The Canadian Election - Liberals Win Majority

From the CBC:

Stephen Harper has begun the mid-summer marathon that will be longest federal election campaign in recent history.

Harper emerged from Rideau Hall Sunday morning, confirming he had asked Gov. Gen. David Johnston to dissolve Parliament for a general election to be held Monday, Oct. 19.

Speaking after his meeting with Johnston, Harper emphasized the need for a strong hand on the economy and issues of security, including the "violent global jihadist movement" represented by ISIS.

"Canadians will make a critical decision about the direction of our country, a decision with real consequences, a decision about who has the proven experience today to keep our economy strong and our country safe," Harper said.

"This is no time for risky plans that could harm our future," he added.

"It is time to stay the course and stick to our plan," Harper said.

Pressed by reporters why he launched the campaign so far in advance of the fixed election date, which boosts the cost to taxpayers, Harper said: "Everybody knows the election date and the campaigns of the other parties, as near as I can tell, have already begun."

"I feel very strongly...that those campaigns need to be conducted under the rules of the law. That the money come from the parties themselves, not from government resources, parliamentary resources or taxpayer resources."

"In terms of the advantages this party has, in terms of the fact that we're a better financed political party, a better organized political party, and better supported by Canadians — those advantages exist whether we call this campaign or not.

"What we do by calling this campaign is making sure that we are all operating within the rules and not using taxpayers' money directly."

After his visit to Rideau Hall, Harper headed to Montreal for a rally in the riding of Mount Royal, stopping on the way at a bakery in the Ottawa suburb of Orléans, where incumbent Conservative Royal Galipeau faces a challenge from high-profile Liberal candidate Andrew Leslie.

What a joke...

redrew boundaries to assists his party.

calling the longest election in modern history because it will help his party spend more, via legislation he put in.

will cost up to $150 million more to hold this election now.

And for the first time ever the world bodies due to irregularities last election in Harper won ridings will be watching and monitoring a canadian election.

what a piece of s***

You don't HAVE to vote on october 19th. But then, you also can't complain if you don't

Actually 2006 election had the same group, the Organization for Security and Economic Co-operation in Europe observing.

Also, it`ll probably cost closer to 300 million or more, as a 37 day election is expected to cost 375 million, and we`re in for a 78 day marathon.

Canada needs to awake up and just cut the purse strings to this arrogant steaming pile of....

INFORMED voters can end his reign.

While you guys obviously don't like the fact that the election has already been called. He really isn't wrong. Trudeau, Mulcair and Harper have all already started the election campaigns. Him calling it officially now really hasn't changed anything.

Let's call a spade a spade so to speak.

CPC are the ones who`ve been in borderline campaign mode since Trudeau became leader. It`s true they`ve all been playing the same game lately, but let`s not overlook that fact.

CPC is acting against the spirit of our electoral system and to its own advantage. They may be winning, what with the help of changed rules and Christmases in July, but Canadians are definitely losing.

As much hate as there is for Harper there isn't anyone who really stands out to replace him.

The recent victory of the NDP in Alberta gives me hope that Harper won't regain a majority government.

I'd like to see Harper in again, but definitely not with a majority gov't.

In a democratic society, no government should be a majority.

I've always wondered how the Chretien years would have been interpreted if the internet was more widespread. Just wondering how the narrative say on CDC would be.

I don't remember hearing as much anti-Chretien rhetoric either than the West being under represented.

When the centre-right was fractured into 2 and the Liberals cruised-controlled to majority government... people just seemed to accept that it's like how Parliamentary democracy worked.

Now when the centre-left are split 3-ways (Liberals, NDP and Greens), suddenly the Conservatives are authoritarian and people's democratic rights are being trampled.

I really don't want someone running the country who feels it's ok to forcefully strip away rights, freedoms and privacy with a self serving agenda that is being crammed down our throats as somehow in our "protection". The only protection we need is against him being in power another term, because his arrogance and disconnect is fearful.

He needs to go, now. And I'm hoping to be able to soon merge this with "These changes were long overdue".

Well in all honesty.

Endless action plan signs painted Conservative blue

The official jet carrying canada's PM painted conservative blue

Canadas government website changed to conservative blue

endless ads about this that or your rights being finished with a conservative blue logo

the C in Canada being digitally changed to look like the C from the Conservative party....

and of course every beneficial announcement about the most trivial thing being met with the speakers wearing the Conservative party logo against federal law

I'd say Harper has been in campaign mode quite a fair amount of time

In regards to what?

Experience?

Track record?

Don't understand because Harper had no experience and it bloody showed and we have suffered for it.

Nobody else stands out you say? I prefer to think of it as ANYONE would be a better choice at this stage because the other parties would have to actively work on trying to screw things up more than harper has

Be prepared for the onslaught of attack ads. Two plus months worth should be good enough to drive away enough voters for a Conservative majority win.

Actually they've already alienated their biggest power bases

Alberta was mocked as being Albertastan and major funding announcements were pulled back the second the NDP and Notley took power. Add that to Harpers arrogance of thinking shipping in Prentice would atuomatically win the election and of course Prentice sourcing Harper the the Cons in so many speeches. People in Alberta are pissed

Saskatchewan is ground zero for electoral subversion with Harper having attempted to add seats in a con vote rich area but was blocked when the lines were redrawn and more seats ended up in urban areas instead of rural meaning the educated voters who are most likely to not vote conservative have more of a chance of electing someone else. Then of course there is Brad Wall who is Harpers 2nd hand man is now leading a province failing and flagging as badly as Alberta who refuses to admit it who has sold off or privatized most of what remained in Sask hands highways remain in shoddy repair and hospitals remain closed despite his promises and now farmers are shafted due to the sale of the wheat board.

Newfoundland was promised the moon in a normally Con stronghold has lost all sorts of promised money and has watched the Cons demand they share more of what they bring in than any other province. Add that to the lies of the fishing issue and the euro trade agreement

Now southern ontario that crucial place that Harper spent 11 BILLION on saving jobs in the auto sector, they've watched ever more jobs and plants close and now have seen harper willingly give money to auto companies to build plants in other countries, most notably half a billion to VW to close it's plant outside of Kenora and rebuild it in mexico.

Factor in the now endless attack ads against trudeau and soon to be mulcair plus all the smiling bs about how great we are for the economy

and people will be leaving this clown in droves to vote for anyone else.
