Gaunce sitting during the Calder run is a perfect example. I bet this weekend the lines will be jumbled up by Green as we were desperate for goals last weekend. Green will try something to jump start our offense. It might be as simple as bringing Subban right back after a power play shift and increasing his TOI. I think Rendulic is coming back and he had the hot hand for awhile. Zalewksi, Pelletier and Rendulic is a good AHL line. Top line willl be Archie, Valk and Grenier, 3d will be Virt, Cassels and Kunyk and 4th will be Bancks, Hamilton, Carcone or Roy unless Green goes with 7 D again. Gotta have the 2 points tonight. McEneny went on a tear there for awhile and had 5 or 6 goals in about as many games. Green had him out there constantly. Then Green tried Valk with VIrtanen for a bunch of games and I think Virtanen had points in 5 games in a row. Valk is a very good set up man. When Grenier came back from Vancouver Green went back to Valk, Archie, Grenier, which has been the top scoring line. But Cassels was coming on so he moved him up with Virt and Cody Kunyk (I like him as a player btw). Pelletier has been a bit of a disappointment, he was supposed to be the vet center that would be a top 6. He has been moved around a lot because of under performance. I like this approach. If somebody's hot give them a shot (sports performance is tied to emotions which always change) If a forward gets heightened and wants to charge to the net some more or might be on a scoring streak, play him to succeed. The converse is true if a player just doesn't want to get into the game-going through the motions, bench him.
stonecoldstevebernier
The Comets are about to get underway vs Rochester, with Demko getting the start as expected. Pedan, Nilsson, and Negrin are the defense scratches; Labate and Rendulic are both back in the lineup which should provide a nice boost for Utica today. Cassels is the odd man out at forward. Elsewhere: early in the second period, Binghamton leads St. John's 2-1. Toronto vs Syracuse is just about to start, as is Albany vs Providence. stonecoldstevebernier
Line combos/defense pairings today: Archibald-Zalewski-Grenier Kunyk-Valk-Virtanen Carcone-Pelletier-Rendulic Labate-Hamilton-Bancks Robak-Subban Billins-Shields McEneny-Sautner
Sean Monahan
Could be interesting to see how Jake does playing with a more skillful pivot in Valk.
stonecoldstevebernier
No score at the end of the first, with Utica leading in shots 12-6. The Comets are holding a definite edge in play so far, but Ullmark has been the difference. The Kunyk-Valk-Virtanen line had a fantastic shift in the offensive zone with all three getting one-timer shots off, but all were somehow turned aside. Robak also had a glorious chance on the same possession with a wide open net but he was almost at the goal line and couldn't make the tough angle work. Archibald and Rendulic also had a couple of nice chances - the Comets are outskating the Americans by a fair margin here, and that's what you like to see given the two teams' difference in points and what's at stake here for Utica. Not a lot work for Demko in the first but he did have to make a tricky save off of Vaive who found some space one-on-one deep in the slot. Binghamton leads St John's 3-2 at the end of the second; Providence leads Albany 2-0 at the end of the first, and Toronto leads Syracuse 1-0 late in the first. theilluminati
Damn, I didn't realize how poor the AHL North division is compared to the other divisions. Looks like 3 of the 4 playoff teams will have a negative goal differential and even the division leading Marlies are only at .581 winning percentage. stonecoldstevebernier
1-0 Americans, just under three minutes into the second period. Nelson skates into the Comets zone and splits Robak and Subban (who do their best pylon impersonations) to go in alone on Demko and score.
Beary Sweet
Just tuned in and the Kunyk, Virtanen and Valk just had a glorious chance from a sharp angle with Valk feeding it over for Virtanen but it was easily stopped from Ullmark. Still 1-0 Amerks
Beary Sweet
Baptiste tips a Amerks pointshot home and they double their lead. So unfortunate. Comets have had a few solid chances and they just haven't been able to solve Ullmark yet
stonecoldstevebernier
2-0 Americans... Nelson with a point shot gets tipped by Baptiste in front, about 12 minutes left in the second. Not the start the Comets wanted in this period after a good first.
DeNiro
Comets need a game changer (other than Demko). Don't know why management are dragging their feet with Goldobin. Bet he sits again next game even though he could be playing for the Comets right now.

We'll get a chance to see him play tonight hopefully

Beary Sweet
Comets trailing 2-0 vs the Amerks through 2. Shots are 27-15 in favor of the Comets. They havent been able to get much going and they need to start getting some more opportunities and test Ullmark more. This weekend is our now or never in terms of our playoff hopes. It has to start in the final frame in this game
stonecoldstevebernier
2-0 Americans after two periods... the shots are 27-15 for Utica but that was a period to forget for the Comets. Not only do they surrender the two goals, they go 0/3 on the powerplay and Rendulic cut the third PP short by taking a dumb hooking penalty on a Rochester player trying to clear the zone. Grenier looks lost on the man advantage and passed up a great chance for a slapper by attempting a slap pass through a bunch of legs across the ice to Kunyk which obviously missed. In general, the PP just looks very disconnected as if not everyone is on the same page, and this could be another game where the PP woes come back to bite them if they don't make a comeback here in the third. I believe it was Valk who tried saucering two bad passes across the slot to Carcone for one timers and he whiffed on both; they're having trouble just stringing passes together, and Rochester is checking Subban close at the point so he can't get any shots off. Archibald had the best chance of the period diving for a loose puck laying to the side of Ullmark but just backhanded it off the side of the net. The Comets are getting all kinds of help again on the scoreboard and it would be a shame if they can't make up some ground today vs one of the worst teams in the league. St. John's lost to Binghamton and Albany looks primed to continue their losing skid, down 3-0 to Providence. Toronto's tied 2-2 with Syracuse. stonecoldstevebernier
Early in the third, the Comets get their fourth powerplay of the night - it ends up being their best one so far but still no luck. Archibald was causing havoc in front of the net and the Comets were able to find McEneny with some room at the point. Rendulic miraculously missed the net from about ten feet out on an incredible chance to score... still 2-0. Justin Bailey just absolutely turned Subban inside out and got in alone on Demko who was equal to the task. About 15 minutes to go in the third. stonecoldstevebernier
3-0 Americans... a point shot perfectly rebounds onto the stick of Baptiste who snaps it home on the powerplay. A little over 13 minutes to go in the third.
