I'm fine with costs.  It's "waste" that concerns me.  It's salaries for some in positions that have become redundant, but they're kept on board anyhow.  Because they can.

I didn't say no investment in transit...but I also don't want to funnel money into a bottomless pit and Translink has a lot of that.  My God, just review the history of some of it to see that in action.  Some dumb decisions are made and they cost all of us.

Deb, are you suggesting Trudeau "drains the swamp" of leeches?B)

Sure, and health care, education, etc.

I know you spent a lot of time in Japan.

All their JR lines are privatized and I believe a majority of their subways are the same.

IIRC, shares of JR West pays about 4% in dividend annually, so surely they are doing something right.

Obviously the same system cannot be implemented exactly the same, but there are tons of things all the transit organizations in Canada can replicate to make everything as a whole better.  Public accountability is the easiest thing to do and the best metrics to go by will be via external investors and financial statements.

Yeah yeah, translink is easy to bash. I could find fault in any large organization. Just build more trains, get more buses on the road. This helps with that.

There's lots of research on that, here's a brief article about it.

This is a great paper from one of the leading transportation planners out there.

Aspects of privatization could work, but I don't think we'd be any better off in the end given our geography among other aspects.

So why are we having a giant deficit of  $28 Billion when we no longer in a recession?   According to most economic theories, you spend when you are in a recession in order boost the economy.

Also, didn't Trudeau say that they will only have a deficit of $10 Billion each year?   Another broken promise.

Does this not seem self-defeating to anyone else? Spending over half a billion in tax money, to make sure people pay the government more taxes?

For every dollar spent, they recover $5.

What will happen (sadly) is WWIII.  It's not silly, because likely 90% of wars are fought over some economic principles, disguised in other ways, to justify the horror.

Maybe Trump/Bannon wants WWIII to solve the overpopulation problem. And the elites will be hiding in their bunkers and crawl out once it's over. (Geez, must be listening to Coast to Coast too often.)

They make it easy...and I don't buy into turning a blind eye because of a deflection.  You suggested putting money into Translink vs into our pockets.  I say start making better use of the money that is poured in.

And as multiple audits have shown, they are now very efficient. It's an easy thing to bash, but actually look into, it's now run much better. Relative to other transit agencies, it's very good. Perfect? Of course not, but that's reality.

That's on top of the $400 m they already spend.

I believe they're good when compared to other North American transit systems....... but that's hardly a high bar to be measured up with.

I think the "efficient" part is referred to the bus system only and the same(?) article mentions that the corporate side of Translink was inefficient.

There is almost no real good reason for Translink to remain government owned either than the socialist mantra that supposedly big-bad business will jack up prices and provide less service.  MTR, JR East/Central/West/etc, other Japanese private rail lines, etc.... they must be doing something right.  Why don't Translink ever try to emulate those models?  Vancouver needs to stop setting low standards.

Yeah, like when they privatized the ferries.  That sure worked out well for everyone.

The reason the ferries are a disaster is there is literally no alternative besides flight (which a lot of people are turning to) so they can set the price with little government interference. Build a bridge or perhaps a tunnel and the ferries suddenly become far less vital

Death knell to our beloved Orcas though. Everyone seems to forget our resident Killer Whales.

Noise pollution from the ferries hurts, but the US Navy sonar disruptions are worse than even building a bridge.

People know this right? Common sense I hope.
