HC20.0
I like Abdelkader, but I think the term is way too long for a fringe second liner. Great third liner, but 7 years? Yikes.
D-Money
23 goals last season, and on pace for the same this year. That's standard 2nd line production.Add in his 2-way game, and he's a very valuable player. The term is long, but that was the concession to get him at such a reasonable cap hit. Baer.
This contract is gonna come back to haunt them in a few years. Too much money for 7 years. Must have a really good agent.
Bang Bang Boogie
Yikes...Ken Holland overpaid in both AAV AND term. Detroit fans are going to hate on this guy in a few years.
Edlerberry
when grinders get put with datsyuks and zetterbergs and get money because of the coaches utilization of them rather than skills. he hits... aaaaand otherwise is rly average. give trust 4-5 seasons with detritus top line, he'd probably have a 23 goal season once too. TheRussianRocket.
Makes no fracking sense. At all.Holland over his head. At least when Franzen got it he was a top 6 beast and just turned out to have a ton of injuries. Being a Wings fan, this deal is just stupid. Whatever.. Blueberries
This 7 years thing is getting out of hand. Honestly NHL needs to go 4 years max.
RonMexico
What is with these lifer deals. I kinda wish the NHL would go full NFL salary cap. Sign a 7 year deal? So what, we can cut you at any time.
MovesLikeDatsyuk
I like Abdelkader, but I think the term is way too long for a fringe second liner. Great third liner, but 7 years? Yikes. He is a 1st liner and will remain a 1st liner for as long as Zettererg is on the team. Zetty and Abdelkader have been put together for going on 3 years now. No he doesn't have the most skill or even let alone enough skill to be on a first line. But his play mesh's so well with the play of great skilled players such as zetty or dats. He would be a good fit for the Sedins aswell.
Guest
He's Detroit's Jannik Hansen, but with better linemates. Jank could have earned a contract like that had he played 3 yeas with the twins.

At least when Franzen got it he was a top 6 beast and just turned out to have a ton of injuries. Being a Wings fan, this deal is just stupid. Whatever..1) Franzen's deal is one of those huge, back-diving deals (11 years, 43.5 million). He's been paid 5 mil+ every year of the deal, including this one. Can't do that anymore.2) As the cap rises, so do equivalent salaries. The salary cap was $56.8 million in 2009-10 (first year of Franzen's deal). So Franzen's <4 million dollar cap hit was just under 7% of the total cap space. (Without the backdiving, his contract would have been $5 mil, which would have been 8.8% of the cap at that time.) The current salary cap is $71.4 mil, so even with a stale cap Abdelkater's salary is only 5.95%. So in comparison, Abdelkater's deal takes almost 15% less cap than Franzen's did. (Had it not been for the back-diving contract, Franzen's deal would have been almost 50% higher.)3) $4+ mil for a UFA-eligible, middle-six 2-way player who gets you 20+ goals is the new reality. Brandon Sutter, Carl Soderberg, Artem Anisimov, Nikolay Kulemin, Jussi Jokinen, Carl Hagelin, etc.

Alflives
Kinda like Hansen getting 4 millway better than the Kesler deal, and for a more useful player.

Not to mention he's 28 so he won't become a star all of a sudden or anything like that unexpectedly. Abs also had a ridiculous shooting percentage last year which he won't come close to this season. Not to mention 20 goal scorers tend to pop up into existence next to elite centres. Weird how that works :/...Abs has size which is something we really lack in that department. I mean he's a great player for us, but I doubt Zetts plays for another 7 years alongside Abs to make this contract look worthwhile. Oh well. Holland has been doing some whacked out things the last handful of years.

Granted, Abdelkader is only 28, but Zetterberg is 35 and Datsyuk is 37 so he can't ride their coattails for much longer. We all love Burr but we know he's not a first liner without the Sedins. It's the same with Abdelkader and you note that yourself. This is an overpriced contract for too long.
The Lock
Good for Abdelkader. Questionable for Detroit. That's almost what we were paying Kesler a few years ago. Last I check, Abdelkader's not Kesler.....
