The Iowa Caucuses - Feb. 1 - The Road to the White House Begins. Update: Cruz Wins, Clinton/Sanders Tie

The race to become the President of the United States finally becomes real after months of debate, acrimony, and controversy.   The Iowa caucuses can give momentum to the winner or it may not.  Past winners of the Iowa Caucuses have not always gone on to be the President.

In one corner, we have the Republicans with Donald Trump and Ted Cruz as frontrunners.  While Trump is ahead nationally, Trump and Cruz are in a close battle in Iowa.  It could go either way.

In the other corner, we have the Democrats with Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders as frontrunners.  Clinton is ahead nationally but in Iowa it is much closer between the two.  Could be an upset with Sanders winning.

Has the Iowa caucus winner ever gone on to be President? Seems to me that they're on a huge losing streak...

Edit: I googled, and yes there were a few. (Obama, Dubya) A lot more losers than winners though.

School me, why is Iowa so important?  I'm sure it is not in size ... symbolic that it is the first?

I see it as a marathon .. who cares if you are leading in the first 1/2 mile mark?

It's not. It's significant because it's the start, but it's not particularly representative.

I know that many pundits are critical of having a mostly white, mostly Christian state like Iowa be the starting point of the Presidential race. Most feel that a state with more diverse demographics like Florida, California, or New York would be more appropriate.

Amazing that US, one of the most powerful nations has to choose from these 4 candidates ... the aged communist/socialist sounds like the best option frankly.

Honestly, despite what people here might want to believe

If it comes down to Bernie vs Trump or Cruz Bernie will win.

Bernie will have the youth (18-45) and so called "minority vote" as well as those conservatives/republicans that are disgusted with Trump or believe that Cruz is not American due to his place of birth.

At least with bernie as POTUS they can control the senate/house and block everything he does, with Trump or Cruz you'd end up with some jackass reading green eggs and ham or starting wars with everyone or both and having the more hard line republicans doing everything they ask.

this skit explains it all.. ;)

I see ...

I do find the US system a bit cumbersome.  All of this energy, time, and money to hold the caucuses are just to select who will run for each party ... it's kind of like semi-finals.

Imagine if the Liberals, NDP, and Conservatives all had their leadership convention 6 months before federal elections.  But having said that, US politics is pure entertainment and good reality TV.

Maybe the length of it is a good thing though. Candidates can't ride a hot streak for several weeks and then take office just because of that. I think the Brits have real short elections. So if the U.S. followed suit and cut election time into a quarter, or whatever, of what it is now..

Ladies and gentleman, the President of the United States.. Donald J. Trump! .. I mean that might happen anyway (hopefully not), but this extra time gives someone like Bernie to get his face and name out there.

Except Bernie isn't a better option.
