2015 - 2016 Magic Number Chart:

Welcome back to yet another exciting season of Canucks Hockey. The Magic Number Chart returns for it's 7th season. There is nothing new this year as I am satisfied with my chart. As an experienced member, I would like to see more community output. I trialed a broadcast post last year, but it didn't generate as much hits alone as I had hoped. Instead, I am going to post various broadcast tidbits in here when they become available.

Eastern Conference:

Western Conference:

Update Schedule:

October & November: Bi-Weekly starting with the 2nd Sunday of the season.

December: Weekly on every sunday.

January: Every Wednesday & Sunday.

February: Every two days

March & April: Daily

What is the Magic Number Chart?

The Magic Number Chart is essentially a standings chart that outlines the progress of each team throughout the regular season. The Magic Number itself is a formulated number that explains the Win/Loss differential required to clinch a post-season birth. Given that the clinching formula is based on divisional structure the formula will be based on the top 3 teams per division. The remaining 2 wild card spots will be decided based on the highest point total, followed by the NHL's standard tiebreaker rules.

Table Codes:

Poss: Points Possible

Pace: Point Pace

Rem: Points Remaning to be won

Magic #: Formulated Number

P/M: Plus/Minus in terms of separation between teams. (Formula to be added later)

Change: The Magic Number Change between update intrevals

Playoff: Playoff Contention Status

X/Y/Z/P: Playoff/Division/Converence/Preisdent's Trophy Contention points needed

Playoff Opponent: Playoff Opponent once decided.

Explanation of Pace Formula:

The pace formula is very simple. It's Total Points / Games Played * 82 (Total Games in Season).

By evaluating the chart, if you look under the 'Pace' section of the Chart, all you have to do is look at the 9th placed team's Pace, and then you know what the point total is to clinch a spot.

The Pace formula is based on the most common output given the pace of a current team.

Of course there's always the potential for every team to go above that pace, but statistically speaking, the variation won't be more than 3-5 points up or down, so the pace is a safe assumption.

The X/Y/Z/P Columns represent the true clinching point requirement to make the playoffs, However this does not indicate the expected clinching total.

I will be posting later on in the season an expected clinching scenario as well as the actual scenario to clinch a playoff spot.

Update:

I will now provide projected standings for each team in the NHL. These will be updated with the chart. I may post a lottery pick chart later in the season if I am able.

Apart from losing seasons, this thread has been a success!

Nice work with the charts. However, I don't think you should take too much personal responsibility for losing seasons.

I have a question. I wonder what the critical point total is for determining whether the Canucks will be sellers at the deadline. I want them to either be well above it (implying the team has a shot for deep playoff run) or below (implying that we trade vets for draft picks and have a good draft). The worst outcome will be to pass up the chance to acquire draft picks (or, even worse, trade away draft picks) and then miss the playoffs anyway.
