Good advice Rob, but if someone has no hockey knowledge whatsoever, at either the fundamental level or an advanced level, will watching help them at all?

I guess not, they would then have to resort to terms like "fan boi wet dream" or similar I would imagine.   Just spitballing though.

Thats exactly it... Some people just don't even know what to look for when they do watch.

It seems most think watching a game is having it on the tube while they play fortnite or beerpong....

By watching last year I knew that Stecher and Hutton would have breakout years and it was obvious what EP would bring....it is just as obvious what OJ will bring.

Oli could be on the team now and playing big minutes...we don't have a guy that can pass like that on D. but both Stecher and Hutton as well as 'look before you pass" Pouliot are pushing there breakout game ...passing and rushing...because they know Oli and Quinn are coming....

I bet they actually watched Oli play a bit....

I would suggest listening to the professionals like the GM and coach of the Comets, have heard a lot of positive things from them. Still agree he needs more time to develop, let him play 20+ minutes a night until after trade deadline/Christmas then give him a couple looks with the main squad.

Last I heard Johnson said he was happy with Juolevi's play and he comfortable with him playing 20 mins a night. Has that changed?

Perhaps people should simply watch him play.   It isn't hard to get a feed (live or delayed) for every game.

I definitely would if I had the time to. My favorite thread is always the draft thread and I have less time this year to follow draft eligibles. It sucks.

No has not changed, if anything has probably taken on greater role due to injuries.

It's hard to get a read on how he's doing. On one hand, there are people who will pump his tires and blindly defend him no matter what because he's a Canucks' prospect. On the other there are people who seem to think he's been garbage so far.

If he had a bad +/- it would be easy to write off, but having one of the worst in the league is a sign that something might be up. Despite that, he's been scoring at a good pace too.

I don't really know what to make of it. It's likely somewhere in the middle.

The bi polar reaction to OJ has been there since the second JB said his name at the draft.

He is an AHL rookie, 20 years old and progressing.  The only negative is his current - in the +\- stats. That’s a miss leading metric, but not without some indication that he is a promissing rookie AHL d man that still needs to improve his defensive play.

The team in Utica has been without Demko, filling in for the parent team already and I don’t know how much the forwards backcheck on the lines OJ is deployed with. Added to that, what’s his quality of competition.  In other words, is it OJ and some deficiency he needs to improve on, or a team issue.

Let the ad nauseum debate continue.

Or jist read Zepps posts above and enjoy OJ’s progress...

Why would you listen to the GM and former NHL player when some random coach potato on an internet site who hasn't watched him play says he has sucked?

You clearly are not watching the games and are simply taking stats at random.   Have watched each and every Utica game by delayed feed and have them stored and I can count one game plus one period where OJ looked like a guy thinking too hard and trying to force things.   EVERY other period he has been a force, pushing the play and making very good decisions with the puck.  Utica is a much younger team this year and many missed assignments leaving D often hung out.   Goaltending has been less than stellar too boot.

I was able to follow OJ last year closely inclusive of seeing him play live more than five times and he has continued to develop in the right areas.   His first pass remains elite and will transfer to the NHL very well.

I did read.   The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.

I could add:  The more that you watch, the more you will see.  OJ is really good, plus minus not for canuckstani.

Like most here I have watched the game since I was a kid, played through to University, done some coaching in Bantam A and just love the game.  I am slow to excuse opinions no matter where they come from.  You never know where you might find a jewel.  Sorting through it all on here is just fun to take in. ::D

just gonna put this out there but watching Montour and Shea Theodore play in the AHL as a San diego Gulls, you can tell they were the best players on the ice, and then you can see the AHL quality where you shake your fist at the other 4 players for not playing NHL helping out hockey, so bad stats doesnt mean he's bad just means the team isnt as a whole playing as a good team.

I just wish Utica would play Gulls more often then id watch more games

btw Gulls Arena sucks for hockey LOL

the good thing is that he is on the top pairing and he's not forced onto that role.  He is one of their top avaialble defenders.

This article in CA today by Daryl Keeping is a very good breakdown of Juolevi's game and how it is progressing. lots of video's of some of his defensive plays and exits out of the D zone.

awesome write up.  very honest.  His transitioning out is good.  Offensive zone contribution is  good, him being the power play specialist is a bonus, looks like he just needs to work on defensive positioning.

Just a reminder that Bo Horvat was a -30 in the 2015-16 season.

That is all.

And pointless in his only five games in Utica. Yip, cant judge a player solely on stats.
