CAROLINA HERALD

How Much Worse 'Cane" It Get?

By: Inanimate Carbon Rod

Anything is better than last year. Or so I thought. If you were a fan of the Hurricanes last season, I'm not going to apologize to you, that's ownerships job. They may feel like things are moving in the right direction, but this reporter is not buying into the hype. As soon as things started looking up, our new GM pulls the rug from underneath us.

Last season was tough, but let's go through the negatives quickly.

1. Five GMs!

Yeah, that's right. Five. JohnTavares. Apollo. DoughtysCheck. SwedeHockey. Monty. Let's not kid ourselves fans, this was probably the biggest problem. No clear vision for this team, at least from my perspective. But let's just say there was a clear vision from each one. With five different GMs, they are all going to have their own thoughts on what the team should look like. You hand someone the keys to the car, they are going to drive differently.

2. Devan Dubnyk

This team had huge problems last season, the biggest being that they traded Devan Dubnyk and ran with the tandem of Anton Khudobin and Martin Jones as their starters. Oops.

3. Defensive Depth

There was none.

But there were some positives last season and off season Trading Marion Gaborik landed Cam Fowler. And as much as this reporter loves Cam Fowler, our new GM flipped Fowler for Anton Stralman and 3 draft picks. This ultimately led to Dustin Byfuglien, Jakub Zboril, Nick Paul, Axel Holmstrom, and Rinat Valiev. Not a bad haul.

There was also the trading of Justin Abdelkader for Kevin Hayes, Markus Granlund, and Eric Huala. Haula, of course, was subsequently flipped in a trade to bring in defenseman Marc Staal. Another brilliant trade for the Hurricanes.

While they may have given up their 8th overall pick in 2015, it was a necessary payment for proven goaltender Tuukka Rask, who is one of the leagues top goaltenders and pool point producers.

Last thing for positives is the depth this organization now has for prospects. Under Monty's short tenure, the organization has added: Nikolaj Ehlers, Madison Bowey, Julius Honka, Ryan Pulock, Jan Kostalek, Nick Paul, Axel Holmstrom, Andreas Johnson, Stephon Williams, Ilya Sorokin, Jakub Zboril, Rasmus Andersson, Kyle Wood, Keegan Kolesar, Aleksi Saarela, Rinat Valiev, and Conor Garland. Oh yeah, and signing UFAs Artemi Panarin and Viktor Tikhonov prior to the seasons ending. Good moves.

When GM Monty came in, he pointed out 3 areas he wanted to accomplish.

1. Find a legitimate starting goaltender.

2. Beef up the defense.

3. Improve prospect pool.

He's done all these things. And I was excited about everything he had completed. Up until Tyler Seguin being traded. I like Scheifele and I really like Brayden Schenn. The two together will undoubtedly garner quite a bit of points for the team. However, Tyler Seguin is not only an elite center, behind Crosby and Stamkos in talent, but his contract is what made him incredibly valuable. Now, perhaps that's why the return was as good as it was. However, I'm of the opinion that you NEVER trade an elite player. Especially on a contract as good as his.

I honestly believed that with all the GM movement for the Hurricanes last season, this team couldn't be setup for a worse year. However, after all the positive moves Monty made, has he undone all of hard work by trading the leagues best center? We'll find out soon enough.

When do we have to set our ELC slides?

I want to see what happens at training camps before making a final decision.

Thanks for getting this to 2 pages guys, didn't want to post any trades/signings on the first page haha! Will post those later today.

The Los Angeles Kings agree.

Here is an exclusive clip of GM D-Money and his imaginary assistant at the King's control station right after confirmation of the Seguin trade:
