Willie and Linden promised us speed. Well where is it?

When torteralla was fired, I recall the day were Willie sat at the conference and said, we will never be a dump and chase team, but what happen Willie? I get that were losing, but were the heck is the speed and that run and gun system Willie promised us?

This team looks like a Torteralla coached team, all they do is dump and chase. Last year this team had good games were they showed some skill and speed, but this year its a one line team and I have to say I think Willie has lost his mind. Willie has changed his system to a Minnesota Wild system were all they do is dump and chase and as a fan its boring hockey! Relying on goaltenders to steal you games and playing a dump and chase, why not go back to run and gun hockey? Like last year were atleast they were taking risks getting chances, eg quality scoring chances?

Let the players be who they are, guys like Baerstchi and Mcann will not benefit from a dump and chase system; at the moment only one line is playing Willie's boring system to perfection.

Willie wants to win.

With an open system that would benefit McCann, Baer, and Virtanen, you allow the other team to possess a lot more open ice. We can't afford to do that with our current squad.

Think about it like this, our current system is sheltering our 6 man back-end. Can you imagine if we actually employed a system where they had a lot less help from the forward group? We'd be dead last in the league by a long shot.

Speed and scoring is nice. Winning is better. Especially for a coach that's still trying to make a name for himself in this league.

I get there grinders, but they can skate atleast I know Burrows and Dorsett can

That style of hockey isn't just about skating in a line really fast up and down the ice, you'd have to be able to execute once in a while or you'll have odd man rush after odd man rush the other way.

They're building the pieces to be able to in the future. Starting with Jake and Jared

So Willie is doing this for his ego, a wasted skilled talent like Baertschi, who is being forced to play a dump and chase game, which is something he is not use to at all and just check out Vrbata's numbers

I think a lot of the problems start on the backend. When your Defence can't get the puck up the ice, it's tough to not play dump and chase hockey.

The Canucks, after Hutton and Tanev, haven't passed the puck overly well this season. And if you aren't confident you can make a pass from your end, "Off the glass and out" is the safest play.

Problem is, they are a team that still allows 30+ shots on their own goalie even playing a dump & chase system.

If they are serious about a win, then just play the trap. Its is boring, but it is safe.

Just like that year when Luongo first arrived in Vancouver.

Were a much younger team than last year or the year before. This kind of play is expected. We have a 19 year old as our second line center, a 20 year old as our 3rd line center, a 23 year old winger, a 21 year old d-man, a 19 year old winger who's currently injured, and an injured 26 year old center/winger that is vital to our team and out for 1-2 months.

We are battling injuries, our lines are mixed up every game except for the first line, and our lack of chemistry is all over the place.

There are two interwoven patterns to this team:

Overpaid, project players.

We have taken in the throw aways from other teams, and then paid them well when they perform, even given them NTC's, if only marginally better than they were expect to.  Is this some kind of ego driven compensation method by management saying "Aha!  See?  We knew it!"?

_________________________________________________________________

Burrows.  Fan fave, but remember his roots?  4.5mil? He was paid too big too late.

Higgins.  1st round throw away. Inconsistent and disinterested.

Tanev.  4.45mil for what?  That swing out behind the next exit move he has?  Was not drafted...

Dorsett.  Ugh. 2.65mil for an 'energy' guy?  Because he has history with WD?

Prust.  Ok, Mgmt did not arrange this contract.  2.5mil for what he inconsistently brings is a joke.

Miller.  Overpayed and again, declining skillset.

Sbisa.  I actually like him.  But Anaheim sure didn't. And his cap hit is kind of high. Real worth tbd.

The following players are not that expensive, per se.. more than I will ever make... but they are recycled.

Markstrom.  No one wanted the guy.  Cleared waivers 1yr after being called "the best goalie in the world not in the NHL."

Weber.  A 'powerplay specialist' that clears waivers.  Too small for the tiny Montreal Canadiens... 1.5mil? Ugh

Baerstschi.  Couldn't make the flames. For a reason...

This list is sure to cheese people off.  But I stand by my words.

There is a time, place, and value for project players.  But loading your team with cubic zirconias and calling them diamonds in the rough?  Is craaaaaazy...  Perhaps this is what happens when you trade away your future to keep propping up a declining, and over rated, core for too long.  Perhaps the rest of the league has just taken advantage of this team, for too long.

Note to Jim Benning:

I know you're goal has been to get faster as a team and that you've brought in more speed with guys like McCann, Virtanen, Hutton, Bear Cheese and Bartkowski, starting the transition to becoming a faster more attack minded team.

I mean c'mon Benning, you've already had one full season to overhaul this old, stale lineup, so where is this fast team you promised? I WAN'T IT NOW!!!!

Love, Desi.
