Third period and OT have to go down as one of the worst 24 minute stretches in Edler's career.  Brutal on 3 goals.  Caught totally flat footed on two of them. Did he really think Hossa was going to try to go around him?   Bad enough most of the team didn't have a clue how to hold a lead, but then your most veteran and apparently #1 D-man plays like a deer caught in the headlights.

Although I agree that Edler sucked today, that last goal, he needed help from a backchecking forward, namely Baertschi. You can see Baertschi just letting Hossa walk in one-on-one against your defenceman.

The Hawks second goal was all Edler's fault. You can't let a forward walk in through you like that.

Blame Edler all you want for the bad goals, he was terrible in the later stages of the game, but Willie Desjardins has him playing 27 minutes.

Alex Edler is simply not a 25+ minute kind of defenceman. He's best at 23 mins tops. Everyone knows that by now. The more he plays, the sloppier and weaker his defence gets. He looked tired on the 2nd goal and bad on the GWG, but brilliant for the first 40 minutes when he was fresh.

WD pull your head in and learn how to use your best defenceman. Good coaches know how to get the best out of their players, and burning Eddy out with 27 minutes is not how. AV always knew how many minutes to play the Sedins, Edler and Kesler which is how he took them to the Cup Final. The twins played 18-19 minutes a night, Edler was never more than 23 minutes and together they shined.

Tortorella comes in and blows the tyres off with the Sedins playing 20+ minutes and destroying Edler's confidence.

Now we've got WD playing the Sedins anywhere between 18 and 21 minutes, and Edler is often getting 25+ minutes a night. We don't have to play him that much. We've got Sbisa and Tryamkin on the left not to mention Hutton capable of more minutes. Tryamkin played 13 minutes, Sbisa played 16:51. Give Tryamkin 15, give Sbisa 18 and suddenly there's 3 minutes off Edler's big night. Give Hutton another of those minutes and we've got Edler down to 23 minutes which is where he's best.

It's easy to blame Edler but we have to know what we've got with him and how to use him best. He's not a Norris-trophy, 30 minutes defenceman. He's at his best at 22-24 minutes a night and that's what we need to do with him. Blame WD for this, not Edler.

Good post. I don't think there is any hope of WD handling Edler's minutes properly.

This game and some of the other games showed that this team can be competitive. I think they are competitive despite the coach, not because of the coach. I think it's time for WD to be let go. It's going to be a tough decision for the management but sooner the better if they want to compete for the wild card spot.

Every coach since AV have played Edler mega minutes. IMO it was through necessity as the d-core was not strong. In fact Edler broke in because of a weak group. Totally agree that his TOI should be in the 22 minute range. My rationale is that it is more important to spread the ice out and develop the bottom 2 pairings.

Pretty much this but with the caveat that in not sure what people want WD to do.

If he'd played Sbisa more instead, the Sbisa thread would have simply been the busier thread instead with hilarious pylon and Sbisa's pizzas comments there instead of everyone piling on Edler.

The Hawks turned it on and they're a better team. Period.

some perspective

very nice

and i agree we saw a good hawk team

they were at their best for the last period and a bit of the game

and we got to see the nucks at their best the first 40 minutes

anyone who knows hockey and saw Q's upset at the end of the 2nd period

knew we were gonna see the full on hawk team in the 3rd

it was a good game all round. .  fun to watch
