What if Vegas takes Luongo?

Recommended Posts

With Florida exposing Luongo to protect Reimer, there is a chance Vegas takes Luongo.

Before that I was thinking Vegas would take Fleury and Subban as their goalies but now I'm debating who is more likely taking? Fleury or Luongo? It'll be interesting to see for sure.

If Vegas does take Luongo are we in the clear of that cap penalty for early retirement?

It'll be fun to see Louuuu 5-6x a year :)

Nope. It makes no difference to us, we're stuck with the original recapture no matter what. A little gift from Gary.

The only way we avoid it is if Lu somehow plays it our or ends up on the LTIR.

No way in hell they take old man Bobby Lou. No chance.

Malcolm Subban is almost ready to take over. Who retires first Luongo or Fluery?

Taking Luongo over Fleury gives Vegas a shot at Bonino.

Neal Staal Oshie

------- Bonino Boedker

------- Helm Yakupov

------- ------- Strome

Luongo

Subban

There is no way they pick Luongo over Jonathan Marchessault or Reilly Smith.

Never heard of Marches salt but is Smith really that good? Don't follow Florida much at all especially since Shaw was traded to the Ducks

Marchessault, 26, is coming off a 30-goal season and with a cap hit of $750,000 entering the final year of his deal.

How do you figure? For all we know he'd just retire, then the team is on the hook for years. Remember he doesn't want to leave Florida.

I doubt LV takes Lu because there are better, younger long term options, BUT, think about this.  He has a 4.9mil cap hit for the duration of his contract.  For the first few years LV will have to be careful with the cash they spend, and cap aside, Luongo's salary has one more year at 5.9Mil, a year at 2.5mil, a year at 818K and two a 200K.  If he was interested to play it out, he would be a bargain.  I bet we would retire after a season, and that would be bad for our recapture penalty.

if he was injured he wouldn't retire, he wouldn't give up the salary, there'd be no reason to.

Marchessault has the lowest cost per goal in the league, out of players who aren't on an ELC.

30 goals with his contract is basically impossible to pass up.

Would the Canucks have a case if Luo were to retire early?

The team that benefitted from the front loading of the contract to bring the cap hit down takes the penalty. And there's no penalty if he plays out his whole contract. It's if he retires early that hurts the Canucks.
