They're basically signing year to year leases until they move in. It was a move out of desperation though, and they've been desperate for several years. Edmonton got top draft picks because the NHL still owed them for the Gretzky trade (Bettman even said that the trade brought credibility to NHL in the United States) and more recently because Edmonton approved a new arena. Tell you what - if neither Las Vegas nor Arizona end up with the top draft pick next year (for example, Vancouver wins), then remind me, and I'll make sure to post how wrong I was.
