(Discussion) 10 Potential Top-6 Forward Targets

Recommended Posts

With the rumours that Benning could be looking to acquire a "young" top-6 forward in exchange for defence, I thought it would be a good idea to assess some potential top-6 forwards that we could conceivably be interested in. For this list, I have expanded the definition of a "Top 6 Forward" to any player who is currently producing at, has shown they can produce, or is expected to produce at a level consistent with second line numbers or above (>40Pts). Furthermore, all players must qualify as young enough to fit within Benning's emerging core of players, so we will set the age range from 19-26 in order to satisfy this requirement. It is important to note that this is not an exhaustive list of players and does not accurately reflect the availability of said players on the open market. However, I feel this list should spark some discussion on the matter and, ideally, more players will be added by fellow members in that discussion

Disclaimer: This is merely conjecture and personal opinion for the most part. I think there are some players here who could be on the Canucks' radar, and some of them are absolutely not. It is also worth noting that I haven't taken into consideration cap hits or expansion draft elgibility.

That being said, here are the 10 trade targets I have identified.

1.)

Evander Kane

Verdict - Plausible : Evander Kane embodies everything the Canucks are seeking in a potential trade. He's young, plays a powerful game, and is a bonafide scorer at the NHL level. Coupled with the reported interest that the Canucks have had in Kane in the past, it would be plausible to conclude that he is still on their radar, if only in the periphery. However, opponents of a Kane trade highlight his off-ice behaviour and on-ice inconsistencies as major obstacles in any negotiations, and with his recent resurgence in production this season, it would be a safe bet to assume his price is much higher than the Canucks would be willing to pay.

2.)

Matt Duchene

Verdict - Highly Highly Unlikely: As arguably the hottest commodity on the trade market, Colorado's asking price for Matt Duchene would most certainly be astronomical, and rightly so. He's 26, a two-time all-star, and an Olympic gold medalist. The skillset and production levels that Duchene sports are definitely that of a top line centre, a vacancy the Canucks will almost certainly be looking to fill in the next few season. However, although Colorado could be in the market for a young d-man such as Ben Hutton, the likelihood that the Canucks would be willing to add significantly to a package surrounding Hutton, that could include multiple picks and/or blue chip prospects, is extremely unlikely given their current roster makeup and "re-tooling" phase.

3.)

Tomas Hertl

2016-17 San Jose Sharks NHL 28 6 9 15 12 0

Verdict - Highly Unlikely: Remembered for his four-goal performance against the Rangers in 2013, particularly for the audacity of the between-the-legs goal that capped it off, Tomas Hertl has been on the back burner of the league's attention for the majority of the period that has followed. In that time, however, Hertl has solidified himself as a young player who can put up scoring-line numbers in the NHL. He has decent size, great speed, and a toolbox full of dynamic abilities that would make him an asset on almost any team in the league. But with the Sharks gearing up for another lengthy run in the post-season, it is hard to envision a scenario in which Hertl would not be in the shark tank come March 1st. himself as a young player who can put up scoring-line numbers in the NHL. Verdict - Highly Plausible: Although Grigorenko has yet to put up anything more than 27 points in a season, his age and high-end skillset could be enticing for Benning & co. Unlike the other proven scorers on this list, Grigorenko's price tag, as more of an unrefined talent, would be decidedly lower. This could favour the Canucks as Benning has demonstrated in the past a penchant for reclamation projects (see Sven Baertschi and Markus Granlund), but this time around trader Jim may opt for a more sure fire pick for his forward corps.

5.)

Tomas Tatar

2016-17 Detroit Red Wings NHL 59 14 14 28 20 -7

Verdict - Unlikely, but conceivable: Tomas Tatar has spent much of this season on Detroit's first line along with captain Henrik Zetterberg and a spate of other wingers, most recent of whom is Anthony Mantha. As a scoring winger, the Slovak-born Tatar has forged a permanent place within the Red Wings' top-6, and in addition to this has demonstrated an excellent two-way game as well. With Detroit seemingly in the market for a skilled two-way defenseman, it would be safe to assume their interest would be piqued by the likes of Alex Edler or Ben Hutton, both of whom would fill a need for the Wings. However, with Tatar playing such an integral role for Detroit, it would make sense for the Canucks to add to any package involving Hutton or Edler, which is something that would require the relinquishing of precious draft picks (which Benning may be unwilling to part with).

6.)

Anthony Duclair

Left Wing -- shoots L
Born Aug 26 1995 -- Pointe-Claire, PQ

2016-17 Tucson Roadrunners AHL 12 1 7 8 4 -6

Verdict - Plausible: Much like Grigorenko, Duclair's place on this list has everything to do with potential and little to do with credentials. We can make the argument that Duclair's eye opening 2015-16 campaign is enough proof to warrant the title of top-6 forward, but his 9 points in 41 games this season, along with a demotion to the AHL for development, would suggest he is not yet ready to produce at this level on a consistent basis. That being said, Duclair would fit nicely into the Canucks' emerging core of young forwards and may serve well as a complimentary linemate of rising centres such as Bo Horvat or Markus Granlund.

