This injury does not surprise me.

I like Granlund, but prior to this season, he had never played over 59 games in a season (NHL + AHL combined) due to the injuries that he seems to receive EVERY season.

Lots to like about him, but he has proven to be fragile.

True enough it's a tough conference to play.

astute observation thanks for posting .I really wanted to see him get 20 goals. It would have been nice consolation to see another young guy cap 20 goals.

This injury nag was always in back of my mind but could never bring this point too surface in expansion protection discussion forums.

thanks again

Well yeah IMO if Sutter is not playing hurt then 4.375 million for a player supposedly in his prime, @ 29 points, and a supposedly defensive specialist @ -18

yeah thats like my opinion dude.

I think given his line mates for most of the season he has done pretty well.

He takes most of his face-offs in the D zone (13th in the NHL) and is our best FO specialist at 55% (19th in the NHL) He is also 16th best on the road in the NHL. So yes, defensively he is crucial to us going forward.

If we are going to talk about value for money then there are at least 2 players who should be examined before him.

Why didn't the canucks elect to correct this with surgery last spring. I think that's the bigger question I would like to hear the answer to.

I mean if it's been an issue for a while.....why would you even let the player have a say. Your paying him he should undergo any procedure if it will help his long term career.

My guess is it's something (like carpal tunnel?) that rest could have possibly addressed but, in having to play and continue with the repetitive moments that can further aggravate it, it now requires surgery.

I don't think they'd have a player play THROUGH injury that needed surgery, unless we were battling for a playoff spot.  Which, perhaps that was part of at one point (players/teams do that).

Fragile?  The fact that he was playing through something refutes this.  It's a tough game, except to those watching from home.  I'd say this is a bit of an exaggeration and rather dramatic.

True but last spring it was already lingering for a year or two. Oh well better to address it now and hopefully it fixes the issues he was having.

Next year a 20-25g 20-25a season is hopefully in the cards for him!

I like stories, but I like facts better, and this is a story lacking facts.

Fact: he's never played less than 59 games in a season, and has played more two of the past three years.

Thought it deserved a thread.

1040 and the province said that granlund addmited in an interview today he has been playing with "busted wrist ligaments," as he put it, since late october. 19 goals with that type of injury is pretty amazing.

Surgery is scheduled for Friday , and the recovery time is apparently between 3-5 months.

Get well soon granny

What are the implications of him playing through this kind of injury? I'm just worried about that.

Yeah I feel like I am more worried about the medical implications of repeated strain on a severe injury. And what is involved in that decision making process. Surely the Canucks have medical professionals in place to avoid situations where young players feel like they need to risk their long term performance and health in order to push through injury.

Torn ligaments are no joke. Granny is a trooper, but he needs a better judgement call there.
