-Vintage Canuck-
Quote Nashville, Tenn. (July 25, 2016) – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced Monday that the club has signed defenseman Matt Carle to a one-year, $700,000 contract. Carle, 31 (9/25/84), is a veteran of 724 NHL contests, amassing 282 points (45g-237a) with San Jose, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay. The 6-foot, 197-pound blueliner helped his club advance to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015 with the Lightning, and with Head Coach Peter Laviolette's Flyers in 2010. The Anchorage, Alaska, native played three seasons for Laviolette from 2009-12, posting 35 points or more each campaign, and has spent the past four seasons with Tampa Bay, most recently notching nine points (2g-7a) in 64 games in 2015-16. Carle was a 2007 NHL All-Rookie Team selection and YoungStars Game participant, posting a career-high 42 points and 11 goals during his first full season with the San Jose Sharks in 2006-07. San Jose's fourth selection, 47th overall (second round), in the 2003 NHL Draft held in Nashville spent three seasons at the University of Denver from 2003-06, winning national titles in 2004 and 2005, and winning the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's top player in 2006. The two-time NCAA All-American and 2003 USHL Defenseman of the Year also won gold medals at the 2002 World Under-18 Championship and 2004 World Junior Championship, as well as a bronze medal at the 2012 World Championship, where he played with Predators forward Craig Smith and was coached by Assistant Coach Phil Housley. http://predators.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=890102
Crackers
It's been a busy day for signings. Seems like good value for a serviceable depth defenseman.

Apple Juice
1 year 700k contract? Given his play of recent years, that's a steal. Probably just a "prove to me that you can still play" kind of contract.

Bought out Jackman to bring in these guys? Good GM, but makes some odd micro-moves.
mll
Weber just got some competition - Carle, Granberg, Bitetto and maybe even Irwin. It's Laviolette that called up Carle to convince him to sign with Nashville.
Jägermeister
He's had 1 1/2 pretty underwhelming years, but he's only 31 and is reuniting with the coach he saw his best years under. I'd say this is a pretty low-risk/high-reward contract for the Preds to give out. Worst case they "waste" 700k on a depth d-man, best case he's a bargain top 4 D. Most likely isn't going to be anything spectacular, but definitely a good risk to take.

If I'm a Preds fan (which I'm not), I'd be pretty happy about the Carle signing. I'd take Matt Carle on the 50-man roster at 700K any day of the week. If ever there was a money-ball move, this one is it.

Doesn't really matter too much when you fleece Montreal for one of the biggest names in hockey for an ageing veteran. Wouldn't judge him on these tiny signings, judge him on the monster Subban deal. Irrelevent. And derp. You clearly whiffed on the "Good GM" part in your pointless attempt to caution me not to judge him on a micro-signin But the fact you call a Shea Weber return getting "fleeced" suggests you're the one here who is quick to weak judgements - and swallow too much Yost-type nonsense. He's trying to resurrect his career under a coach where he had his best years in Philly. If he does well, possibly another team will pick up him in free agency next year. Otherwise, they can just not re-sign him and let him go. It's a cheap 1 year deal. It's not like it was 4 years. It's just one. If he doesn't work out, they can just waive him.
