent down. CDC will melt down for a couple weeks before settling down. Corrado and Clendening will do serviceable jobs on the bottom 4 pairings, but nothing flashy. Jensen will get another tryout but will again not do enough to justify a roster spot. Gaunce will also get a shot, and will show promise for the next year.

5. The Vets

The Sedins will have another strong season, again putting up 65-75 points and Burrows will ride shotgun once again for most of the year. Vrbata will again score 30+ goals and be one of the key reasons we win just enough games to get into the playoffs. Bonino will have an average offensive season, potting around 40-50 points, benefiting from Vrbata, who also helps Baertschi. Higgins will probably play a bottom six role and score probably around 30-35 points. Hansen will be similar, but probably will get around 25-30. Dorsett and Prust have a decent season and show nice bottom line chemistry. Vey will struggle to find a role in the lineup.

Edler-Tanev will form the backbone of our defense and will be the most consistent pairing we have. Everything will fall on them. Their offense will be lacking compared to many other top pairings, but they will play a strong two way game that we live or die by. Hamhuis and Sbisa will form another pairing that will be inconsistent, showing flashes of brilliance and other stretches of struggle. Sbisa will improve upon last season and start to be a more prominent defenseman, but still will be prone to error, much like Bieksa pre-2010. Weber, Bartowski, Clendening, and Corrado will rotate through the bottom 3 slots through injuries and healthy scratches. Weber will be our top PP guy for much of the season, but his defensive game will have him scratches for certain matchups.

Miller will play average from our perspective. He will hold together the team with his veteran presence, but will be criticized for not doing more. Still, he will be a vital piece for making the playoffs and will win a bunch of games the team had no business winning. Markstrom will play average for most of the season, with some good games and some forgettable games. In doing so he will show improvement heading into next season, where he will make even bigger strides towards becoming a solid starting netminder.

6. How the fans will feel

Vancouver fans will spend the entire season whining. They will complain about being not good enough and blame everyone in the organization, down to the janitor, and scream that they want everyone fired. When this does not happen they will cry themselves to sleep. When the season is over there will be a fire Benning movement, but management will stick the course and plow ahead into next season, where more young guys are put into the lineup and we select a few more awesome picks.

7. The Playoffs

We will be eliminated in the first round. Much sadness will be felt at another first round exit. Tampa will win the cup over Anaheim.

These are my honest predictions, but playing the crystal ball game is so difficult as random chance has such a large role to play. Either way, it will be interesting to see how many of my predictions come true.

Might update again before season starts, but as it stands this is my official prediction.

*EDIT* Will have to update with Bonino/ Clendening out and Sutter in. I will probably fix this closer to October.

I was very wrong. The only thing I got right was the bolded part.

Oh and Horvat did get 40+ points playing tough defensive minutes.

Overall standing 25th. Bad news

Top 5 pick . Good news

Benning learns you need goals to win not character. Good news

Benning continues getting fleeced on trades when vrbata and Hamhuis only fetch a third rounder each. Bad news

Pretty close.

Vrbata and Hamhuis will go for free so even worse.

I'll make some random ones...

Ryan Miller has a better season than Holtby

Linden Vey out produces Bo Horvat. 47 for linden and 44 for Bo

Vancouver will once again start to lu when the freight train Luca sbisa proves his contract worth

Luongo will carry the Panthers into the playoffs

LA will miss the playoffs

One sedin will score 90+ but somehow be robbed of Hart trophy nomination again

Mike smith scores a goal

Lucic will take 45 pims vs Vancouver

... May add more later!

LOL. We miss you Apollo.

That said, you got the LA part right, the Luongo part right, and almost got Bo's points right. Not so much on Vey's totals though.