7.)

Ondrej Palat

Left Wing -- shoots L
Born Mar 28 1991 -- Frydek-Mistek, Czech Rep.
[25 yrs. ago]
Height 6.00 -- Weight 188 [183 cm/85 kg]

2016-17 Tampa Bay Lightning NHL 51 11 17 28 27 -2

Verdict - Highly Unlikely: Palat's current season is a hiccup in an otherwise stellar start to his NHL career. He has already managed to break the 60 point plateau (in 2014-15) and looks certain to replicate this in the future given the right linemates. Tampa is highly unlikely to give up Palat seeing as he is playing first line minutes with Johnson and Kucherov in Stamkos' absence, but he is the type of player the Canucks will want to acquire in the foreseeable future in order to bolster their burgeoning youth movement.

8.)

Victor Rask

Center -- shoots L
Born Mar 1 1993 -- Leksand, Sweden

2016-17 Carolina Hurricanes NHL 55 13 19 32 8 -7

Verdict - Highly Unlikely: Playing top line minutes on most nights in Carolina, Victor Rask has shown that he can be deployed in all situations and can produce at a top line level. Although he has found a resting place next to Aho and Lindholm, Rask's value lies in his versatility, and it for this reason that Carolina will be reluctant to let him go. And with the Canucks' biggest trading chips being defencemen, this would further complicate things as Carolina is deep on the blueline with Hanifin, Slavin, and recent all-star Faulk just to name a few.

9.)

Jordan Eberle

Right Wing -- shoots R
Born May 15 1990 -- Regina, SASK

2016-17 Edmonton Oilers NHL 59 12 23 35 12 0

Verdict - Unlikely: Jordan Eberle's reputation at this point in his career precedes him. Eberle has demonstrated his ability to put the puck in the net at a significant rate, even on an Edmonton team that was bereft skill and direction at the outset of his career. It's no secret that Edmonton would have to strengthen their blueline if they are keen on becoming legitimate contenders anytime soon, but that would, unfortunately, mean that the Canucks would have to part with Chris Tanev or a package including Ben Hutton in order to land a player of Eberle's calibre. Although he would undoubtedly help the Canucks in the now and the future, the price to acquire him may be more than management is willing to dish out.

10.)

2016-17 Colorado Avalanche NHL 47 11 12 23 46 -16

Verdict - Highly Unlikely: The Captain of the Avalanche, along with team-mate Matt Duchene, has drummed up a lot of interest heading into the trade deadline. It is hard to imagine a scenario where Landeskog winds up on the Canucks, but, as with any player on this list, it all depends on the amount you're willing to pay to land their services. Whilst Canuck nation rightly would rejoice in Gabe's arrival, they may think twice when they see the players/picks going the other way.

What do you guys think of the 10 players mentioned? Do you agree/disagree with my assessment? What players would you expect Jim Benning to pursue in the next week?

We need to find this year's version of Drouin and Kane.

Everyone was worried about their attitude but I didn't care because their value was at an all time low for young elite players and we can always work with them on their behavior around the rink, even though it doesn't hurt to have a couple cocky piece of s**** on the team.

Now, just to be clear, I'm not saying we have to search for players with bad attitudes, rather, find some players who are slumping or just in a bad situation and bring them in to a place to succeed.

I would try for Grigorenko and Duclair to see if they can be had for cheap and hope they can turn it around like Bae and Granny.

Its known they need a Dman on the right side. Tanev would probably be a starting point.

Is Domi's down year a function of ailing health? Maybe his diabetes is a concern?  Is there a risk?

Just injured Mr.Alf. No more of a risk than Tanev. I think its a good trade. He would be one of my first options i would look into.

I'm all for buying low on Grigorenko and Duclair after the expansion draft has taken place, no point getting either of them before since the team will have enough forwards to protect as is.  As well, I'd say yes to getting Duclair if it means management isn't sold on Virtanen moving forward, since both those young guns have offensive potential and I'd say no to getting Anthony if Jake finally shows signs of coming into his own.

Would be nice to swap for Mikhail with one of our non-exempt D-men (Sbisa?).  The Av's fan site did say that they want to add to their 21-year-old core but it makes no sense for Vancouver to trade say, Hutton for a guy who 1) again needs protection and 2) hasn't come into his own as a center when the team should be looking to shore up the offense up the middle.  If the team could get both for a D-man and say a 2nd for Anthony I'd say that's a coup.

As of now, I don't see the other big-name guys coming over (Kane might be the exception in this case).  At least I hope management doesn't stupidly rip a hole in their young depth to get a big-ticket guy when the team as a whole isn't ready to contend yet.  P.S. props to OP for the effort to write his post.

Somewhere, somehow, JV is reading this, with a side grin slowly developing on his face. ;)
