A vehicle ran into a crowd of pedestrians in north London Sunday night, leaving one person dead and eight people in hospital.

Metropolitan Police say the collision on Seven Sisters Road near Finsbury Park happened at about 12:20 a.m. local time.

The exact details of what happened are not yet clear, but the Muslim Council of Britain said a van hit worshippers as they were leaving a nearby mosque.

Metropolitan Police said in a statement that a 48-year-old man, "was found detained by members of public at the scene and then arrested by police in connection with the incident."

"He has been taken to hospital as a precaution, and will be taken into custody once discharged. He will also be subject of a mental health assessment in due course," police said.

Police said the counter-terrorism team is investigating.

London Ambulance said eight people were taken to hospital, and some patients were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The chairman of the Finsbury Park mosque also tweeted about the collision.

A Reuters witness saw at least one person being loaded into an ambulance.

"We have sent a number of ambulance crews, advance paramedics and specialist responses teams to the scene," a statement from London Ambulance said. "An advance trauma team from London's Air Ambulance has also been dispatched by car."

Witness Boubou Sougou told The Guardian newspaper that a van intentionally drove into the crowd and he saw one victim getting CPR.

"It was not an accident, I saw everything. People were badly injured. The van driver tried to escape but people grabbed him. He did not say anything," Sougou said.

In a statement, Prime Minister Theresa May said "All my thoughts are with those who have been injured, their loved ones, and the emergency services on the scene."

Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, who represents the area, said he is "totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight."

"I've been in touch with the mosques, police and Islington council regarding the incident. My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this awful event."

Is this?... What?... Why?...

Very soon there will be a travel ban to England, especially London. This is disgusting that someone actually thought this was a good idea.

Thoughts and prayers out to those affected

Van hits worshippers outside Finsbury Park Mosque in London

Several pedestrians have been injured after being hit by a van near a mosque in London.

Witnesses said the vehicle veered off the road into worshippers leaving Finsbury Park Mosque shortly after midnight.

Footage showed injured people motionless on the pavement as angry crowds surrounded a white man believed to be the driver.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said officers were called at 12.20am.

"Officers are on the scene with other emergency services," he added. "There are a number of casualties being worked on at the scene. There has been one person arrested. Enquiries continue."

Police did not confirm claims Muslims leaving the mosque after Tarawih prayers performed for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

As unconfirmed reports swirled, former EDL leader Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Lennon, was condemned for accusing the mosque of past links with extremists.

“I genuinely hope the innocent people targeted tonight outside the mosque are ok,” he later wrote on Twitter.

The London Ambulance Service said it had sent a number of resources to the scene but could not immediately be reached to confirm details of casualties.

So you suggest down playing Muslim terrorists? The very people that want to kill all westerners?

Not at all. Just saying people don't seem all that interested in random non terrorist killings.  Saving all their "thoughts and prayers" for victims of terrorists.

It could be anything. These are early reports. It could be a drunk white guy on his way home from the pub. It could be a deliberate targeting. It could be extremists targeting moderate Muslims.

Would be nice if people just chilled out and waited for details.
