To me the biggest difference between the two finals was we led in the Boston series and were the favourites and we trailed 3-1 and were playing the best team in the league against the Rangers.  Clawing back and then winning game six so authoritively and given the media wouldn't shut up about how long NYR hadnt won a cup gave the sense we were going to beat them.  Boston it seemed obvious we had lost the series before game seven even though we led the series entering game seven.  The other thing about Boston we were the better team the best team in the league and it felt like we would have two or three more chances .... Ugh .   They bothed sucked and even after going through it twice before (NYI wasn't as bad given the brooming) it doesn't get any easier.

Given that I've been a fan since the first Canucks season, I have many painful memories (but I'm still a loyal Canucks fan).  Here are my biggest disappointments:

  1. Seeing the Canucks' very ordinary 1970 Stick in Rink logo in comparison to the Buffalo Sabres cool logo (they also joined the NHL in 1970) and uniforms.
  2. Losing the first overall pick in the 1970 NHL Entry Draft to the Sabres (Sabres got Gilbert Perreault and we got Dale Tallon - Tallon was good but Perreault was great).
  3. Seeing the 1978 sweaters with the big V logo (they were just awful).
  4. Being swept in 4 games in the 1982 Stanley Cup to the Islanders.
  5. Losing Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Final to the Rangers.
  6. Seeing Marty McSorley hit Donald Brashear on February 21, 2000.
  7. Seeing Todd Bertuzzi hit Steve Moore on  March 8, 2004 (while I wanted Moore to pay for hitting Naslund in a previous game, this was brutal to watch).
  8. Losing Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final to the Boston Bruins.
  9. Seeing Torts go crazy when he tried to go after Bob Hartley.

Luc Bourdon dying was the worst.. Had we made the playoffs that year he wouldn't of been back home riding his first motorcycle when he was .. still would of been in Vancouver with the Canucks and all else could of been much much different. Hamhuis injury in final on Lucic hit n Rome suspension etc all hurt our D in the finals.... Luc on our core would of been the difference maker for sure... sigh.. dude was our Kris Letang :(

My most painful memory of being a Canucks fan?

Being a Canucks fan for 47 years is my most painful memory - It's one long excrutiating period of sadomasochistic self-flagellation interspersed with brief moments of euphoric teasing only to fall back into the endless abyss of pain, penitence and humiliation.

Actually, this right now has to be right up there with one of the most painful memories of all time.

Our team's got the mumps - right before the deadline - and just inside the incubation period of the damn disease (meaning, every team will now be wary of making a trade with us for the next 7 or 8 days - unfortunately, we only have 4 days left to consumate any trades).  So, we are going to get absolutely fleeced.  The Sedins quit trying this year, so how long can it possibly be before they're gone?  And, what do we have to replace them with?  A big fat zero.  Nadda.  Zip.  Zilch.  Horvat and crickets.  The only two older/higher-paid players we have that actually try hard every game - are about to be shipped out the door.  And, when they go, we'll have absolutely nothing to replace them with either.  Oddly, if they don't get shipped out the door, that might be even worse.  And, speaking of worse...  We've been just about the worst team in the league for years now.  Our only competition in that area is Arizona - and they aren't even trying to win.  And, what did all that losing that get us?  Two measly lottery picks.  And, what did we turn those into?  An ECHL-quality player in Virtanen - and the opportunity to punch ourselves in the face by not taking Tkachuk.  After years of being one of the worst teams in the league, you'd think our prospect-cupboard would be full, right?  Not on your life!  Barer than a porn set.  Go look up our farm-team's line-up!  That's not an AHL line-up, folks.  That's ECHL-quality too.  Although, that might be an insult to the ECHL.  I'm sure even they don't want to be associated with Virtanen...  After years of sucking THAT is what our farm-team looks like???  What kind of horrible dream is this???  Right, one where we've got 5 more years of Loui at one of the highest salaries in the league...  We are almost certainly going to finish around 28th this year - and just watch us drop two positions in the draft again.  Our defense is in shambles.  If it wasn't for two rookies, just imagine where we'd be today!  Unfortunately, neither of them have as much upside as you'd hope.  Once Miller's gone, our goal-tending could become quite the issue (the prospects we have aren't even close to ready yet).  Everywhere you look, you see nothing but extremely disturbing things.

Our team is in deep, deep, deep, deep trouble right now.  Our future looks bleaker than it's possibly ever looked.  Even the 70's and 80's had a little bit of hope.  It's hard to hold out much hope today.  Maybe by the mid-2020's...

Great Post and yes isn't it ironic that thru the last few management "shake-ups" they canned the G.M., President, Coaches - BUT- kept the absolutely abysmal team scouts that have a solid 45 year history of complete failure.   The entire scouting staff should be hung out to dry.  A 5 y.o. could make better picks than them!

Many of the bigger ones have been posted already, some of the more underrated losses:

2004 WCQF Game 7 vs. Calgary: losing that game in overtime right after Cooke tied it with 5 seconds left killed me a bit inside. The WCE just wasn't the same after that season (with the Bertuzzi incident and all).

2009 WCSF Game 6 vs. Chicago: It wasn't a game 7, but they had the lead in the third period twice and blew it both times. Patrick Kane scoring a hat trick and having to listen to Chelsea Dagger 7 times also didn't help.

Watching the latte sipping morons rioting.  Full stop.

That hurt the most.

I could deal with the team losing in game 7. I was proud to see the team make it that far.

But the riots made me ashamed that i was a canucks fan, it didn't make it as fun anymore after that. Like that unspoken dark cloud hanging above this team and fanbase.

I have only been a hard core fan of the Canucks since 2010 so there aren't many but here is my top 5 during the time I am fan:

1). 2011 Stanley Cup Final Games 6 & 7 (win either of those games we would of have a Cup)

2). 2012 Playoffs: Winning the 2nd straight President's trophy got my hopes up, especially how weak other teams were that year and thought it would be our best chance for the Cup and then that crap happen with the Kings running us out in 5 games and they went on for their first cup win. Hated the Kings ever since

3). 2016 Draft Lottery Night: how we fell from 3rd to 5th position

4). 2014 Second Half of the Season: it was a gong show, the team was not a happy team and it was very stressful to watch guys go down in injuries losing game after game adn of course with the Kesler demanding a trade fiasco and Torts

5). 2015 Round 1 Game 6: we literally have the game in the bag after the first 10 minutes and could of force a potential game 7 on home ice, but we slowly choked this one away and never hear the end of it from those stupid fans in Calgary

It's worse than that.

We will likely finish 28th, then get dropped to 4th best lotto odds with the addition of Las Vegas.

And then we will probably drop 3 more places on lotto day when teams behind us (with worse odds) get lucky...

to end up ultimately picking 7th!

And then we won't pick BPA.

Seeing the Sedins lay over and die in the 2011 cup series. I mean combine for 5pts in 7 games???

Then to see the fanbase run Lou out of town...Vancouver should have ran those two out. But I guess Art Ross trophies are more impressive than cups. 23 players win a cup every year, only 1 wins the Art Ross usually.
