DownUndaCanuck
What a game, didn't look pretty but this was a beautiful team defensive game and obviously a pretty goal by Henrik. On the whole, we played as a defensive 5 man unit to perfection, perfect neutral zone game against another team pretty good in the neutral zone and defensively stood up at the blueline really well. 1) Henrik and Daniel were actually pretty average tonight. Missed a lot of passes, a few bad giveaways and only generated one or two good offensive chances but that was a massive, important goal to tie the game and obviously a huge milestone goal, and a pretty one too. Daniel missing the empty net was ugly too. They weren't good for the most part of tonight. Eriksson looked strong in all 3 zones tonight though, some nice passes, some bad misses but fantastic along the boards and defensively. At least now when the Sedins are bad, they've got a defensive specialist on their line to make sure they're not getting scored on. One thing Henrik did really well though was defending man-on-man against Jagr which, apart from the hooking penalty, he did really well. 2) Bo and Baertschi had some lovely chances but are getting a bit too pretty and could have easily had 2 or 3 goals tonight. Burrows chances weren't as high-end but he generated a lot of offence out of nothing. Most importantly, the trio were sound defensively and got the puck out of the D-zone very easily. 3) Sutter had a lot of good chances, played well defensively too, deserved a goal. Megna and Granlund didn't have a fantastic game but still a couple of good rushes here and there. 4) Our fourth line IMO played another solid game. They get one or two B-grade chances a game but are hard to play against and play mostly in the offensive zone, cycling and not producing much but keeping the play away from their own net. They weren't really hemmed in ever either. 5) This game was won by our defence. They were a mis-match all night long playing with all sorts of different partners but everyone got it done. They've bought into the system and they're making it work. Giving up lots of shots but almost no high-end chances. Shots from the outside, rebounds get cleared up easily or swallowed by Miller. This is how you win in the playoffs and the Canucks are starting now. Edler was fantastic all night long, started slow but every time he was on the ice it was an easy clear. Stecher had one of his worst games as a Canuck, looks like he might still be sick because his passes weren't as good and he was out of position at times. Tanev was fantastic, nice and solid but not much offence, and obviously Sbisa had one of his best all-round games of the season. Perfect passes, nice skating, nice elusive skating in the D-zone and two great shots, one leading to the GWG. This guy is a bonified top-4 defenceman in the NHL and these last 2 seasons have been his coming out party. Hidden in all of this is how well Biega played tonight, but also Tryamkin who's skating, passing, shooting and obviously physical play is rounding out to become a fantastic all-round defenceman. His potential is through the roof and as he continues to improve every single game, I'm scared how good he might be coming into training camp next year to be a full time 20 minute defenceman. 6) Obviously Miller was strong, sound positioning and really didn't let up any rebounds. Unlucky on the Jagr goal, that was the PK's fault 7) PK struggled against a terrible powerplay tonight and the PP was brutal. We need to fix these obviously and in a BIG way. For the PK I think we're close but on the powerplay we need some major changes. I say play the Sedins with Horvat in front of the net, Edler and Stecher on the point and focus on point shots. 8) Coaching-wise, this is a big win for WD. He gets a lot of scrutiny but in these last 10 or so games since the break we've been playing very similarly to how the 06-07 Canucks played. Tight checking as a 5 man unit, good defence from the forwards, not much gap, rarely have a defenceman sneak into the offence but never let up odd-man rushes. Sound defence. That's how we're winning, that's how we won at the start of the season and that's how we're going to have to play to beat the big teams of the West as well. This is how teams play in the playoffs and similar to how the Kings a few years ago won a Cup, if we can continue this roll into the playoffs we may surprise some teams, especially the more offence-minded teams. We know we can beat anyone in our Division and with this defence, if Miller or Markstom get really hot we can sneak past one of the rubbish Pacific teams, especially Calgary or Edmonton in a first round matchup where defence is never a priority. TL;DR - good signs, mainly from a coaching and team-defence stand point. The forwards played hard on the cycle and checked back nicely but we won this game in the neutral zone and standing up Florida at the defensive blueline. It's how we've beaten the better forwards in the past and it looks like the team is buying into this team-defence mentality because it's getting us some big-time wins. Beary Sweet
That was a one hell of a game. not because of the action but because of Hank's milestone of hitting 1k and the 1st player in Canucks franchise history to do so. On top of that, he and his brother are getting in a bit of roll, with points in 2 straight. Miller, what can I say, was a rock tonight and deserved a shutout. Nevertheless, he was a big part of why we got 2 points tonight. Also Pizza with the sick lil wrister. He knew where to put that and put it top chesee with some extra cheese with it as well. Bo also was a warrior, coming back after getting hit by Tram's 100+ km/h shot. Unreal. Heart of a Canuck. Stecher also had a strong game though he was fighting just to get through this game with some sort of an injury on his leg, and to top that off, he might've had the flu as well. Real nice job to work hard out there both offensively and defensively. Overall, it was a great game but this game was all about Hank and he's been a class act and really made me and I'm sure most of you also really emotional. Hope the boys keep this up. We're on our way to a wild card spot. GCG!
