[Signing] Hurricanes re-sign G Scott Darling [4 year x $4.15M AAV]

The Carolina Hurricanes made the most of their time getting Scott Darling‘s bargaining rights, as they signed him to a whopper of a contract on Friday.

The team announced that they signed Darling to a four-year, $16.6 million deal. With that, Darling will generate a $4.15 million cap hit. The 28-year-old’s contract will run through the 2020-21 season.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the contract includes a limited no-trade clause.

Carolina sent a third-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks to get this exclusive window to negotiate with the goalie, so this was a pricey acquisition. It’s also a very proactive move by a franchise that’s really struggled in net for a long time.

“Obviously Scott could have waited until July 1, to see what other options he might have as an unrestricted free agent,” GM Ron Francis said. “But he believes in what we are trying to do here and we are thrilled that he is committing to the Hurricanes and to Raleigh.”

Still some questions to answer

At the moment, Darling joins three goalies under substantial contracts in Carolina, as Cam Ward carries a $3.3 million cap hit and Eddie Lack covers a $2.75 million cap hit in 2017-18. Between possible trades and the expansion draft, the Hurricanes have some work to do to try to remedy that logjam.

Darling’s work in Chicago indicates that he won’t face much of a battle for starts, although it’s plausible that playing for a quality team like the Blackhawks may have given him a boost. (See: Ray Emery in 2012-13.) Even so, it’s a bold move for a team that boasts a lot of the pieces you’d look for in a hopeful contender.

4yrs at 16.6million....seems kind of steep for darling.

He's the guy they just traded for right?

4 year contract when he's never played a game for them. They must really not like Lack.

Yea they just aquired him. Its safe to say lack is done with carolina and only a matter of time before all the lack supporters will want him back here.

New Talbot or Martin Jones?

Stat lines for season prior to being dealt and becoming a starter:

Darling: 18-5-5, 2.38 G.A.A., 0.924 save % last season

Talbot: 21-9-4, 2.21 G.A.A., 0.926 save % (12-6-1, 1.64 G.A.A, 0.941 save % in his first season!)
Jones: 12-6-0, 1,81 G.A.A, 0.934 save % (first NHL season)
Cory Schneider: 17-9-4, 2.11 G.A.A., 0.927 save %

I could see Lack going to Vegas.  They need to meet the cap floor anyway and for all the doubters about Lack's game, he should still be a solid backup and Vegas would only be committing to him for 1-year.

There was talk of MA Fleury going to Vegas.  That would not be a bad tandem to start with.  Both Gs would be very laid back, might be good for an expansion team.

Darling helped the Hawks to a Cup and did well again these past couple seasons. He's definitely worth the money, especially for a rising team like Carolina.

Didn't we do the same thing with Brandon Sutter :P

Not only did they give up a 3rd round pick for a soon to be UFA who has never been a starter, they go and throw more term and AAV than anyone else would have. Those are the kind of moves that will cost a GM his job if they don't pan out....

Wouldn't say he's worth the money necessarily. He's worth the gamble though, much like Talbot was.

Darling was on a LOT of radars. He was going to get this kind of money/term from someone.

Kudos to Carolina for getting ahead of the curb and locking him up. They desperately need steady goaltending.

Carolina isn't close to contending for playoffs anyways so they had to at the very least overpay for him to get him to sign

True but how many teams actually need a goalie? Not many. Dallas already has a ton of money tied up in their goaltending. Maybe they buy someone out? Phoenix is still on the hook for 2 more years on Mike Smith's contract. Who else does that leave? I guess LV but they shouldn't have a problem getting 2 decent goalies in the ED (MA Fleury?). So who was their competition?

He has put up some solid numbers with Chicago and Carolina feels that he could be the next Cam Talbot...worth the risk?  imo this is a massive overpayment and he will buyout candidate soon.

Darling could be the missing piece in Carolina if all goes well.  That team has everything besides consistent goaltending.
