[Discussion] First, Figure Out A Plan.

always makes me laugh when I see someone thinking there is no direction no matter how many times this teams lets people know what they are doing.

I just hope that people actually pay attention and listen and read where this team is and where they plan on going

or just play McD the way ANA did.

Yeah but McD is only 20. Give him 3 more years and he'll be unstoppable.

Fortunately he'll probably cost 14 million a season by then so the rest of the Oil will be complete crap.

maybe... but maybe not. He sucked along the boards when pushed to the outside, he never had to learn how to be strong that way and both SJS and ANA schooled him. He may pick that part of his game up but there's no guarantees actually since most of his game is built on speed. Thats why I think Matthews will ultimately be the better player.

Right I forgot about Cassels. lol

if Cassels can then why not Glass e.g.? McD is god like and all, but he was handled quite well in the playoffs. IMO he was knocked down a peg, he was far from dominant.

He's 20. Nobody is physically dominant at 20. He still scored 100 points. The playoffs are more intense, but if your logic is sound, why didn't he get shutdown during regular season.....? Playoffs aren't a completely different game.

5g 4a 9pts in 13 games considering the way he was matched up against is still pretty impressive kids 20.

you're making excuses for him? wait... isn't he supposed to be the 2nd best player after Crosby? Thats what the media tells me... I'm so confused...

he didn't get shut down in his last junior regular season either and Cassels kept him from the memorial cup.

Would you rather have a guy that was meh during the regular season that shows up for the real season or great regular season stats?

impressive? OK then. I think we have different definitions of impressive. I would suggest an objective view showed him to not be the best player on the ice but hey, lets not let results get in the way.

Now I didn't name any particular team when mentioning young and dynamic. Those ideas came from poster's own observations.

The system I described, the NJ model, yielded them a few cups and didn't rely on a superstar player, something that with the new lottery rules, could take quite a while for the Nucks to get. It doesn't required counting on finding a 50 goal scorer or stud dman, although with this system one will likely emerge.

Like I stated, Utica has been using the trap for 2/3 years now so there would be many players prepared for this system.

There is a much better chance to become "cup competitive" within 3 years this way, the expansion draft will offer up many opportunities to trade for a player that will/could be lost for a pick that doesn't need protecting it is also a period that some teams may want to do a salary dump like the Carolina and Chicago deal.

The team continues to play, keeps draft picks if they know they an get a NHL player, not merely "think" he could be reeeaaallll guuuud for the team at some time in the future, or not, sometime in the future. The European scouts should get a bonus for finding Tryamkin and Forsling.

Dahlen is either on the team or in Europe, he got a "Tryamkin" guaranteed NHL spot contract, he is also rather of slight dimensions. Now every team needs guys who can get points in the regular season just to get to the show, but is it enough to just get there now? A parade for a playoff appearance? If anything thing the NJ model excels in the playoffs when it tightens up even more.

Nothing wrong with getting three guys maybe like Silverberg, Montour or Armia for 2nd round picks.

Rebuild or no rebuild, re-tool or no re-tool, what matters is figuring out what the future could be like.

The youth stuff will come but will the team and owner be willing to suffer for a decade of trying to catch up to Edmonton and other young dynamic teams on the rise? They are so far behind after blowing three years that IMO there is only one way for them to attempt to be actually competitive for a cup run.

They will need to decide to go the New Jersey way, dull hockey but could quickly be effective without depending upon getting Sedin replacements.

They have the coach for this system as that is his system in Utica.

They will need to sign many large, fast players and many defensive defence men.

A system doesn't rely upon skill and creativity so much as adhering to smaller expectations, just do your job.

It is not as hard to find 9 forward players that can skate fast, hit, follow instructions and occasional scoring doesn't hurt but just about all NHL players were scoring machines in junior on their teams so 6 to 10 goals from each could be considered a win. The idea being that it is a defence first system so goals against drop considerably.

The hockey would be boring likely a 1-2-2 or a left side lock, dump and pray but it would/could have immediate results in competing against highly skilled players.

A big need would to be effective on the special teams PK and PP as the system would likely rely on PP goals to win with killing off penalties for hooking as the other team skates through the middle.

The defence in a system like this again would rely upon getting large, stay at home defencemen with maybe two that can move the puck or have an offensive flare. Again not real hard to do, the Nucks already have a few of those in Tanev, Sbisa, Pedan, Tryamkin, McKeneny ....with Stecher and maybe OJ adding the flare. OJ and Brisebois would likely end up in Utica for a season or two.

Looking at the Canuck prospects it appears that management has been going in this direction already with many dmen listed in the top 20 or so.

Now going this route is the simplest and easiest, it doesn't require a whole lot of work from management, no difficult trades, no genius drafting, no complex cap management, no replacing the Sedins, a really dumbed down type of team building, just keep rotating bottom 9 players through the roster until the ones that obey best are discovered.

Goalies in a system like this will look fairly good as long as they can stop the first shot.

With the expansion draft coming up there could be many of these types of players available, trading this years later round draft picks could yield far beyond what could be expected and the team will lose only one player regardless of how many they have or trade for. There will be many very good 3rd/4th liners made available.

So they need to decide witch way to go, but I think they already have.

Go for a second level NHL star from some team to help bolster the PP and doing nothing else except trade for expendable players in the expansion draft.

I really like the thread idea but disagree with some of your strategy.

My idea is to build a very talented defence that is really capable of clearing the puck out quickly. Juolevi, heiskanen, lilegren. If we can get these two defenceman this year that would be great . Instead of focusing on trying to get that bonifide number one center i would like to build a forward group that are a very strong two way presence on the ice. Kind of the type of player horvat is.  Sean couturier woyld be nice as well.  Have all four centers really strong two way players.

Although goldobin and dahlen may never fit what im talking about they could be the two exceptions and be pp specialists.  This is a team that wont score tons of goals but have enough puck possesion to score enough to win considering they will keep the puck out of there own end .
