They had an initial offer from Dallas and countered, then Dallas took that offer to Calgary and the Flames upped the second to a conditional first and Dallas took it.  They intended to get Russell all along, not Hamhuis, and paid more to get him.

Sorry but your false narrative is old and stale.

read what you just wrote..... they had the offer from Dallas and countered ...... ( thats what i said) , then they went to calgary with the offer who accepted it........

there is nothing false about what i wrote since you pretty much said the same thing. Dallas wanted Hamhuis which is why they came back and made another offer for Hamhuis and is also obvious since they made him a top priority when it came to UFA signings.

The funny thing is, the only people who ever defend JB when it comes to last years deadline are some fans on here, otherwise every panelist or expert gave JB a thumbs down for his inability to get anything done

You did not listen nor read.  Calgary UPPED the offer.  Dallas took the Canucks' offer and shopped it to Calgary, for the player they actually wanted.

If their (Dallas) intent was in fact Russell, why is Russell still a free agent and Hamhuis signed with the Stars? Don't you think they would want to resign the player they gave up assets for...

So you're premise is that they voluntarily gave up assets for a player that had no real interest in...?

Doesn't make much sense alright.  They could have got Hamhuis for less than Russell (offer was on the table) so what other reason would there be for going with Russell over Hamhuis except that they wanted him more?  Maybe now they realize they made a mistake, or perhaps Russell was asking too much to re-up.

I believe they had interest in a defender, and after balking at Vancouver's asking price for Hamhuis they decided Russell would be their next best option. After seeing how underwhelming Russell was (even though given big minutes) down the stretch and playoffs, they cut their losses and signed the guy they really wanted

It seems like it did turn out to be a mistake.  Russell didn't do much to change their fortunes but they couldn't know that at the time.

Every reputable hockey commenter including Bob Mackenzie said that Dallas wanted Russell and Hamhuis was plan B.  I know it is hard for some people to accept that a deal just wasn't there to be had in spite of every bit of evidence suggesting it.  Them making a lowball (mid to late round pick was reported) offer with 5 minutes to go before the trade deadline doesn't prove they were intent on Hamhuis all along.

I think they realized they made a mistake, along with the reported 5 mill per Russell was originally asking for (media speculation) probably weighed in on the decision.

GMs, even the most successful, make mistakes.  Maybe, Nill wanted Hamhuis, but the owners got involved?  Maybe, Nill just made a mistake in his valuation of the two players?  Maybe there was a deal to be had before Nill went for Russell, but the Canucks price was too high?  We will never know the honest truth.
