If an Arena is Built it won't be in downtown Seattle

SEATTLE -- The Seattle City Council Monday voted 5-4 against vacating Occidental Avenue in order to build a new NBA or NHL arena south of Safeco Field.

The narrow vote means a complicated, often acrimonious, saga around a new Seattle arena will go on.

Council President Bruce Harrell voted yes along with councilmembers Tim Burgess, Rob Johnson, and Mike O’ Brien.

Councilmembers Sally Bagshaw, Lorena Gonzalez, Lisa Herbold, Debora Juarez, and Kshama Sawant voted no.

The vote was on whether to allow arena investor Chris Hansen to buy, and vacate, a one-block stretch of Occidental Avenue.  It was the last step before the City of Seattle could issue a Master Use Permit for the project, and potentially lure an NBA or NHL franchise to Seattle to fill

Ugh, why ladies?

Seattle would be a great place. Plus if the Yotes were to be relocated, it would not only keep them in the West, but the Pacific as well.

Arizona won't move. Bettman won't let it.

The league probably wants to expand into Vegas and Seattle to even up the conferences. Quebec may get a team by relocation depending on the CAD and the new arena in Quebec city.

No longer Bettman's call since majority stakes were sold to Andrew Barroway in 2014. If he goes "I'm tired of losing 15 mil every year" one day and wanted to pack up and leave town, he could as long as location and stadium were approved by the league.

That's a massive shame. Funny seeing it break down strictly along gender lines. For all the talk about urban desnifying and creating a centralized city, killing the chance to put a arena for two sports teams, concerts, and other various events right alongside Safeco and Century link is a poor move.

Delays the debut of the NHL and the return of the NBA, and puts them in a place that will be harder for a larger core audience to attend (in that they won't even be in Seattle proper, which is not a bad idea for any team in an arena setting.)

Understand the cost concerns, but it's a mistake.

200 Million of Bonds, with a unknown amount of them getting subsidized by government. Anything that's not completely privately funded should be killed on principle.

Even if that wasn't true, I don't know why anyone here should care where they build the arena.

The Grizzlies were doomed when they took fat country with first ever pick.

It it was tried and it failed. End of story

That was like JJ Daigneault on crutches...Big Country was so not NBA'ish at all.

You don't think Vancouver will ever get a team again?

I don't think there's a reason for anyone to try bringing basketball back to Canada.

The game really sucks when you can ignore three quarters of the game, tune in for fifteen minutes, and know who will win just by which team is taller.

I mean come on.    You want basketball to be interesting, raise the hoop five feet and see who really has skill

We already have an arena. Centre Videotron has been open since last October.

Statement from Chris Hansen on behalf of the Arena Investment Group

Today’s City Council vote was disappointing but we don’t believe it is the end of the road in our quest to bring the NBA and NHL back to Seattle. We know all the fans who have stood solidly by us these past years share our disappointment but it is important that we all stay focused on our shared goal.

We now need to take a little time to step back and evaluate our options, better understand the council’s concerns and find a path forward. We will keep you posted.

Well the Whitecaps had a perfect venue in their Waterfront Stadium plan, and expandable from 25,000 to 35,000. Outdoors, grass, and right by the Skytrain and Seabus. That plan was killed when residents worried people would be too loud and unruly.

It would have been built privately over the railyards. We could have knocked down BC Place and put in more residential area. Sometimes good ideas get scuttled by politics.
