(Discussion) 5th, 33rd and later picks

Recommended Posts

5th overall – Vilardi/ Mittelstadt/Glass

33rd overall – Hague/ Ratcliffe/ Lodnia/Bouwer

59th overall – Chekhovich /Cockerill / Lipanov

65th overall – Samberg / Martin

Preferred choices

3rd - Vilardi is the power forward this team needs, size and skill and a beast to try and knock of the puck,  unreal hands and strong two way game.  Style is a mix of Foppa and Tavares.  Can play wing and center.

33rd – I don’t think Hague drops, but if he does I'd take him, if not I’d go with the big 6’6” Ratcliffe.  54 points in 67 games this year, size, hits and has some soft hands to go along with it.  Could round into an important middle 6 player, (I’d say a Greenway comparable).

59th - Chekhovich is the dark horse, I’ve seen him ranked quite a bit lower but I’d be willing to take him as high as 59th.  He had a really good U18, put up a ppg in the Q this year (lead his team in points and goals),  He needs some more size but he has elite level skill and speed, never gives up on the puck (Datsyuk like take aways) and great vision.

65th – Samberg, an all-around D that is a heavy hitter, Won the Reed Larson award this year for the best HS senior defense man in the Minnesota state

I'm looking forward to seeing Vilardi at the Memorial Cup.  I'm a huge Mittelstadt fan but I know how much you like Vilardi and I trust your opinion.  I also have my eye on Ratcliffe at #33.  What do you think of Entwistle... he was more noticeable then Glass during the U18.  He is 6'3" and needs to fill out but could also be a great pick at #33.  I don't know much about Samberg, but if he is available at 65th he sounds like a great pick.  Chekhovich would be a steal regardless of the Russian factor... finished 2nd in scoring at the U18.  Will he make it to 59th?  If we get Columbus pick we could take him at 55-56?

At 5 i'm really ok with Mittelstadt, Vilardi or Glass,  Likely one (or possibly two) of those players will be gone by 5, so i'm ok with who we will get.  Memorial cup with be huge for Vilardi, he could really lock down a the number 3 spot or slip with a bad showing.  Entwistle was more noticable, but i don't know if he's got much offensive upside, I think he could be a good bottom 6 role player.

I'm hoping Chekhovich would still be there, i've seen mocks with him as high as 42 and as low as 102, it's really hard to pin point where players like that would go.  The russian factor is a bit scary after seeing Zuk and Tryamkin bolting back, but he's been in NA this last season.  The CBJ pick is an extra pick, so i'd be more than ok taking a small risk on Chekhovich with it if he's around.  He looked really good at the U18 and he actually had a really good year in the Q.  He's good top end hands, speeds and it relentless on the puck.

3.CASEY MITTELSTADT

For 33rd

1. MAXIME COMTOIS

2. MATTHEW STROME

3. MORGAN FROST

Intrigueing Option : STELIO MATTHEOS

Late round picks I'd like: EVAN BARRATT, REILLY WALSH, SANTERI VIRTANEN, DANIIL VOVCHENKO

Mittelstadt or Cal Makar

I also think we should take a year off drafting Russians but that's just me. Also one that is currently playing in the KHL, Faniil Vovchenko.

That's right.  Benning says he has a PPQB in his top 5.  Botch thinks it's Liljegren even though many have him out of the top 10 now.  The question is, who does he have for the other 2?

I'm guessing Villardi and Mittlestadt but since Benning puts so much stock in character, I have to think his final list will depend on how the players interview at the combine.

It could be Miro Heiskanen. But I expect the top D-man will be taken by Colorado at #4.

There are so many solid C's, which we desperately need. After taking the D-man last year, I sort of hope they go with a C. Then again, this rebuild is going to take time, and D's usually need more development time, so perhaps the smart long-term play is to grab a RHD?

Just seems so risky to me. I haven't scouted him as much as some of the other guys though, maybe I'm off base.

me neither, so I dont really know as well.  At this point id be as happy with anyone as long as they pan out.  Although it is less exciting for us fans right now, a stacked back end years from now would be a treat.

Yeah for sure. I just see Heiskanen as an all around Dman. I like my defenceman to be able to play a 2-way game. Liljegren seems like a PP specialist. If Heiskanen is gone I hope we take one of the centres left over.
