[Waivers] Ferraro(det) Granberg(tor)

Wouldn't be opposed to Ferraro either though TBH. It might mean sending down Cracknell, but Ferraro is a natural center, and though Cracknell's work ethic is super impressive, he looks way better as a RWer than center.

Ferraro..former team-mate of Brandon Sutter's in Red Deer. 42 points in the AHL last year (career high 47), put up super impressive playoff numbers in Grand Rapids run to the finals (under Blashill too, so surprised he's waived TBH). From Trail, ex-WHLer (Benning and Linden digging that). Played very limited minutes this year..including only 2 minutes last game. Think he could handle 4th line minutes between Prust and Dorsett IMO.

Might not be worth moving down the waiver line-up either, but might be worth the risk..

Tampa Bay could very well pick up Ferraro. They're being pelted with injuries.

I'd love to see JB put a claim in for Granberg. Kid's ready, just had a bad injury in training camp. Problem is, we have no room and would have to send Hutton. So a reluctant pass.

Or move/send down Weber? No real loss considering his play this year.

Horachek on Granberg in January (last season):

Quote

"He competes, he has an edge to him," Horachek said of the 6-foot-3 Swede. "I think he plays the way he practices. He doesn't know any other way. He's good defensively, he has a good stick and plays strong. But when you move up (to the NHL), you have to be able to handle the pace and the transition in speed of the game. As long as that's all right, he'll work out as we expected."

It is true, that year with Henrik and Daniel Sedin as well. They will have chemistry.

The we can bump Tanev to the second pairing and just waive Weber.

Even if he doesn't play with Edler—seems like the ideal place for him to receive mentor-ship and develop. Benning might be looking to the future for other players who might fall to waivers, and want to keep his place in the waiver-line-up, but Granberg is definitely an intriguing option IMO.

It is like this waiver has "attention Vancouver Canucks, this is for Corrado" all over it.

Judging by the little I know about him, seems like a comparable to Ulf Samuelsson. Similar size, draft place, Samuelsson put up OK numbers at the AHL level, but solid defensively, great along the boards for his era, solid in terms of roughness and aggressive play. Although Samuelsson kind of became an offensive threat with Babych, it was never really his role.

With Weber's play helping in late game collapses, maybe a bigger, stay-at-home defenseman with untapped potential is better for Canucks' depth, especially as Weber isn't producing offensively anyway. Especially one that is already familiar with at least 3 players on the team.

Put it this way: he was on the top pairing with (Alex) Edler (against Canada at the world championship's) and they played most of the game against (Steven) Stamkos' line.

If he can keep the bridle on Edler, grab him.

Edler - Granberg

Hutton - Tanev

Hamhuis - Sbisa

As the season progresses, drop Edler's and Hammer's minutes a bit for Ben's.  Looks much better already -- three potentially solid pairings... and it done cost nuttin'.

Pretty quick to think that Granberg can be relied upon for top-4 minutes. Remember, he's played no hockey so far this year. Most likely, he would play minor, sheltered minutes like the Canucks young forwards for a few games before he was either sent down or trusted with more. If he can surprise and move up to playing with Edler, then great, I just think it'll take a while.

Can he be worse than Weber?

I think he would be less useful than Weber on the PP, even with Weber's current bad production—but probably already just as good defensively, and the Canucks need depth to stop with the late game collapses. If Granberg can hold his own while Hutton is out, then Granberg could very well be an improvement over Weber. If not? Try to send him down to Utica. Low risk.

Indeed, those pairings weren't in order.  Hutton/Tanev should eventually take over top minutes, with the other two pairs splitting.  Doesn't need to and likely won't happen overnight, but get him in there and see what he can do.  If he busts, nothing ventured nothing gained.  We're in a transition/development year anyway.

Weber has a horrible time trying to knock players off of the puck or win puck battles because of his size. Big forwards just brush him off with one arm on their way to the net.  I wonder if this guy at 6 foot 3 and 200 would be a little more effective in that department.

Puck movement isn't so much a problem now as simple defending, and Weber/Bartkowski have been inconsistent at best.  If Granberg can be big, solid, and simply reliable in that regard it's a win, plus the fact we'll have more size and physicality back there.  We can play a four-forward set on the PP if need be.
