Why do people hate Toronto?

smokes

Recommended Posts

I was listening to the Sullivan bacshing of Vancouver then listened in on Blake Price assessing why the fans and certain people have a dislike for Toronto whether it may be politics, the people or the sports. I got to being curious. If you have a dislike for Toronto, why?

I dislike them because in my mind, the Federal government sees Toronto as a number one priority compared to Vancouver, I dislike the fact that by the time the Elections reaches British Columbia, it's usually over.I dislike the fact that we got our baketball team ripped out of our hands while they still have thiers. (Envy, I know) What are you reasons?

I don't hate Toronto per se. What I hate is how they view themselves as New York North. And they think Toronto IS Canada. Without appreciating that others in the country might have different views than they do. Montreal is a cooler, much more European flavour of a city, that still has it's Canadian Identity.

In fact it's Alberta that I really worry about. I think it has to do with a lot of American, and yes Texan influence due to its long history of oil and gas industry. Yes despite this we are all our distinctly Canadian. As a whole we're more compassionate, more closer to nature, and under our jaded exteriors, we give more.

And the most of the country have our national religion of Hockey. We also have a more land centric patriotism than our flag. We love our parks, lakes, oceans, and nature and love to play and enjoy it. We don't have the American hyper-patriotism. You know groups chanting "USA! USA!". But you screw with Canadians. We will quietly plot our revenge and wait for a chance to level you into the boards. :P

The eastern population being much higher than the western one is the reason elections are usually decided by the time votes are counted out here. No surprise, no big deal.

I personally don't give a flying hoot what Patrick O'Nobody feels about my team, my coast, or my fellow fans. I happen to enjoy the east coast of Canada and have many friends from there. The main reason I dislike Toronto is not because of the Leafs, Raptors, Jays, the federal government, the Ontario provincial government, or the fact I can fly somewhere sunny for cheaper than I can fly there right now, rather it's the media bias that pisses me off.

West coast > Toronto all damn day on my books.

I grew up pretty much exactly half way between Toronto and Detroit. Any major concert tour during that time stopped in either city, skipping mine because of the lack of a suitable venue. After attending many in Toronto I began heading to Detroit to see them and never looked back.

Combine this with the fact that EVERYONE at that time was a Leafs fan, I quickly became a fan of Detroit and its teams.

I don't dislike the Leafs per se as I don't mind them as a team (pre-Babcock days, when Kessel and Phaneuf were on the team) and I don't have a certain hatred for them... It's the fans logic thinking they're the centre of the universe, the biased media from TSN and Sportsnet, and that the NHL favours them more than any other Canadian team.

Seriously, when TFC beat Montreal just a few days ago, the broadcasters couldn't hold back their smiles and excitement when they were doing the highlights

I don't mind the Leafs at all. I think they have a good, up and coming team. But, if they are in the Canucks' way, then I will always want them to lose. They can win every other game for all I care.

I'm a fan of all the Canadian teams.

Besides sports, I don't hate or love Toronto as a city. I've never been there, though.

I left BC when I was 17. And other than a small timeframe living back there, the rest of my 52 years has been spent in the great State of Alberta. We are Texas North...the money, the attitude (I've even seen a few confederate flags flying around here). Most Albertans claim to be Uber-Canadian (massive Canada Day patriotic parties...a la July 4th type celebrations)...but I don't believe there to be a greater destructive (underlying) force to Canadian unity than Alberta as a whole. That Texas attitude (if Quebec wants to separate "let 'em go...and take the Maritimes with you!") and "if it's time to split up the country then we'll take [insert province's name] with us". With us? And why would Albertans be interested in splitting up Canada? Protect their precious oil rights...and their disdain for Eastern politics. I think if we had any say in it over here, a lot of Albertans would have voted Trump...we are the Uber-right in Canada.

I don't know what claim does Alberta have to be called "Heartland". IMO, and based on our country's history, the "Heartland" of this country should be the St. Lawrence River area. That is where our federation began. Along Lake Ontario and the river is where we defeated the Americans in 1812, where we found our first colonies, etc. etc.

What does this "Heartland" BS come from? Some romantic idea that the "Heartland" is the geographical middle of the country? There is no real rational argument behind it.

Thanks AB, you confirmed an observation of friends who either moved to Calgary, or vacationed in BC in the interior that I met. What I find is interesting is Saskatchewan and Manitoba, is where I say the "Heartland" of the country is. I think you'll find very humble, hard working folk there. One thing about Canada.

Isn't there a socialist government in Alberta now?  Plus, that's a girlie name - Alberta.

Anyone in BC, who does not hate Toronto, should be forced to leave.  Except for Mrs. Alf, of course.

Alberta? The most disgusting province in Canada.  The tar sands pit of our Country. Very sad the greed of money will destroy out planet.

I don't dislike Toronto the city. I lived there before, I like the city. I even cheer for the Raptors and the Blue Jays, something that you won't be able to do if you dislike the city.

I just dislike the Maple Leafs and their antics like intentionally sending a goon to go after our rookie and their lack of respect shown to their opponents as can be seen from that blindside hit to Daniel.

The game starts at 4pm today - That sums it up for me.  For decades Ive endured our national media outlets pandering to and slobbering over anything Toronto.

When they do a Toronto vs ANY other CANADIAN team broadcast you get the sense that the other team is in a foreign country.  Ive seen Canuck game pre-empted by meaningless blue jays games, Ive watched Doug Gilmour get kissed on live TV by CBC hosts, and listened to broadcast teams practically openly cheer for the laffs in the playoffs. In the old days we would get like 20 weekend laff games and maybe 6 Canuck games. There are too many examples to bring up.

Also, lets not forget that the leafs have been horrible for a decade.  Now that they are improving - watch out ...the love fest is going to get elevated to a new level. It will be like the early 90s again.  Watching two leaf muppets singing to a bon jovi song 100 times in the sports highlights is just the beginning.

I dont hate the team that much, its the fact that the team is shoved down Canada's throat that makes me dislike Toronto.

It's not so much that I hate the city and general population, but god damn do I ever hate Toronto fans and the Toronto media. There is no team I hate more, although Edmonton is a close second. Their whole "center of the universe" thing rubs a lot of Canadian hockey fans the wrong way. Their biased media that's supposed to cover Canada in general, their passive (and often not so passive) aggression towards the Canucks/BC, their inflated sense of importance and what they get away with due to being an NHL darling. Remember the Sedin tampering? How they were in game aggressors and will be hiding behind the league tonight? Their whole trying to be New York north, it's bs. They aren't even the best place in Canada to visit. Montreal has em beat easily. I'm tired of having Toronto and their crappy team shoved down our throats. That goes for Edmonton and darling McDavid too.

Toronto is trash and the Toronto media is a bunch of sycophants. Even the transplants.
