Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the Canucks have signed 20-year-old defenceman Jalen Chatfield of the Windsor Spitfires to a three-year entry-level contract.

"Jalen is a good two-way defenceman that sees the ice well and makes good decisions in all three zones," said General Manager Jim Benning. "He moves the puck well and can join the rush. Jalen is another addition to our young prospect pool and we look forward to his continued development playing in Windsor."

In 60 games with the Windsor Spitfires this season, Chatfield ranks third among defenceman in points (28) and goals (8), and second in assists (20). His three power-play goals and two overtime goals lead Windsor defenceman. In his second OHL season in 2015.16, the 6-1, 187-pound defenceman collected 10 goals and 27 assists (10-27-37) in 68 games for the Spitfires. He also added two goals (2-0-2) in 5 playoff games.

A native of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Chatfield joined Windsor as a free agent in June 2014 and has suited up for 188 regular season games over three seasons, registering 86 points (19-67-86) and 136 penalty minutes.

Chatfield is a prototypical 2 way defenceman. He has average height but is slight in frame. He skates well, has a good stick and makes a good first pass. He will benefit on an improved Windsor team and should have a big year in 2015-2016. Makes it a bit more interesting viz. Neill and Olson.  Will they be signed as well, return as over-agers, or will we see some culling?

Pedan, McEneny and Nilsson will be RFA, Billins UFA.  Sautner, Subban, and Cederholm signed through next year.  Brisebois likely to end his contract slide.

Camp invite Jalen Chatfield is a Ypsilanti Michigan native who's currently playing with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. Before Jalen signed with the Spitfires as a free agent, he spent 2 seasons with the Belle Tire U-18 program in Detroit. He's described as an elite skating defenseman with good pucks skills who sees the ice extremely well and makes good decisions. He says he's an offensive player and likes to skate the puck up ice and join the rush. He's a right handed shot too, so the Wings should probably just sign him now. His coach says he's a good all-around player and his current projection is a two-way defenseman. He wasn't drafted into the OHL, and he wasn't taken in the NHL draft, but the Wings want to take a closer look at him and see if they think he's got some NHL potential.

Canucks have choice but to sign Olsen and Neill.  Olsen can be elligible again for this years draft, and Neill would become a UFA i believe by June 1st?

Have to wonder though whether the team management is pondering over that atm.

Probably a signing for Alaska. Doesn't really seem like he'll surpass any of our other D-men next year.

I don't think this is the big free agent D signing that we're waiting for.

All those players are free agents at the end of the season, as the Aces are closing shop.
