[Report] Ryan Nugent-Hopkins out 6-8 weeks

Recommended Posts

It was rumoured earlier, the Oilers wanted Seth Jones from Nashville for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Since that deal fell apart, there was speculation, they could be looking to trade Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to St. Louis for Kevin Shattenkirk. Now, this happened. Unfortunate for the Oilers, or maybe, they'll be glad to be picking first overall, again.

Quote

Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will be out for six to eight weeks after injuring his hand during Monday's 4-2 win at Florida.

Oilers coach Todd McLellan called it a "long-term injury" after the game, then provided a time frame for Nugent-Hopkins's recovery at Tuesday's practice.

Nugent-Hopkins was hurt while on penalty-killing duty early in the second when he blocked a shot by the Panthers' Dmitry Kulikov. He left the ice and did not return.

Nugent-Hopkins, 22, has eight goals and 22 assists in 46 games this season, his fifth in the NHL after being drafted first overall in 2011.

Edmonton (19-23-5) has the worst record in the Western Conference and has been without Connor McDavid, this year's No. 1 pick, since early November when he suffered a broken collarbone.

McLellan said that despite the injury to Nugent-Hopkins, the Oilers will not rush McDavid back to action.

"He's not ready," McLellan said.

Oilers aren't that far off,  in fact they have won the same amount of actual hockey games as the Canucks (15)

Nugent-Hopkins has been very good defensively for Edmonton, but the good news is the Oilers are very deep up front, especially when McDavid returns.

The Edmonton Oilers need to start remaining healthy if they are to boost their competitiveness level.  A few trades are required too.  They don't necessarily need more all-stars, it's their depth players that need a boost.  And is Brad Ference still the team captain?

edit:  Andrew Ference?

2 minutes ago, Ryan Nugent Hopkins said:

Maybe the canucks could get him at the deadline lol

God i would be so happy

Why would you be so happy?  Where does he fit in our line up?  He's not good enough to be a ligitimate 1, so where does he play?  He's not a 2 either.  That makes him a 3, and he's now a 3 with an anchor contract.

The team sucked with him in the line up, they will probably suck without him, no difference.

Its safe to say like most teams who draft very high over the course of multiple drafts, those players eventually start to help the team do pretty well, maybe make the playoffs a few times.  But for the case of the garbage Edmonton Oilers none of their 1st picks have helped them, even their most recent non Connor pick was 4 years ago (yakupov) have done absolutely nothing for this team.  They are all busts.

If the Oilers get another first overall pick this season I'm going to break something. Hell, I'd be okay with the NHL actually rigging the lottery this go round so they DON'T win it.

Too bad for the Oil though, they're within striking distance of a playoff spot given how bad our division has been.
