2016-17 Utica Comets Thread

Recommended Posts

Would love to see the Canucks try to get Brad Berry from UND for the Comets.  Would probably be a longshot, since US College coaches are usually the absolute czar with their respective programs and that would be tough for most to give up to coach an AHL team.

I think Utica should go after Spencer Carbery of the Saginaw Spirit OHL. He is a young coach from Victoria who has had loads of success in the ECHL. His personality is infectious, the players love him and he has proven himself to be a winning coach who is serious about finding success in different levels of hockey.

Will be interested to hear who gets the head coaching position, I suspect it will be a long process, the future of the team has to be in good hands.

Utica is an interesting situation - when Green was hired in Utica imo it was essentially a scenario where the coach was going to be asked to do as much as possible with very little talent available.  In the end, very few impact prospects came out of Utica simply because there was little talent there to begin with and Green wasn't specifically responsible for 'developing talent' for the NHL - not saying he wasn't a good coach, in fact very few coaches could've done what he did and reached the finals that year with the team he had to work with.  The situation now in Utica however is completely different than what Green walked into with Utica - JB has done a pretty decent job of stockpiling some talent at pretty much every position and the new Utica head coach will have to be able to develop talent with the specific goal of graduating players to the NHL - the importance of appropriately choosing the position of head coach in Utica cannot be understated at this point in the Canucks' re-build.

Kevin Constantine

Long time NHL guy that in my view was always a Pat Burns type guy. Very demanding but a great players coach. A hard ass that has been coaching Everitt for several years and is now a free agent coach.

Not sure if we just need a coach that's trying to cut his teeth in the profession but a good veteran coach that's "been there done that" could be the type Utica needs. A guy that's gonna transition the mindset of the incoming junior players into sure fire pro's while being handle the career AHL'ers at the same time. Know which vets to pair up with the young bucks, etc...

Definately open to Scott Walker joining the staff as an assistant too but I can see him wanting to run his own brigade.

Malhotra can stay here and keep working on draws with Canucks.

Willie MItchell would be an awesome coach to work with the D

Steve Konowalchuk has been a great coach for Seattle the past few years and everyone that's played for him speaks of how much of a demanding coach he is too. Sucks that the last memory of him at The Rog was his involvement in the Steve Moore dogpile

Rocky Thompson, although a punching bag in his time, has done a masterful job with Windsor.

If Green is picking the coach, I'm sure he wants a guy that is on the same page as him and coaches the same style. Clearly that describes all of the above.

From earlier today - the priority for me would be Valk, Archibald, Grenier, then Rendulic. Valk and Archibald are a virtual tie but Utica has always been sorely lacking in centre depth and offensive skill so Valk should be an automatic. Archibald's the heart of the team and you'd think he'd be interested to return again after a career year. Just remains to be seen whether the Canucks are willing to sign them to two-way deals to keep them in the fold or if they'll accept AHL-only deals again despite their improved totals. Grenier is meh, his future with the Canucks is most likely done but he's a solidified top six guy in the AHL and those players are always needed on your farm team. But he could be replaced with another AHL vet if the Canucks see a better fit. Don't see much point in bringing back Rendulic unless its an AHL only contract, he had a great second half after a horrible start but like Grenier his type of player is replaceable.

Yes, and ideally it will be the likes of Chaput and Megna who will replace them this year.

looks like they're gutting the Aud:

Seems ambitious to have that ready for September.

Adding in some private boxes over existing sections and putting in new womens bathrooms (which were desperately needed). Also re-doing an entrance. Not as big a job as it looks, so they should be able to get it done.

Canucks are hopefully in a full rebuild. Why not rotate the Canuck assistant coaches down to Utica for 2 week/1 month stints behind the bench? Great vertical and opportunity for the coaches.

This is one absolutely awful idea.
