b3.
Quote The Ottawa Senators have avoided arbitration with forward Mike Hoffman, signing the 26-year-old sniper to a four-year, $20.75-million contract. Hoffman’s deal carries an average annual value of $5,187,500 against the salary cap. He was scheduled for an August 4 arbitration hearing. Hoffman totalled career highs in goals (29), assists (30), and points (59) with the Senators in 2015-16. The native of Kitchener, Ontario, led all Senators skaters in goals, power-play goals (9), and ranked fourth in power-play points (13). Ottawa originally selected Hoffman in the fifth round, 130th overall, in the 2009 NHL Draft. Hoffman has registered 59 goals and 113 points in 186 career games. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/senators-lock-mike-hoffman-4-year-20-75m-deal/
Toews
That's a nice deal from the Sens point of view. I am surprised Hoffman took that.
Chronic.Canuck
Very good deal for the Senators. Also gives Hoffman a good opportunity at 30 to sign a long term contract if he keeps putting up 50-60 points or even takes it to the next level. I were Hoffman, I would have either pushed for 2-3 years (cashing in at 28/29) or for a longer 6-8 year deal.

oldnews
Seems reasonable enough. Hoffman produces - great speed, great finish - but he's also fed fairly easy minutes - which was one of the issues Ottawa have with him, his suspect game without the puck. Very high ozone starts (and concedes 10% finishes), middling quality of competition - and has tended to fade in the second half of seasons. One aspect to bring scoring, but your team also needs to produce those minutes for you. I think that's what mitigated his ability to get more money and term. Poor development and giving players actual opportunities have been just as much of a problem for us over the years.
insomniac604
This deal seems about right. But it makes you wonder why it took this long? Ottawa hates spending money but after shipping out Zib, this was an obvious decision. Still won't make them a competitor. It's been proven so many times over. If you want to win, you need to spend to the cap. But spending to the cap doesn't necessarily get a win. Just a chance you HAVE to take.
